    3. I use Windows XP and presently have WinBMD in the Program folder and would prefer it to be just on my C/drive. Can I do this without fouling everything up and can I do it by just moving it. I find it easier to work with files I use the most to have them outside the Program folder. I hadn't thought I might be able to do this if the conversation hadn't come up re Vista. Thanks for any help Carol Haycock #609

    3. Hi All I want to add my tuppenny worth to this. I have not used Vista but I have been involved in using a common program amongst an internet group. The vista users in the group had similar problems to those presently encountered with WinBMD. As I see it it is the Windows Users policies that causes the problem - nothing to do with where you install the program. If there are multiple users on a PC then Windows will put all individual users program settings and documents in that awful "Documents and Settings" folder in a user folder. Multiple users will be the setting if there is just one user and Admin. It is difficult to reset the computer to just an Admin setting once it is set up with users. My experience of many fresh computer installations tells me it is difficult to set up windows consistently so this User action is consistent. I reckon a Dell set-up may act differently from a HP set-up. good luck Bob Phillips ----- Original Message ----- From: "Keith Franklin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2008 6:24 PM Subject: RE: WINBMD Output file >I use Vista and have installed WinBMD under c:/users/keith//winbmd. Hope this helps keith -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Nowl Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2008 10:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: WINBMD Output file I had been wondering whether it might be a good idea to suggest that new transcribers who are Vista users install WinBMD to a location other than C:\Program Files. Would anyone like to comment? Michael, as I understand it, the problem is that Vista's tighter security doesn't allow programs to write to folders or subfolders under \Program Files -- which is where WinBMD's default Output folder will be if the program is installed there. Instead the file path is invisibly remapped to the VirtualStore while the program happily hums along not realising anything has changed :-) Jeff's suggestion of using Define Save Path to set the "output" folder to one of your choice is a good one, and this is what I do under XP. However, I'm guessing (I don't have Vista myself so can't check) that the remapping would affect more than just transcription files. What about WinBMD.ini, where program preferences and file and ID details are stored, and the district, name and supplementary district files? These are all written to and updated all the time and I suspect the most current ones may also be found in the VirtualStore (Vista users please correct me if I'm wrong about this). Mightn't it save a lot of confusion and make backing up these important files easier if WinBMD were installed outside \Program Files in the first place, avoiding the permissions problem? Not having Vista myself yet, there may be some disadvantage I haven't appreciated, but maybe it's a thought? -- Nowl Allan Raymond wrote on Wed, 19 Nov 2008: >Michael > >I quite agree with you, it seems to be a little convoluted to go to user, >virtual store etc. > >It should only be necessary to go to C: and locate the WinBMD folder. 3. Jeff Valid point, I'll put a task on the system to cover two instructions. However I always took the instructions on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/addons/winbmd i.e. WinBMD is a separate program from SpeedBMD and should not be installed in the SpeedBMD folder, but into its own folder on your hard drive to mean set up a folder named WinBMD in the root directory i.e. C;/WinBMD. 3. Yes - that's what I meant. Any program installed in Prog. Files is immediately prey to Vista's rather intrusive interference - including refusing access to you unless you have Admin. rights. The best all-round solution is to disallow any installation to that folder. --- On Thu, 20/11/08, david mayall <[email protected]> wrote: From: david mayall <[email protected]> Subject: Re: WINBMD Output file To: [email protected] Date: Thursday, 20 November, 2008, 8:11 PM 2008/11/19 Michael Kenneth Griffiths <[email protected]> > I'm puzzled by all of this. 3. I had been wondering whether it might be a good idea to suggest that new transcribers who are Vista users install WinBMD to a location other than C:\Program Files. 3. Michael I quite agree with you, it seems to be a little convoluted to go to user, virtual store etc. It should only be necessary to go to C: and locate the WinBMD folder. In my case WinBMD (similar to you) is in the root directory C:WinBMD because that is where I decided to install WinBMD when I downloaded it my PC, others may have decided to install in their Program folder. The output folder being a subfolder to the WinBMD folder. My specific example can be found here: http://www.btinternet.com/~allan_raymond/WinBMD.jpg Allan Raymond ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Kenneth Griffiths" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 8:10 PM Subject: Re: WINBMD Output file I'm puzzled by all of this.
