    1. Re: How do I transcribe this?
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. I agree with Sue that there is no evidence of a capital L in that line. It is important that you check your transcription against the original, line by line (or column by column if you prefer) using BMDVerify (or other methods if you are not using Windows) before sending to FreeBMD. I echo the praise for David Lang for the new version of BMDVerify and I strongly recommend it to anyone doing pages from 1930 or later. It also works well for handwritten pages, and the L and R buttons allowing you to tilt the image to left or right in small increments are especially helpful if you have a scan in which the lines are not horizontal. 3. A huge thank you Mr Lang. I've just verified a file containing 1931 marriages, and it works a treat. Much appreciated. Carrie :) ________________________________ From: David Lang <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, 8 January, 2009 9:40:43 Subject: BMDVerify Version 3.0.4 There is now a new version of BMDVerify available that sorts out the various issues that were raised about transcribing 1930's indexes. It can be downloaded from the usual web address http://bmdverify.itendia.co.uk/bmdv3/bmdv3.html The major new feature is some extra buttons at the bottom of the screen, labelled "Adjust Columns", that can be used to adjust the position of the columns showing age at death, mother's maiden name or wife's maiden name (as appropriate for the transcription being verified) and also the district. 3. Hi Carole. I've just had a look at the scan of the entry you've described, but I can't see the capital L in the page column - only the number 376. Mistype, perhaps? 3. Firstly, thank you and all the Transcribers for an absolutely invaluable resource! One very minor suggestion; could the message on the Home Page "The FreeBMD Database was last updated on Fri 2 Jan 2009 and currently contains 160,472,137 distinct records (207,026,567 total records)." ... be extended to show the number of NEW records added at each update ... for example: "The FreeBMD Database was last updated on Fri 2 Jan 2009 with nnn, nnn, nnn new records, and currently contains 160,472,137 distinct records (207,026,567 total records)." Thanks John James

    3. +BREAK must be entered on a line on its own. 6(ak) is misleading in having "(for information..." following the +BREAK and this will be corrected. Do you mean it was explicitly disallowed, or allowed (but not explicitly)? I shall send it again, minus the tiny illustration which I copied and pasted from the full page scan, and without which the query is just about meaningless. The normal rule of TWYS (namely that you don't try to resolve an entry based on other records such as another event for the same person, or on a census record for that person, applies equally to cross referencing the spouse. If you wish to add a #COMMENT, that would be acceptable, but not essential. -- Dave Mayall
