    3. If you are getting scans that you cannot read, you should take it up with your syndicate co-ordinator. Sometimes co-ordinators may choose to re-allocate more challenging scans to more experienced and patient transcribers, and to support less skilled transcribers through the learning curve of coping with more difficult pages. If there are two sets of scans available for a quarter, the better set should be used. If a rescan exists for a particular page, use that. The linked scan found on FreeBMD search for an entry on your page should be the same one that you are transcribing from, in almost all cases. If the version you are using is of lower quality, that may be due to the way you download it. I recommend collecting scan images using 'save target as' to save the original image. If you first 'open' the image and then 'save as' to save it to your computer, there is a chance, possibly particularly with tif images, that you may accidentally save a degraded version with less detail, if the 'save as' settings on your image-handling software are set to less than 100%. I assume that you will have been advised of the advice in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/process.html "Syndicate co-ordinators should strongly advise transcribers not to look at the first transcription whilst completing their second transcription. " You may realise that in the 'Scan View' window in WinBMD there are a variety of facilities to try to improve the readability of scans, particularly the black-and-white ones. BMDVerify also has facilities to improve readability. If you are doing handwritten scans the advice in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/handwriting.html is valuable If you let me know off-list what the 'shoddy scans' were that gave you problems, I will be happy to comment further off-list. 1. Re: WinBMD Files Double Spaced When Emailed
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. I received a file today that had been pasted into an email. When copied to a text editor it appeared double spaced. I found that when I went to reply to the email that it had been sent in Rich Text (HTML). By changing the format of the 'reply' email to 'Plain Text' and then copying and pasting into the text editor, the double-spacing had disappeared and the file was in a format BMDVerify could cope with. Further experimentation revealed that if you take a double-spaced file and paste it into a blank email in 'Rich Text (HTML)' format, then change the format to 'Plain Text' you can get rid of the double-spacing. This is in Windows Mail, the Vista (downgrade) version of Outlook Express. May be worth trying if you get any more double-spaced files. Chris Hughes -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Allan Raymond Sent: 24 November 2008 21:38 To: [email protected] Subject: Tip of the Day (No. 7) - Transcribing Correct Volume No for SmethwickDistrict for 1932 September Quarter and later This is the seventh in a series of "Tip of the Day" to help volunteers who are transcribing for the FreeBMD Project. Suggestions for other "Tip of the Day" are welcome. Also any suggested improvement to the wording of this "Tip of the Day" is also encouraged. This tip in particular applies to transcribers working on 1932 September and later Index Pages. Smethwick Registration District was created 1.10.1932 with corresponding Vol Nos : 6b (1932-46), 9B (1946-74). WinBMD is incorrectly showing the Vol No as 6n rather than 6b A number of volunteers are selecting the Vol No from WinBMD standard District Picklist rather than typing/transcribing what they see (TWYS). This is causing quite a number of Correction Requests to be issued to the transcribers concerned, causing additional work for the corrections team and the transcribers. A longer term solution is being sought to the problem but for the present the following action is recommended. 1. Open up WinBMD as per normal 2. Select "Edit" 3. Then select "Edit Districts" 4. This will bring up the "WinBMD District Editor" 5. Select "Add New District" and insert "Smethwick,6b" in the box and select the "Add this District" Once you have done this the next time you encounter Smethwick in the Index you will be given the choice of either: Smethwick,6b or Smethwick,6n in the drop down menu of the District Picklist. Select the one that corresponds to the Index, which in the majority of instances should be Smethwick,6b and just happens to be the first in the drop down menu list. 3. Typically I have seen this happen when you screen scrape a file from something like http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/show-file.pl. Some mail systems do play around with line end conventions (which are different on Mac, Unix and Windows) so it is possible that AOL have changed something, although one would have thought it would have affected everyone. Alternatively, has your co-ordinator just moved to a Mac? If you and your coordinator have WinZIP available you could zip the file before sending it and that should stop it happening. 3. Dave, you say that the output files on your PC are okay so I assume that WinBMD is creating them correctly and that you believe the email system is creating the double line spacing. Have you tried emailing an output file to someone else? This may help isolate the problem to yourself or your co-ordinators' end of the email chain. You are welcome to send one or two output files directly to myself if you wish. Come to think of it, my co-ordinator has a blueyonder email address and he hasn't mentioned any problems. John. 2. Perhaps what I've just found out will help others out there with Vista. I couldn't find my files although my file path in WinBMD showed them to be in C:\Program Files\WinBMD\Output which as Barrie says is where they should be. When I looked in Output they weren't shown but when I use BMDVerify that's where I see they are. I've now noticed when I open the WinBMD folder I get an extra item on the Toolbar 'Compatibility Files' which when I click on it changes my list of Folders so I see the Virtual Store and in my Output Folder I can now see all the files that I couldn't see before. Hope this helps. Cath

    3. In WinBMD go to File/Define Save Path and specify where you would like to save your files. Move your existing files to the same place (but note that the Most Recently Used list in the Files menu will not then find the files; you will have to open then from Files/Open File). In this way WinBMD is in Program Files (which is where it should be) and your data is in your data area (which is where it should be).
