This is from Alona Tester's Lonetester Blog................. Cornish Genealogy For this post I have chosen to exclude commercial data websites such as findmypast.co.uk, www.ancestry.co.uk, and thegenealogist.co.uk all of which I have used at various times, but those listed below are all free. *A2A (Access to Archives) *http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/advanced-search.aspx?tab=1 The A2A website is a seriously awesome website. It is an amazing resource not just for Cornwall, but for the whole of the UK. Archives and repositories around the UK have indexed much of their holdings, much of what you won’t actually find online. *Cornwall** Family History Society *http://www.cornwallfhs.com/index.php Since its beginning in the mid-170s, the Society has aimed to become a ‘centre of excellence’ by encouraging Cornish family history research. Along with publishing a quarterly Journal, the Society has co-ordinated the transcription and indexing of over 5 million original records so far, as well maintaining a research library in Truro for members and the general public. *Cornwall GenWeb* http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engcornw/ Useful for all the links it contains, especially the surname and parish lists. *Cornwall** Record Office* http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=14569 If you happen to be in (or visiting) Cornwall, the Cornwall Record Office is one of those places that should be on top of your list. While they don’t have a lot of records online, they do have a LOT of records which they can search for you. *Cornwall Parish Registers 1538-2010* https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1769414 FamilySearch currently have images (over 200,000 pages of them) of Cornish Parish Registers. These are ÍMAGES ONLY, not indexed. But they have been grouped into years and parishes, to help you narrow down what you’re looking for. These registers contain baptisms, marriages, banns, and burials. And absolutely amazing collection of records! *FamilySearch Wiki: Cornwall* https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Cornwall_Church_Records While you’re on the FamilySearch website, be sure to check out the Wiki for Cornwall, as it has lots of useful bits you’ll learn. *Cornwall** Online Census Project *http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kayhin/ukocp.html The Free Census Project (FREE-CEN) is transcribing ALL of the UK 19th century census returns in create an online “free-to-view” searchable database. It is part of an initiative helping to make high quality primary (or near primary) records of relevance to UK genealogy conveniently and freely available online. The Cornish ones can be found on FREE-CEN using the link above. *Cornwall** Online Parish Clerks (OPCs)* http://www.cornwall-opc.org/ Love the OPCs. This project aided by volunteers parish-by-parish, the Cornish OPC database contains over 2.5 million records covering: Baptisms, Baptisms (Non-Conformist), Banns, Marriages, Burials, Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates, Person Search, Apprentice Indentures, Bastardy Bonds, Emigration, Hearth Tax, Institution Inmates, Land Records, Memorial Inscriptions, Muster Rolls, Parish Settlements, Protestation Returns, School Admissions, Voters Lists and Wills. *Cyndi’s List: **Cornwall* http://www.cyndislist.com/uk/eng/counties/con/ If you’re not sure where to look next, check out Cyndi’s List to see what else might be around. *Cornish Mining Index* http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/jumppage-cmi.htm If you have family from Cornwall there’s a huge chance that somewhere along the line you have mining ancestors. This website lists 16,000 of them. *Federation of Old **Cornwall** Societies* http://www.oldcornwall.org/ (current http://www.oldcornwall.net/ (new from 2014) Find out what ‘Old Cornwall Societies’ exists. This website lists them all. The organisation for those who love Cornwall. I’ve given two links as it looks like they’re in to process of slowly changing over. *GENMAPS: **Cornwall* http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_Pages/ENG_pages/corn.htm There comes a time in our research when we need to look at a map to see what place is where, what places are nearby, what parish it lies in and so on. At GenMaps you can find some fabulous maps and not just for Cornwall either. *GenoGold* http://www.genogold.co <http://www.genogold.com/>Ok, I haven’t used this site heaps, but it contains useful “elusive genealogical data, reliable searchable databases & useful family history links, without the heavy-duty approach. GENUKI is a website maintained by volunteers which provides a virtual reference library of genealogical information relating to the UK and Ireland. Divided into counties, each county then is divided into sub-categories starting with Archives & Libraries, and finished with Visitations. A wide range of other indexes and transcriptions are also available for most counties, these may include parish records, wills, monumental inscriptions etc. ============================================= The following links are ones that I have not used myself, but looked useful so thought I’d throw them in for you *Cornish Cemeteries* http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~chrisu/index.htm Not extensive, but it doesn’t have to be if it has the names you’re after. *Cornish Surnames* http://www.cornishsurnames.com/ Dedicated to helping families establish their Cornish roots. *Cornwall** Mapping* http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/Default.aspx?page=17724 Links to not only interactive mapping, but also other mapping resources, including maps detailing where monuments are. *Cornwall** Maritime Museum *http://www.nmmc.co.uk/index.php?