    1. Why is this getting a warning?
    2. Christopher Richards
    3. Why am I getting this warning? Volume is expected to be numbers (Roman or Arabic) optionally followed by A to H, got '6_' at line 59 (BROOKS,Albert,Newcastle L,6_,60) This is in 1861B4B0132 I would have thought this was correct if the letter is not readable Christopher Richards

    3. Are we in danger of spending too much time on what is not going to be an issue (other than what is technically "right")? If the volume is transcribed as _d, when it is loaded the FreeBMD mechanism will link it to the correct district and researchers will be able to find it. Although I try very hard, I am sure there are bigger errors in my transcriptions than this. Back to transcribing perhaps!! 3. Thank you Bill. Both '_{0,1}d' and '_d' have been suggested by FreeBMD 'officials'. However, neither seems totally correct (to me at least). I have settled on '_d' followed by a #COMMENT and will leave it that way unless my syndicate coordinator asks me to change it. John. 3. If a field is missing I believe one should enter ? So I would enter the district as ?,d. An underscore indicates an unreadable character and * indicates an unknown number of unreadable characters. Since the entry is non existent I believe ? is the correct entry for the expected but missing volume number. Am interested to hear if others disagree, for my own knowledge. 3. Hello Allan, I made a mistake! The problem is that the number is missing not unreadable. There is no option that is totally correct to deal with the situation. _d is incorrect because there is no number ? is incorrect because there is a letter d. The system will not allow the file to be uploaded with just the letter d. The file has been uploaded with _d because there is some evidence that the number was there but got taken out. 3. The FreeBMD overriding principle of Type What You See means that you should only accept the volume number that comes up from the picklist when you type in the district name if it agrees with what is showing on the scan image of the index page.If it does not agree, amend your transcription to show what is actually on the page. King's Norton district was actually in volume 6c up to December quarter 1912, then in 6d from March quarter 1913. Please look carefully, as John did, when entering districts and volumes. You will know that Allan Raymond has recently pointed out problems with Smethwick district from December quarter 1932, as it was really in volume 6b, but WinBMD has been offering 6n in the picklist. 3. I think that the way you have done it, _d, is the best way to do it. I would suggest that in this circumstance it is not necessary to remove the _ in File management. ?d is clearly wrong as ? is only used when a complete field is missing, and there is a d in this one. *d would be misleading as it implies more than one unreadable character, which seems unlikely. The partial obscuring of the top of the 6 in the line below implies that there was something - presumably the 1920 equivalent of tippex - used to obscure a mistake in typing, but the correction was never completed. Therefore we can assume that there is a mystery number there, obscured by a white material - and _ to represent that mystery number is fair enough. If you take the image, look at it as negative, add reduce the gamma correction you can just see what then becomes a darker patch where the correction material was applied. I am sending separately a cropped image to John to show what I mean. If anyone else wants a copy, let me know. You can even see fragments of the original number or letter under the correction fluid. 3. Hello Brian, According to the Uncertain Character Format, "?" is used when there is nothing in the column. In this case, the column contains "d". Additionally, neither WinBMD or the FreeBMD file management editor accept "?d". Kind regards, John. 3. An update: With the help of John Crew (many thanks) - it seems that it is an AOL problem. AOL seemed to have changed something with the encoding of text files. It seems to have nothing to do with the email format; HTML or plain text - it is the text file attachment that is being double spaced. It has nothing to do with WinBMD. As suggested, zipping the files worked. Any other AOL users having problems emailing text file attachments? With Outlook Express? Goodmorning all, query: ..if we are doublekeying files here to help prevent errors, why are some of us getting unreadable scans ? to 'type what we see' would mean uploading something that looks like a secret code in some instances. I've just had 2 such scans & when I looked on FreeBMD, there were all the items in good order & readable. I clicked on the "original scan" & behold I could read it! Where is the sense in uploading what I had done, only half of which was of use to someone searching for Family? Is it possible for all Transcribers to get readable scans? Wendy M.

    3. Hello Jeff, If I am reading your email correctly, the file you referred to was sent as part of the email not as an attachment. The original problem related to attachments. Regards Brian Smart -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jeff Coleman Sent: 25 November 2008 22:24 To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: WinBMD Files Double Spaced When Emailed I received a file today that had been pasted into an email. When copied to a text editor it appeared double spaced. I found that when I went to reply to the email that it had been sent in Rich Text (HTML). By changing the format of the 'reply' email to 'Plain Text' and then copying and pasting into the text editor, the double-spacing had disappeared and the file was in a format BMDVerify could cope with. Further experimentation revealed that if you take a double-spaced file and paste it into a blank email in 'Rich Text (HTML)' format, then change the format to 'Plain Text' you can get rid of the double-spacing. This is in Windows Mail, the Vista (downgrade) version of Outlook Express. May be worth trying if you get any more double-spaced files.
