I'm sure you're right and that it is a font issue, since there is no problem running the program, just with the displayed transcription. I'm very grateful for the pointer. >If he is abroad and the laptop's 'home language' is not western European >there may be a very limited range of suitable fonts. I believe it's his wife's laptop, so should be set to UK locale. I just tried to identify which font Verify is using on my (XP) machine (font size is in the registry, but not which font is being used) and I think it's the bold variant of Courier New. Wouldn't that be installed as part of the core Windows set with Vista? It is with XP. > >Has he tried the 'restore defaults' option? Thanks again, Jeff, I'll report back for the benefit of the archives if we solve the problem. Best wishes, -- Nowl

    3. This could be because the font BMDVerify uses to match the scans is not installed on the computer, and the 'nearest alternative' the computer has selected is not alphabetic. He could try something like Word and look at the range of fonts installed, type in something like the top surname of the file he is transcribing, and see if he can match the 'symbols' with one of the installed fonts, to verify this. There is also advice in Word Help about obtaining extra fonts. If he is abroad and the laptop's 'home language' is not western European there may be a very limited range of suitable fonts. Has he tried the 'restore defaults' option? This is on the starter screen where you select the scan image, at the foot of the screen. 3. As others have said transcribe the page field as "P/106, see M/30". But you can also add on the next line #THEORY,REF,See M/30 so the system can link up the late entry reference. 3. Thank you all for the most helpful advice. I can see that I must have gone too quickly over the knowledge base help. There is definitely a comma after the P106 so I will just put that in quotation marks along with the See M/30 I will also have to correct Comment to be in caps. I know that and should not have missed it. Again, many thanks to all of you Carol

    3. If the comma really is there, then put that field within quotes ... as per http://freebmd.org.uk/Format.shtml [quote] Commas within fields are permitted so long as that's how they appear in the source. Put the contents of the whole field in quotes. e.g. "St. Geo., Hanover Square" [end quote] or in this case "P/106, see M/30" Mark -- On 1 Nov 2008, at 22:14, Shirley Saunders wrote: > It's probably the comma between the 106 and see that it doesn't > like. 3. I would see the surname as PETHERICK in the second handwritten entry, and Petherick in the first. However the problem preventing acceptance of your file is you putting in an extra comma in the text in the 'page' column. For the 'page' column you need to put either P106 see M/30 or if WinBMD will allow it "P106, see M/30" if you want to keep the comma. Also I suspect you should use capitals for #COMMENT , as in all the examples in Transcribers' Knowledge Base. The only correction was on Line 138 for a missing space between the "See" and the M/30. However, when II try to send that, I now get the message "Expected 6 parts in BIRTHS at line 158 got 7 (Pethcrick,Farrance V.,Lock,Exeter,5b,P/106, see M/30)" My transcription at Line 158 reads Pethcrick,Farrance V.,Lock,Exeter,5b,P/106, see M/30 #Comment This entry was at the end of page with no insertion in text above. I don't think BMD likes the five characters after the District Number, but that's what's on the page. Would someone please check the file and tell me what I need to do to get my upload accepted? 3. If you have an accented letter such as the first 'e' in Renee, in WinBMD, put the cursor where you want the accented e. Press the f4 key and a little table of special characters should appear. select the one you want and double-click the mouse. That should insert it. Remove any unwanted unaccented letter. Details are in the WinBMD help menu. You can drag out the corners of the table of special characters. Occasionally the table becomes very large and difficult to get rid of. In that situation closing WinBMD with Save Batch and Exit and then re-starting it should solve the problem. 3. There was further correspondence about this as a result of your posting. I asked for a list of files with the space. Barrie did a quick check, found there were a lot and realised that most would never get corrected. The outcome was that Barrie changed the system so that now it doesn't matter if the there is a space between the #COMMENT and the (2). I don't keep copies of messages on the FreeBMD newsgroups so without a search through the archive file I can't point you to the actual message but I think it may have been on the syndicates list. 3. Thanks Allan - I think it's also worth stressing that there mustn't be a space between #COMMEMT and (2), as otherwise the #COMMENT is only applied to the line above, and not the second one below (the examples in your Tip of the Day are correct, of course). I learnt this from a posting on this list earlier this year, and it enabled me to go back and correct a mistake I'd made in several of my files.
