Hi, I am searching for the family of Stephen C. Fowler. He was born in NY approx 1813. I have found him in the 1840 Census for Armstrong County, Pa: Stephen C. Fowler 1 male under 5 1 male 20 and under 30 1 female under 5 1 female 20 and under 30 occupation: manufacture and trade I also found him in the 1850 census for Eldred Township, Jefferson County: Stephen C. Fowler age 37 born in NY Lavinia age 22 born in PA Mary I. age 4 born in PA Jonathan W. age 12 born in Pa There are a couple of question that these two census records raise. 1. What happened to his wife? If there was a female age 20 and under 30 in 1840, Lavinia in 1850 at age 22 was too young to be his wife and be the mother of a 12 year old son, unless the census taker wrote her age wrong. Or was she a second wife, if so what happened to the first wife? 2. What happened to the first daughter? If there was a female under 5 in 1840, Lavinia would be too old to be the same female. 3. I know that my ancestor, Jonathan W. Fowler was born in 1839 [date of birth on his tombstone], so the age 12 in 1850 is close to the right age. He could also be the male under 5 in 1840 Census. Does any of this make sense to anyone?? I ran out of time at the library to look up the 1860 census to see where Stephen was and who was with him. I do know from the index that Jonathan was on his own, the index list Jonathan Fowler, Jefferson Co. Heath Township pg 271 and Stephen Fowler, Jefferson County, Eldred Township pg. 120. If anyone has access to these records and could look them up for me, I would greatly appreciate it. I only had a couple of hours at the library in Clarion County, where I was able to look at the Jefferson County Census records. My hometown doesn't have these records (I live in Bedford County, PA) If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it. Jonathan married Catherine Dunkle, b. 1864 in Sigel, PA; on May 12, 1885 in Brookville, Jefferson County, PA. She died 12-12-1894, age 31. Jonathan died 1916. They are buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, just east of Sigel, PA. The 1900 census for Jefferson County, Eldred Township shows this for Jonathan: Jonathan W. Fowler b. 5-1838 widow Adam Fowler b. 11-1886 son Elsie* Fowler b. 11-1883 daughter Maggie E. Fowler b. 1-1889 daughter [my great grandmother] Mary C. Fowler b. 10-1891 daughter. * the name is very hard to read, may be either of these or maybe something else. I do know that Maggie's middle name was Ellen, so it can't be Ellen, or maybe it was. Who knows? Thanks for taking time to read this and for any answers anyone can come up with. Sue