/collections/content/research_from_home Contain some very useful links for those who had mariners in their family. *Cornwall** Online *http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/resindex.htm This is a general site about Cornwall, but it is their list of towns that is useful, for giving you information about each place. *Passenger Lists from **Cornwall** 1836-1851* http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~boneplace/passenger/list.html This website lists 8 passenger lists all from Cornwall and headed to New York. Another one, as I didn't log on between when Vanessa's first message arrived and now. I can't believe it's a year since we put the final touches on the History, let alone since Tim left us. Margaret, I am thinking of both of you, and thanks to Tim for his time, work at and dedication to the Group. An A4 book 11 chapters and every member during those 10 years listed. A few copies left. Let me know if you want one $25. What a wonderful legacy he left. Monthly meetings, specialist groups, and an excellent Resource Room etc. So when you are pondering tomorrow over your family tree - remember Tim. I'm afraid the database that the CFHS has put together isn't free, as they charge a fee for it over and above the membership of the Society (I thought it would come with joining up, but alas it doesn't!) David Holman told me at AFFHO last year that it cost them a lot to get the work for it through and it hasn't yet yielded the money they hoped it would. But I'm assured by my distant relative at the Cornwall Record Office that the CFHS went to a lot of trouble to check and recheck the info, so it should be worth paying for. I paid for it for 6 months but then let it lapse because I was too busy to find time to use it! Intend to subscribe to it again after I get back from this year's travels. Cheers, Jan Lokan The a2a site has been very useful for me. ________________________________________ From: fpfhg-list-bounces@rootsweb.com [fpfhg-list-bounces@rootsweb.com] on behalf of Ros Dunstall [daisygirl.1212@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, 2 August 2013 3:01 PM To: FPFHG Subject: [FPFHG-LIST] Cornwall research links - Free I have posted this also on FB page but as many aren't on there I thought this would be useful to those who may have Cornish research. We focus on hard-to-find records, with a total of c.411,740 records with c.1.2million more on the way”. *GENUKI: **Cornwall* http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/ I’m a big advocate of the GENUKI website, as there is SO much info contained in it. GENUKI is a website maintained by volunteers which provides a virtual reference library of genealogical information relating to the UK and Ireland. Divided into counties, each county then is divided into sub-categories starting with Archives & Libraries, and finished with Visitations. Details on what records exist and where to find them are listed. *Cornwall** Parish Register Index *http://www.cornwalleng.com/ If the FamilySearch and FreeREG websites aren’t enough, and you still want more Cornish Parish Registers, here’s a small website that someone has created, and they are adding in the Parish Registers *The West Briton Newspaper* http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wbritonad Transcripts of Births, Marriages, and Deaths – as well as Fairs, Fishery reports, Court reports, separation notices, absconded apprentices, Coroner’s Inquests, etc., all under “News” – are available by using our search engine, or accessing the year you choose, below. *UKBMD: Cornwall* http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/county/cornwall/parish_records/ This website links to web sites that offer on-line transcriptions of UK births, marriages, deaths and censuses. Hi All While we are all busy tomorrow 2 August take a moment to remember Tim Wing founder of FPFHG who went to join his forebears a year ago. Personally he rekindled my long dormant interest in family history which has led me to some interesting places and to meet some very hospitable third cousins. He badgered me to come along to an early meeting in 1997 and I was once again hooked. So to repay him after 10 years I badgered him to write the history of the group. I rejected his first effort - several A4 pages - and after many other people's involvement we have Relative Thoughts A History of the first ten years of the Fleurieu Peninsula Family History Group. Vanessa Catterall Sent from my iPad

Sorry about your rhubarb Ros, unfortunately I do not have a green thumb and buy most of my veges, however, I do have a question that maybe you could pass around, I believe we have heard someone in the Group discussing Dog Kennels,(boarding) 2 nights mid September as we are going to a wedding. Hi Lynn, My worry with the Bell book was that it had not even been assessed and/or catalogued and I don't think whoever had donated it to the Noarlunga Library would have been pleased. I did note last time that all the old faces in the Noarlunga Centre Library had gone, it was more apparent to me as I have been in Europe and Canada over the past 8 weeks.
