Another option (which works with any list of identical surnames, and is a great time-saver) is to type the first entry, then before pressing RETURN press the F2 key. This will automatically copy the surname into the first field on the following line, and take you straight to the forename field. When you reach the last one in the list, press F2 again to switch this feature off. HTH. Richard, Another option not mentioned by anyone is to only complete the first surname entry and fill in the blank surnames when you have finished e.g. McCLEAN by selecting Edit, Fill down (using WinBMD). Having said that why not just hit the Return key on the next line and it copies the entry above. Gillian, You have been subscribed to the Admins newsletter which is a forum for FreeBMD transcribers to air issues with transcribing (like how to transcribe "Mc"). Details of how to subscribe and unsubscribe are here http://www.freebmd.org.uk/lists.html. It may be that your syndicate coordinator added you to Admins list. You do not say where you sent your email about the newsletter but if it was to the Admins list you need to be on the list otherwise you will not see any replies or comments. Hi If you hold the shift key down whilst typing the 'c' then it will appear in lower case. I'm with Mildred - Shift + C = lower case. This does mean that I do not have the 'Auto Surnames in All-Caps' selected in the Options menus. I have Caps Lock selected on the Key Board. Means I have to use the shift key for all but the initials in the Forenames. The District field is typed in capitals until the picklist shows the required entry at the top of the list and the Tab key is used and the full name from the picklist is inserted in the box. This is what I have found to be the most efficient, for me. What I do in this case is to select the "C" using the mouse and then press ctl-L. This converts the "C" to lower-case, leaving the rest in capitals. Gordon, Losing my picklist happened to me once and it caused a lot of lost time for me and others. The problem was embarrassing and simple in its cause. I had inadvertantly put an incorrect date on my header. I think I may have keyed a pre 1837 date. As a result only my added districts were coming up. Could you have done the same? regards Shelley > From: freebmd-admins-request@rootsweb.com > Subject: FREEBMD-ADMINS Digest, Vol 6, Issue 65 > To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 13 May 2011 01:00:46 -0600 > > > > Mail for the mailing list should be send to > FreeBMD-Admins@rootsweb.com > > The website for the mailing list is > http://FreeBMD.rootsweb.com/ > It contains all the information about the project and is current status. > Archives http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/freebmd-admins > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Type MC then CTRL+P which changes the C to c then carry on in upper case. I am a very new transcriber with Vista. I had the same problem. My brother, a bit of an anorak, suggested that I should try saving the WinBMD software into a folder within My Documents rather than as Programme Software. I did this and it worked like a dream. Try it and see if it works for you as well. I would appreciate hearing how you got on. Good luck. We are transcribing 1953 Deaths, a series of scans in which the surname appears in CAPITALS. Unfortunately the useful Option "Surnames in All-Caps" doesn't work for the names like McCLEAN, McDONALD etc. as the lower-case 'c' will not appear. Surely this problem has arisen many times before, but I can find no solution on the TKB. Help! Richard Oliver Abingdon, Oxfordshire richol@arrakis.es

Hi I began a new batch of the latest set today and I am finding the District Picklist only contains the entries I have made. What has happened to the list that had the complete names, etc.? It is really slowing down my data entry, and is also beginning to annoy. I tried downloading the latest picklist from WinBMD, but the message coming back says that I have the latest list. Kind regards Gordon Randall
Gordon I am fairly new to this and my first set up, February 2011, lost the Picklist. The instructions I got were from my coordinator, Derek Lowe, where:- However I suspect that what has happened is that you have misread the instructions I sent you with The supplementary file as it should not be in the Original Files folder it should be in the Files folder. If you move the file, i.e. WinBMD_Supp_Districts.txt into the Files folder your problem should disappear and Hendon,5e and Hendon,5f will appear on your picklist when you start the name and you can select the correct one on the picklist either by clicking on it or typing the number next to it. Regards Derek So it could be that the Downloaded Picklist is in the wrong place. Hope this helps. Gordon, This suggestion is unlikely to fix your problem. Here's the quickest way: Make sure you are not running WinBMD Look in your WinBMD folder, you will find a file called WinBMD.ini Open that file with Notepad Right at the bottom you will see a line which says something like DistrictFileVersion=up0ZjJ3LgYz3jp8mYqnIPw Change 'something' in that string of characters, for example change the "Pw" at the end to "xx" Save the file Now when you start WinBMD it will download the district file for you again. I have tried numerous times to install BMD on my Vista laptop, but still get the run-time error 429. I have very linited knowledge on the pc, so do not know if I am doing something wrong. Is anyone else having this problem? I have installed it on my other laptop Windows 7 without any trouble. I may be the transcriber Richard Oliver mentioned. I also received the run-time error 429 message every time I tried to run WinBMD under Windows7, as a standard User. The following procedure is the method I used to overcome this problem: 1/ Download and install WinBMD Version 5 under the Administrator account. 2/ Shut down and restart the PC before opening WinBMD. 3/ Run the program under the Administrator account. 4/ If step 2 is not followed then it seems that the Output file is not saved when you exit the program. (This happened to me with a page of transcriptions.) 5/ Use the program for at least one page of transcribing (and send to BMD) before downloading and installing the update to Version 6.1 There is no way the program would install correctly or run under a User account. Under the User account, It appeared to install correctly (and I tried reinstalling at least 4 times) but every time I tried opening it (from the WinBMD.exe file) the error message would pop up “ Run-time error ‘429’. ActiveX component can’t create object.” I suspect those who have had no problems with WinBMD on a Windows 7 PC (and there must be many) have installed and run the program under the Administrator Account, which is not strictly the correct way to use this operating system – according to Mr Microsoft. Anyway, try this fix and post back on whether successful or not. -----Original Message----- From: Allan Raymond Sent: Monday, May 09, 2011 8:17 PM To: freebmd-admins@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Runtime Error 429 User Account Control If you go into your Control Panel and then select User Account all will be revealed.
