Family story: Ancestor Fowler was on the crusades with King Richard, when, answering a call of nature during the night, he stood on a cactus plant in his bare feet, letting out an almighty shriek, which aroused the whole camp which thought it was being attacked. At this point, the enemy did in fact attack, and the King being so impressed by Fowler's obvious good eye site, knighted him on the spot, and instructed him to henceforth wear the head of the vigilant owl as his crest. Incidentally my Fowlers came from Cork in the south of Ireland, but I don't think we are related, and there may have been two or more other branches who settled here.
