Hello members, Am forwarding an email that (A). might interest some and (B). some might be able to help Ross Please respond to him directly, thanks Ros ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ross Thomas" <[email protected]> I hope someone can help me with more information on this topic. A community of Irish orphans developed at Sandy Creek, a settlement that grew around the 'Irish Harp Hotel' built circa 1850 by Peter McKeown on part-Section 3019, Hundred of Barossa, bought from Wilhelm Temme in 1849. Two of these orphans were Bridget and Margaret McGrath sent to South Australia from the North Dublin Workhouse in 1849 - Bridget aged 14 years and Margaret a little older, both orphaned by the Great Famine and arriving on the 'Inconstant'. Daniel Hall, who farmed near the Enterprise Mine, married Bridget McGrath at Gawler in 1851 and they had many children at Allendale and Stone Hut before moving to the Flinders Ranges. Here they carted ore from the mines, surveyed land, farmed wheat and gathered sandalwood for the China trade. Margaret McGrath seems to have just disappeared - a search of marriages provides little. Another Irish lass, Lettitia Redpath who may have been part of the Sandy Creek community, married at Lyndoch Valley in 1854 to William Greenfield (1818-1872) and they went on to found that vast pastoral holding of Purple Downs, South Gap, Roxby Downs, etc north-west of Port Augusta. A grandson of Daniel Hall would later marry into the Greenfield family. Can anyone help with more information on: 1. The Irish Harp Hotel? 2. The Irish community at Sandy Creek? 3. What happened to Margaret McGrath? 4. Any stories relevant to the Halls or Greenfields? Ross Thomas (Canberra)
