    1. Re: WinBMD - District problem due to numbers in field
    2. Hi Brian, If it will help until the new WinBMD is up and running, I have found the easiest way to deal with the problem is to type First instead of the 1st and then when the file is uploaded to FreeBMD amend the First to 1st. on the File Management system. Doesn't take too long. Roy

    3. Hi It isn't happening to me but I have had it happen before & it was some message on my ISP's server that was causing a bit of a blockage. I had to log on to my mail on the internet (the ISP server) and determine the bad guy and delete it at the source so to speak. That has cleared it up everytime. Occasionally, it has cleared on it's own and I only end up with two or three duplicates. Good luck! 3. Having spent months and a lot of money searching with no luck for my great grandmother's birth record, I came across your website.  I decided to search on first names only, just in case her name was different, something which the other websites would not allow.  I am pleased to say I found details of her birth within seconds! It appears that the records are under Birge rather that Burge.  Without your website I would probably have never found out.  Thank you for this free facility.   I am interested in becoming a transcriber, though I do work full time so could only do a small amount. I live in Cardiff, Wales, UK.  I would like to help other people similar to myself to find their records too.   Thank you Tracey

    1. Re: Error Number 10013
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. The simple answer is to send the file manually via File Management on the transcribers' page. If the problem recurs the cause may merit investigation. You can find advice in rather technical language by pasting the error message into a search engine. Don't assume all such advice is wonderfully helpful. I suspect that this error might perhaps occur if she has File Management open in her web browser and then tries to send the file using WinBMD, though I might be completely wrong. It may depend on what operating system she has and what other things her computer is doing or trying to do at the same time. This is the way I advise my transcribers to upload manually, if for any reason WinBMD automated upload fails: You get access from http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/bmd-files.pl using your submitter id and password (both case sensitive). Select 'Upload New File. You will see two boxes labelled 'File Name' and 'Upload' Use the 'Browse' button next to 'Upload' to navigate to the file you want to upload, in the file system on your computer, in C:/Program Files/WinBMD/Output, or wherever you have saved it to. Your file will look something like C:\Program Files\WinBMD\Output\1854B1\1854B1Y0930.BMD in that box. Copy the part of the filename in front of .BMD by selecting(highlighting) it and then CTRL-C (holding down CTRL key and pressing C at the same time) - or by right-clicking and 'copy' In the case of my file this is 1854B1Y0930. Paste this into the box labelled 'File Name' ( CTRL-V or right-mouse-click and 'paste') and Click on 'Send'. You get a nice big green tick and a message confirming the file has been uploaded. This method can be used whenever WinBMD uploads are not working well, or if your own computer settings prevent automatic upload from WinBMD. Hope this helps Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisa Dominey" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 19, 2009 9:47 AM Subject: Error Number 10013 > Dear All, > > > > I have a new transcriber who cannot upload her file to FreeBMD. 1. Run-time Error 429
    2. Laurence Clark
    3. I feel it appropriate to report that 'Run-time Error 429' (to do with Active-X routines) has reared its ugly head again. However, due to various backups I keep (including the whole system), I was able to recover all my data, except the most recent half page or so of BMD transcriptions. This time though, I am fairly certain what caused it. My PC runs under VISTA, and I wanted to look at the 'Help' facility. However, although '.hlp' files are not supported under the VISTA OS, Microsoft provide a routine to enable the 'Help' facility to be used. In the process of down-loading this routine, it was indicated that an Active-X routine needed to be down-loaded as well. Bearing in mind the previous troubles I had experienced, I was reluctant to allow this, but decided to go ahead. It was after this that WinBMD showed the familiar message about 'Error 429'. It is quite possible that it was this that caused my original problems, but I don't remember the effect being so immediate - perhaps I didn't invoke WinBMD immediately afterwards. If this possibility has already been aired, I apologise, but I felt it might be of help to others. I should point out that, before this recent episode, I was able to restart transcribing after the first instance of 'Error 429' only when I re-installed VISTA and all my applications. Many thanks, Laurence Clark

    3. Do you remember asking a similar question in February 2008? It is in then list archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/freebmd-admins/2008-02/1202479085 together with the replies then received, which seemed to solve the problem for you at the time. The simple answer is that after pressing f4 key you should NOT click on the 'hollow-square' 'maximise icon, but change the shape and size of the window showing special characters by dragging the corners of the window. If you do get a giant window of special characters that you can't cope with, save your WinBMD file if you can, close WinBMD and then start it again, being more careful in future. If you can get at the WinBMD File menu, do this by 'Save Batch and Exit' from the File menu. For those more technically minded, Ian Brooke posted a 'fix' for this at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/freebmd-admins/2008-02/1202570723 Note that editing WinBMD.ini should only be done while WinBMD is closed. [If you can't find WinBMD.ini in the WinBMD folder it may simply be called WinBMD and have an icon with a cog-wheel over it and 'Configuration Settings'. You can confirm it is the right file by right-clicking and choosing 'Properties' or, in some versions of Windows, by changing the View of the folder contents.] This is advice I have given to my syndicate in the past, which may be appropriate for the general WinBMD user: =Special Characters= Many of you will have come across the use of f4 key to open a table of special characters, letters with various sorts of accents, after locating the cursor where you want the special letter. To see the whole range of such characters, 'drag down' the bottom right corner until what you want is present, select the one you want, and double-click. Occasionally, for example if you try to minimise the table of special characters and re-open it, the table grows enormous and takes up much of the screen. To solve this problem use 'Save batch and exit' in the WinBMD 'File' menu. When you re-start WinBMD the character table will have gone, and you can try again. Also it doesn't seem to > contain o-e diphthong as is reqired for true transcription of Phoebe in a > lot of cases. > As detailed at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/beginhelp.shtml Dipthongs (the most common being the oe of Phoebe) are typographical conventions, and should be expanded in full. Whilst we can work around most dipthongs that people might enter, the oe dipthong is a particularly problematic case, as it is impossible to correctly map it from the various character sets. Where transcribers go to huge lengths to get the oe dipthong into a file, it is a certainty that it will be mangled during upload, and will not achieve what was desired. -- Dave Mayall
