    3. Surely the entry should be transcribed exactly as has been handwritten - the volume letters are only ever a, b, c, d or e - * would indicate the number of letters could not be determined. Therefore if the character after Orsett,5 was quite illegible, then an underscore ("_") is the correct way to go. 3. Hello David, Thanks for all the work you've put in on BMDVerify - I think it's a wonderful program !! I'm writing because I've just got one tiny suggestion that you may like to incorporate in a new version. My suggestion is that on the the first screen you see when you start BMDVerify you reverse the order of the top two questions - i.e. I'm suggesting that the user is first asked to "Step 1 - specify your transcription file", and is then asked "Step 2 - specify the scanned image file". The reasoning behind this is that we transcribers are given a batch of files to transcribe - in my case currently five. I download my five images into my WinBMD working folder (I've previously moved the last set of images and transcription files into a "Done" folder). Then I transcribe the first image and when I've finished transcribing it I run BMDVerify. I'm first asked to specify the image file and presented with a directory with five images in. It's easy enough to remember which one I want when it's the first one - but further into the batch I often forget where I've got to and select the wrong image file. If I could select the transcription file first then I would always get the right one - it will always be the highest numbered one. I hope that makes sense and is helpful - please don't hesitate to ask if I haven't explained clearly. I'm sure there are lots of hidden consequences to this suggestion that I haven't thought of - life always seems to be like that ! Cheers, Mike 2008/12/21 David Lang <[email protected]> > Bob > It's a known problem and I have a new version ready that will fix it but > there's been a hitch getting it released. 1. Bad scans
    2. I have just received 20 scans (1933M2-B-0036 - 0055) of which at least 25% of the entries are totally unreadable. If I transcribe these there are going to be so many missing entries that it will be of no use to anybody. Are there better scans available or would it be possible to get these re-scanned? I've tried tinkering with the contrast, colour depth, negative and everything else but of no avail. I've been transcribing for 3 years now and these are by far the worse I've ever had. Help please!! 3. Regarding all the debate about WinBMD etc and Vista, I have a 'desk top' PC running Windows Xp Corporate edition with SP2 and a laptop running Vista Ultimate Edition with SP1 and I use both at various times for transcribing. I have found no problems whatsoever with the Xp machine or the 'Vista' machine running any of the FreeBMD programs. Whether or not is is because I am using the 'larger' (corporate and Ultimate) versions of Xp and Vista as opposed to the usual inexpensive pre-installed 'home' editions, I don't know. Perhaps someone on the technical staff could investigate this possibility. Regards to all, Brian
