From other vendors, there are rare Parliamentary Paper journals of Davidson, Forrest, Stuart and Wells. >> Important Australian Aboriginal material includes the Report of the Horn Scientific Expedition (four volumes, 1896), assorted titles (one signed) by Spencer and Gillen, T.G.H. Strehlow's Songs of Central Australia (1971), and the very rare complete set of Carl Strehlow's Die Aranda- und Loritja-Stamme in Zentral-Australien (seven parts, 1907-1920), inscribed by the author. >> The art and literature section, although small, contains some genuine treasures. Not least is a wonderful copy in the original binding of the first Australian children's book, A Mother's Offering to her Children (published in Sydney in 1841). Of singular interest is a mint copy of Donald Friend's masterwork Bumbooziana (one of only 150 signed copies, bound as issued), as well as the printer's retained master copy of the unbound sheets (signed, in mint condition, ideally suited to a designer binding), and a bifolium of Friend's richly-illustrated original manuscript – a variant in both text and all illustrations to the version that was published. The colonial artist Benjamin Solly is represented by a fine pen-and-wash sketch, 'Looking West from Encounter Bay Sth Australia 1852'. >> Other rare published works include John Lewin's Birds of New South Wales (1822); The Hobart Town Almanack (1829, the very rare first issue of the almanacks of James Ross); an unbroken 42-year run of the main regional newspaper of its day, The Northern Territory Times (from June 1890 to June 1932, the last issue published); John Whitehead's The Exploration of Kina Balu, North Borneo (1893); a lavish prospectus from the South Australian Company (1838, apparently unrecorded); and Nathaniel Ogle's The Colony of Western Australia (1839, the first issue, with the much superior map). >> Maps, photographs and manuscripts round out the first session of this interesting and eclectic sale. Important photographic items include a unique hand-coloured half-plate ambrotype of an Australian outback cattle station (circa 1855-65); Duryea's Adelaide Album (1866-67), with the very rare panorama of the fledgeling city; and an 1880s album of Captain Sweet's Views of South Australia (vintage full-plate photographs including a group portrait of Aboriginal school children at Point McLeay). >> Military history is another strength of the sale.
