    3. I have just begun transcribing and am working on typed scans of 1932 births. On several pages I note there are handwritten additions where under the page number the note says "see Dec' 34" (or some other year.) WinBMD will not allow me to type the apostrophe after the D. How to handle this, please? Thanks for your help. Yvonne

    2. Thanks, all, for the help on this point. I subscribe to the list in digest form and for some reason have not received Issue 22 which must include my original posting and Dave's reply - but I have the full story thanks to the copies in Sue's Email. Doubtless Issue 22 will turn up in its own good time. Cedric Hoptroff ________________________________________________________________________ AOL Email goes Mobile! (Bear in mind that the original > typist's mistake may be no more than failure to select the correct case > as some typewriters did not have zero and one; you use capital letter > 'O' and lower case letter 'l' instead.) You are correct to assume that the most likely error here is that the typist failed to select upper case when typing on a machine that used upper case O as a zero. Given that TWYS places less emphasis on upper/lower case, it is permissible to depart from the exact case of the original, and read it as an upper case O, and transcribe it as 0 -- Dave Mayall

    1. Age at death is a letter 'o'
    2. I am transcribing 1933D1-B0048, which was typed on a typewriter. In the entry for Barclay, Mavis the age at death is shown as a lower case letter 'o', presumably when numeral '0' was intended. FreeBMD will not accept a non-numerical value. The choice seems to be as follows: 1. Follow TKB 6(ac) and insert an asterisk and follow the entry with - #COMMENT Age shown as lower case letter 'o' 2. Depart from TWYS and use a zero. (Bear in mind that the original typist's mistake may be no more than failure to select the correct case as some typewriters did not have zero and one; you use capital letter 'O' and lower case letter 'l' instead.) Which is correct? My inclination is towards 2 but if 1 is followed, can the search engine cope? Age at death is a searchable field. 1. RE: Commas in Forename field
    2. Archer Barrie
    3. There are 9936 records in the database with commas in the given name field. No doubt a check could be added to WinBMD and from an ergonomic point of view this is the best place to do it. However, not all users use WinBMD and many use an old version so if this warning was going to be raised it should also be raised by the upload. Our approach to retrospective checks is to flag such problems in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/SuspectFiles.html not to make automated changes to user files. 3. Hello I have the following from one of my transcribers. Could this be added to the Wish list for the next version? Thanks Sue "I've just reviewed all my input to date in order to find and correct instances where two initials were separated by a space (recent correspondence having alerted me to the issue). In the course of doing that, I found a number of cases where I'd typed a comma instead of a full stop after an initial - they stood out in the uploaded files I was editing because the complete first name field was enclosed in quotes, that being the standard for fields containing a comma in text files written by EXCEL. Naturally, I fixed both the uploaded files and my own copies. It left me wondering whether WinBMD might be made to check for and raise a warning about any comma it finds in a name field. If this is practical, it might save countless minor errors (I assume they don't have any wider implications?) being propagated in future. If there is an issue for the integrity or accessibility of the data, I'm sure it would be possible to sweep the existing data files and edit them to replace commas with full stops in that field (which, in any case, should bring us back to TWYS standards, because I suspect there'd be very few instances where the scans contained a comma in the name field).." Thanks Coordinator of The Recordsmiths Syndicate of volunteer transcribers working for FreeBMD. See http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ for details of the project.

    3. Whilst the definition (in http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Format.shtml) specifies no space between COMMENT or THEORY and the open bracket, it is allowed. It is not just that the entry is not marked as having a comment, there is no comment associated with the entry! This will be corrected at the next update. 3. I'm puzzled about why the flag (the questionmark) for #COMMENT no longer seems to show against my entries in FreeBMD searches. I have been entering it as #COMMENT(2) Spouse name is given as...., but when I search on the entries I have done for 2Q 1933 marriages, particularly Dakin, Thomas E. to Davies, Richard J, and Jones, Frances I.E. to Jones, William, there is no comment flag, and there should be many. Assuming that I had entered it wrongly, I have been through all my 2Q 1933 marriage files and changed it to #COMMENT (2) Spouse name etc, (ie I put in a space) However, when I checked my 4Q 1924 marriage file 1924MN40140.BMD, I find that #Comment(2) was entered, and the flag appears in the search for Nason, Irene J.
