    3. Many thanks to all the people who responded regarding the Note on FreeBMD. It took me quite a while, but with Allan's help I finally found where to check what had been entered. It would appear that either my eMail address was never ticked to be shown or someone beat me to it as it was marked "not to be shown". As I didn't find it until today I can assure you I haven't changed it in the past week. I also changed some of the other parameters as someone had ticked that I had a fiche reader, which I don't. Is there a work-around for >this situation? Hi Mark The question mark UCF is only used when all the data in a field is missing, and here you have the "30", so that wouldn't be right. I'd suggest entering the volume as 30_ for now to keep WinBMD happy :-). Then after you have uploaded the page, you can go into your File Management and take the underscore out again. Hope this helps :-) -- Nowl

    3. People, Apart from the excellent advice already given by others, you should also be aware that the privacy facility in your FreeBMD profile can be overriden on a file by file basis. if when completing the header page in WinBMD you fill in the "Credit To" box with your email address, then this settings will override your profile and the email address you entered in the credit to box could be made public. When completing full pages for your syndicate, it is best to ensure that the three Credit fields (Credit Name, Email and Credit) are all left blank. This advice is contained in the WinBMD help file which can be accessed by pressing the F1 key when the cursor is located in anyone of the three credit fields. Best wishes Kevin S. 3. Dear Nancy I expect you know that this sort of message only occurs if you have chosen the option to invite correspondence on the entries you have submitted . This may have been the default choice at one time, but has not been for a number of years. Go to 'File Management' on the FreeBMD transcribers' page, logging in with your submitter ID and password (both case sensitive) and scroll down to 'Modify your submitter details' at lower left. There you will see three choices under 'Privacy': Do not reveal my name (Submitter ID will still be shown) Reveal my name but not my email address Show my email address and invite correspondence on the entries I have submitted You only get this sort of message if you have chosen the last option. If you move your choice to one of the others the messages from database users will stop. Click on 'Update' after making the change and confirm it if need be. Simple as that. 3. Hi Nancy, I changed mine through the FreeBMD website so I don't get contacted at all - I have no further information. Log into the FreeBMD website to the File Management page. Click on 'Modify your submitter details' at the bottom of the screen and then you can click on the radio buttons to either not reveal name etc, reveal name but not email address, or invite correspondence. From the emails you're getting, your name is probably set up to invite correspondence. The webpage I'm on for that is http://www2.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/bmd- user-admin.pl Good luck! Not there. ( I viewed them on a paysite) Is this because that page was not available to FreeBMD transcribers, or did it just get left behind. I'm repeating 1841 Births transcriptions & found some of them were not already online. Is it the same reason? cheers Wendy

    3. It is possible to report a missing page by using the existing Corrections procedure by referring to the last entry on the preceding page and following the instructions on the correction request page. Occasionally pages which are thought to be missing have actually been transcribed, but a mistranscription or the use of uncertain character format in the surname has made it difficult to find the entries. If you think you have discovered that a complete page is missing in a quarter that is marked as >99% complete, you may wish to research which scan is involved ( by looking at entries nearby in the alphabet that have been transcribed and using the 'spectacles' icon to see the scan reference) and to communicate that information to the co-ordinator of the syndicate concerned. You can find which syndicate is doing which quarters by looking at the link '.Allocations Pages' under 'Volunteer Support & Resources' on the FreeBMD transcribers' page. This route should not be used to report simple transcription errors, for which the normal correction request procedure should be followed. If you would like to send me off-list the details of what you think is missing I will be happy to check, and follow up if necessary. 3. Hello I have a transcriber who is running Vista and having lots of trouble getting started. She managed to get under way and did one page, but when she launched BMD Verify it came up with the "run-time error 429 ACTIVEX COMPONENT CANT CREATE OBJECT." This same message now comes up when she tries to open WinBMD. She has tried reloading the program, to no avail and has also tried to follow the instructions in 3b in the helps files. Can anyone help please? Thanks Sue Coordinator of The Recordsmiths Syndicate of volunteer transcribers working for FreeBMD. See http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ for details of the project.

    3. Apologies. More haste less speed. C:\Users\Username\Documents\FreeBMD is where I suggest that she put the 'Define Save Path', where Username is her user name on that computer. There are advantages if files are no saved within the C:\Program Files area of a Vista computer. Most importantly they are easy to find, for example to attach to an email to a co-ordinator, or to use in BMDVerify. 3. Hello Sue I suggest that, after closing down her computer and leaving it a while and then starting it again 1) She creates a folder in 'Documents' called 'FreeBMD' 2) She opens WinBMD and in the 'File' menu sets 'Define Save Path' to C:\Documents\FreeBMD 3) She presses f3 key to save her transcription to the new location 4) She now runs BMDVerify and locates her transcription file from this location It may do the magic. She should also make sure her windows updates are up to date.
