    1. [FreeBMD-admins]Important Changes to FreeBMD-Admins mailing list - Revised draft taking on board some of Barrie's points
    2. Jeff Coleman
    3. Dear FreeBMD transcriber This mailing list is delivered through RootsWeb, which has provided mailing list facilities for Family History and similar interest groups for about 20 years. RootsWeb will shortly be discontinuing mailing lists. Archived messages to the Rootsweb list are expected to remain at https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/search?q=freebmd-admins We have arranged to replace the FreeBMD family of mailing lists using a new provider, Groups.io The replacement for the FreeBMD-admins mailing list is at https://freebmd.groups.io/g/Advice and will be named FreeBMD-Advice If you have not joined the new list and wish to do so, there are two options 1. Send an email to Advice+subscribe@FreeBMD.groups.io <mailto:Advice+subscribe@FreeBMD.groups.io> You will then receive an email asking you to confirm your wish to join the list, which you simply have to reply to. 2. You can wait until you receive an Invitation from me to join the new list. The invitations contain a link to 'accept the invitation'. If you click on that link you do not need to confirm your wish to join the list. Invitations will be sent before the closure of the Rootsweb mailing list. In either case, if you are not already on any other Groups.io mailing lists then you may need to create a login with your email address and a password that must be at least 6 characters long. The invitation will come from Advice@FreeBMD.groups.io Moderators <mailto:Advice@FreeBMD.groups.io%20Moderators> Once you have subscribed to the new list, you can adjust whether you receive every message or a 'Digest' of some sort at https://freebmd.groups.io/g/Advice/editsub We recommend that you choose either Individual Messages: You will receive each message in an individual email or Daily Summary: A daily summary, delivered in the morning, of the group's messages from the previous day. If you have any questions about these arrangements, please email Advice+owner@FreeBMD.groups.io <mailto:Advice+owner@FreeBMD.groups.io> Happy transcribing Best regards Jeff List admin, FreeBMD mailing lists

    3. When I posted the note about the end of Windows 7 support on the FreeBMD lists I also posted it to another list that I manage, the Glamorgan list. This was one of the replies received. I can't vouch or its accuracy. It may be worth checking out. Jeff List admin, FreeBMD mailing lists -- Hello Jeff and List I occasionally use this site, so the advice should be sound. This is the message I had from them today: Windows 7 is done. Here's how to get Windows 10 for free RIP Windows 7. If you haven't upgraded yet to Windows 10, follow these simple steps. January 14, 2020 9:06 PM PST Microsoft is encouraging Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10 before support for the former ends in January 2020. Stephen Shankland/CNET With support for Windows 7 officially over as of today, Microsoft is encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 10 to keep devices running securely and smoothly. On Microsoft's website, the Windows 10 Home operating system costs $139 to download. However, you don't necessarily have to shell out the cash: A free upgrade offer from Microsoft that technically ended in 2016 still works. When Windows 10 was first released in July 2015, Microsoft offered an unprecedented free upgrade offer for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users, good through July 2016. But in 2017, Ed Bott of CNET sister site ZDNet reported that the free upgrade tool was still functional. I tried it out in November 2019, and was able to upgrade a 2014 Dell OptiPlex 9020 desktop from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. As of January 2020, readers are still emailing me and commenting below, saying that it's worked for them as well. https://www.cnet.com/how-to/windows-7-done-heres-how-to-get-windows-10-for-f ree/?ftag=CAD-04-10abf6e&bhid= Regards Gareth On Tuesday, 14 January 2020, 12:24:50 GMT, Jeff Coleman via GLAMORGAN <glamorgan@rootsweb.com> wrote: If the file converter is useful, please advise what it is and where from. 3. Hi all, Any user of any windows 7 or earlier systems would be well advised to update to Windows 10. The problem with Windows 7 and earlier is that hackers may have found errors that allow access to the system via the back door. The latest versions of Windows 10 work and feel just like Windows 7 but don't have the potential security risks. When it comes to it, the decision is yours! Regards Brian Smart -----Original Message----- From: Brian M Clark [mailto:bmc@bmclark.plus.com] Sent: 14 January 2020 18:40 To: Q&A for FreeBMD transcribers Subject: [FreeBMD-admins]Re: Windows 7 Chris Win7 will continue to work as long as you want it to. I believe some people still use Win98 though not for web activity. Main thing is to use common sense with internet activity. FireFox and Chrome are continuing to support Win7 for the time being. Eventually however, websites will start to mark Win7 as unsupported and many won't work with IE11 (the default browser) - especially financial ones. There is another way to continue using your PC as normal apart from web activity. It will depend on how much cross over activity you have between the web and programs you run on the PC. What you can do is to install Linux on a flash drive (I actually have Linux Mint on a dual boot)) and use that for all web activity. From what I can remember there's no need to re-boot to switch from Win7 to Linux as it runs from a USB drive. 3. I kept using Windows XP for several years after it was no longer supported by Microsoft. Never had any problem; and, I didn't even have an anti-virus package installed. And, I did lots of online banking. I've always believed that the best anti-virus is some simple common sense. * Microsoft doesn't send out updates via e-mail attachments. * No bank will ever send you an e-mail asking you to click on some link to verify your account number. (Obviously, if a bank can't keep track of which account number belongs to which customer you need a new bank!) * Beware of any e-mail with a "from address" that looks like some kind of randomly-generated gobbledygook. * Quickly delete an e-mail that says something like: "We've detected that your computer is infected with a virus. Run this attachment to fix it." (Duh! They're trying to trick you into INSTALLING a virus!) * If in doubt about any link in an e-mail, hover over it with your mouse to see where it actually points to. * Most e-mail providers have pretty effective spam filters that screen out junk like I have described so that you rarely ever see them. If you do get much of this stuff you probably need a new e-mail provider. Your computer won't get infected with some malware simply by having it connected to the Internet. In every case that I've aware of, you have to get tricked into clicking on something you shouldn't click on, so just follow some common sense like I have described. Windows 7 already has an anti-virus (Bitdefender) built into the operating system. Anyway, those are my $0.02 (or £0.02, 2d, etc.) Charles Bailey On 2020-01-14 07:57, John Stead via FREEBMD-ADMINS wrote: > Hi Chris > > The worst thing (or nearly) that I and a number of others ever did was to > move away from Windows 7, albeit that I believe that 8 was even worse than > the 10 that I upgraded to. 3. Chris WinBMD and BMDVerify work perfectly well on Windows 10. Latest versions are available via https://www.freebmd.org.uk/addons/ I do not think there is any point in moving to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 when Windows 10 is available. However Windows 10 can run a bit slowly on machines designed for Windows 7. The BBC article has advice on itunder the heading "What should you do with your Windows 7 PC?" Depending on what else you want to do using the internet or email you might think of getting a new computer with Windows 10 on it. If you are keeping your Windows 7 one for anything that does not involve the internet, your Windows 10 one does not have to be a very high specification. Many newer computers have much smaller hard drives than were popular ten years ago. Some people use an older computer running Windows 7 (or earlier) for transcribing, but not connected to the Internet, and transfer images and transcription files to and from their internet device to their 'Transcribing Computer', I understand. My suggestion is that you get advice from someone you know personally who has computer expertise, if possible. Personally I like to do transcribing and verifying using an old flat-screen TV as a monitor, as the big image makes things easier to read. Many newer computers have HDMI connectors which allow you to use a TV as a monitor even if they only have tiny screens themselves.
