Notes for SIMMONS FOWLER: See HOUSE OF FOWLER by Grover Parsons Fowler, Page 61-63 To: otime1@yahoo.com Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 20:36:23 -0700 Subject: Re: Richard Fowler From: johnw6636@juno.com David, Researched the Quaker records and also the Fowler books and now can make the connection. Simmons Fowler married Mary Sears. They had two children that we can identify...Martha, the oldest and Simmons, born about 1867. Young Simmons married Sarah Walker. Sarah and Simmons are the parents to our Simeon (Simmeon) that we've been researching....Our Simeon has two daughters he named after his mother and grandmother besides other children. After reading the Quaker files, it appears that the elder Simmons was having a problem with the military...he seemed to be a pacifist......Anyways, the Sears family and other Fowlers served honorably during the Revolutionary War. It appears as if Mary, who's listed in the South Carolina census, left Simmons for one reason or another because Simmons remarried a Mary Stanton in 1807 in Virginia. Every family has it's black sheep and Simmons apparently was the Fowlers. He appears to be in hiding during the Revolutionary War. There are a few paragraphs in the House of Fowler that are in error regarding Simmons and his connection to the ! Sears family...Another indicator is the usage of Simeon and dirivatives of Cassandra during the generations. In 1844 Simeon Cass Fowler was born in Mississippi and ended up in the Antioch, Johnson County, Texas cemetery and Levi, the son of Thomas of Tennessee, just a few miles down the road in Johnson County, Texas.... Where the confusion starts is when people start interchanging the given name and surname. On page 61 HOF the author makes the statement that Simmons is prominent in the mm, the family by that name being large and he apparently takes his name from them... though I find no evidence that they are related kin....Simmons given name was Simmons and actually he is no relation to the surname Simmons. The author appears to have wandered here a little mixing surnames.....Simmeons did marry Mary Sears and his brother John maried Elizabeth. Their parents from the Prince George area are Paul and Elizabeth. They appear to have 10 children, 9 of which are girls. On page 62 we learn that Martha is born 8/28/1765, daughter of Simmons and Mary. On page 67 one finds Mary still present in March of 1771 and also in 1780 she's mentioned. No mention of Simmons. Looking through the LDS site under Simmons Fowler, one finds him marrying a Sarah Walker. His birth is listed as abt. 1767. Under the same site his birth is listed as 1777 to a Simmons Fowler and Marry Sears. We now have two children for Simmons and Mary. Considering that Martha was born in 1765, the 1667 date for the you is more reliable. I've found the LDS site to be very liberal in it's dating process. Anyways, the elder Simmons doesn't reappear until 1800 and we find him always losing hats...On July 18, 1807 our elderly Simmons remarry ...His bride is Mary Stanton. In the 1790 Federal census one can find a Mary listed in the Laurens County S.C census, living near Richard and Joshua....She's there well into the 1800's. The probable reason the younger Simmons is not listed is that Mary is the head of the household and Simmons and wife are taking care of her. She's in her fifty's in 1790. More free lands are opening in the south as Alabama is being settled and young Simeon (Simmeon), son of Simmons and Sarah, is shown staking a claim and marrying Letty McGowen on May 15, 1818 in Madison County. Obviously Sarah and Simmons had a daughter named Elizabeth because in the same records she's marrying a McGowen, we find a James also in the area....Anyways, Simeon and Letty name their first son Richard, probably named in honor of the uncle or older cousin who he had known as a father figure all of his life. Simeon and Letty have daughters Sarah, Mary, etc. A son James and numerous other names that seem to prevail in the Fowler linage. >From Alabama the family migrates to Tennessee, then Mississippi in the 1840 census and Wood County, Texas in 1860. Finally Simeon Cass Fowler moves to Johnson County where a distant cousin Levi has taken over his father's ranch upon his father's death in 1868. The deceased father is none other than Levi Fowler, son of Thomas Fowler. The husband of Delinah Fowler. On my wife's last visit to her parents in January she did go over to the cemetery and get pictures of Delinah's and Levis headstones. I think the cemetery is between Alvarado and Grandview. Her parents live on the old site of the Antioch School on County Road 401. Simeon Cass Fowler is buried in the Antioch Cemetery. Just a little background material...still working on numerous other linages regarding the Rauschenbergs and Streets of Georgia, Cookes of Tennessee, Turners, Bashams, and Brooks......besides my linage in Prussia... I am in the developing stages of establishing a web site just for this line. If I am correct about your line, maybe you could stop by the site and add to the info. Even if its just a break down of your direct line. I have lots to do still but trying to create our own little place on the web where we can all share info on our own lines. My direct line is Godfrey b.1670>Mark b.1703 >Richard> 1720 Richard 1750 >William 1796. As near as I can tell, branches of this line went to both Granville/Wake Co., NC and the Union Co./Spartanburg area of SC then on to TN and KY. Who are you researching? Hopefully, we can get enough researchers together that we can piece together a complete story of the various branches of this Fowler family.
