Hi. Got the same problem with special characters as already reported. Used to be OK, so something must have gone adrift. Also it doesn't seem to contain o-e diphthong as is reqired for true transcription of Phoebe in a lot of cases.
If I access the special character table part of it is out of sight below the screen and there does not seem to be any way of moving it, also if I put it down on the task bar and then bring it back up it gets very large and its only possible to see part of one letter, if this is repeated it gets even larger. The only way out seems to be to restart the program. Can someone tell me how to rectify this please. Juda 3431 >From David and June in Gosport

Thank you Carrie, I tried that and it wouldn't accept it. I usually get the response, "do you wish to add etc." but not with Liverpool. Jean You must add 'Liverpool, 8b' to your District list. You do this by typing the district name and volume as it appears; this should then result in you being prompted: 'Liverpool, 8b is a new District. Would you like to add it to your District File?'; click 'Yes' and in future the pick-list will contain 'Liverpool, 8b' Best wishes Graham Jean Davies wrote: > I am transcribing 1932-B-3 K-Z 0356-0360 > I find that I cannot enter 'Liverpool' alone, the pick-list will only accept > 'Liverpool South'. > I have used that and gone to my records to delete 'South' (10 times) so far. > Can you suggest an easier way for the pick-list to accept 'Liverpool'. ? > > Jean Davies > FreeBMD-Admins mailing list - archive http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/freebmd-admins > FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
You're more than welcome Jean, It is strange that it hasn't added itself, but there is another way to do it. If you go into the programme files for WinBMD and open the file named WinBMD_Supp_Districts.txt in notepad you can manually add it there. I wouldn't recommend this as a frequent action, as you must ensure you place the entry in the correct spot alphabetically, and check, double check, and check again thay you've used the exact same syntax as the rest of the entries listed. However, if you add it correctly and then save the file it should appear in the picklist after you close and reopen WinBMD again. It is an emergency solution Jean, and I'm not wholly comfortable with suggesting it, but I'm sure it'll become plain to you what you must do once the file is open. Good luck with it. Carrie :) ________________________________ From: Jean Davies <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, 14 April, 2009 15:35:20 Subject: Re: Liverpool Thank you Carrie, I tried that and it wouldn't accept it. I am transcribing 1932-B-3 K-Z 0356-0360 I find that I cannot enter 'Liverpool' alone, the pick-list will only accept 'Liverpool South'. I have used that and gone to my records to delete 'South' (10 times) so far. Can you suggest an easier way for the pick-list to accept 'Liverpool'. ? Jean Davies
Afternoon Jean, If you type in "Liverpool,10d" and then tab, you should get the option to either add, cancel or ignore the new district type. Once yes is selected it will automatically come up at the top of the list for Liverpool variants the next time you need it, having added it to the list of possibilities. Obviously both would come up, so if you need Liverpool South in the future, it's a simple matter of selecting the appropriate value. For the first time we seem to have found a 'flaw' in WinBMD - it doesn't accept District Names that have a numeral in the first (name) part! Working through 1938 March Births, we find a couple of "new" Districts: Northumberland North First,10b Northumberland North Second,10b Unfortunately for the inputter, the Index abbreviates these to Nthmbld.N.1st.,10b Nthmbld.N.2nd.,10b One can get round the first obstacle by replacing the numeral '1' with lower-case ' l ' which looks just about identical (though isn't). However, inputting 2nd as it stands produces a warning "Invalid character in District name - 2" So we are stymied and cannot TWWS. What's the solution? Transcribing it as "Second" and following it with a #COMMENT every time? Rather a bore, surely? Richard Oliver Madrid, Spain [email protected]
This is a known issue, and we are working on a solution that causes as little pain and/or boredom as possible. 2009/4/14 Richard Oliver <[email protected]> > For the first time we seem to have found a 'flaw' in WinBMD - it doesn't > accept District Names that have a numeral in the first (name) part! > > Working through 1938 March Births, we find a couple of "new" Districts: > > Northumberland North First,10b > Northumberland North Second,10b > > Unfortunately for the inputter, the Index abbreviates these to > > Nthmbld.N.1st.,10b > Nthmbld.N.2nd.,10b > > One can get round the first obstacle by replacing the numeral '1' with > lower-case ' l ' which looks just about identical (though isn't). Fiona You possible may not be aware the query from Ted was posted to the FreeBMD Admin list rather than to you individually. Anyone who is subscribed to the list (many hundreds) will have received a copy of Ted's query plus your response. A complete page from the scan which contains your entry has not been transcribed. I'll make arrangements with the Co-ordinator to have it completed as soon as possible, hopefully before the next database update. I am transcribing 1931 Births where unnamed children are entered as (Male) or (Female) whereas previously they were entered as Male or Female. When prompted I added (Male) and (Female) to my Forename Picklist and they now appear on my picklist with the brackets included. So far, so good. Each time now that I encounter (Male) or (Female), the picklist asks me afresh if I want to add the name to the picklist even though it is already there and I have just used autocompletion. Am I correct in thinking that this malfunction is because of the brackets in the "name"? Is it possible to do a minor tweak to WinBMD in the next update to correct this? Michael
Hi Bob I think you opened your image file when you thought you were opening a transcription file. the image files have names with hyphens in and .jpg on the end, like your 1928D4-A-0002.jpg. Transcription files do not have hyphens and should have .bmd on the end - yours should probably be 1928D4A0002.BMD - though a few syndicates prefer the old SpeedBMD format which have .sca on the end. I wrote this bit below for one of my new transcribers a week or two ago . Hope it helps. You can find where your transcription file is saved by looking in the WinBMD File menu for the 'Define Save Path' route. [ If working on Vista, depending how you installed WinBMD, you may have to hunt for your transcription file, but might find it at C:\Users\bob\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\WinBMD\Output] BMDVerify is a great help in checking your files. I normally check the day after doing a transcription, to see it with fresh eyes. If you have not got the hang of using BMDVerify these are the key steps, in order: 1 Open BMDVerify (after first opening your file in WinBMD in another window) 2 Select the scan image by navigating to it 3 Select the transcription file by navigating to it 4. indicate how many columns - unless it guesses 1930s must be two columns 5. use f11 and f12 key to get one column across most of screen 6. drag the coloured box around, drag it out to right length to match the image ( and use F key and Shift-F to get the font size right in it). Maybe also use L or R button if the image is slanted. 7. Calibrate by lining it up on the first and 10th entry, and the top entry of the second column, using the enter key to tell it when each is lined up. If you have the wrong entry below the top line on the right, use + and - keys to move to find the right one. 8. Check each in in turn. If you find anything wrong, correct it in WinBMD and press f3 in WinBMD, then press R when in BMDVerify for it to refresh the transcription file. Again I have a few Screen shots to show various steps in the process, which may help you visualise how to use it. The new version of BMDVerify has L and R buttons at the bottom. These will rotate the scan image a little to the left or to the right, if it is slanted, so that the lines are more nearly parallel to the lines of transcription in the coloured box. It also has two pairs of buttons marked Mdn Nm < > and Dist < > . These can be used to move the Mother's Maiden Name column, and separately the District column to the left or (usually) the right in the coloured box, so that you can get them just under the corresponding part of the scan image. If you can't sort it, get back to me off-list. If anyone wants screen shots of BMDVerify in use, ask me.
