Hi Darlene, It would appear that the Lukes were English. The earliest that I have was a Nathaniel Luke, born about 1656 in England. The next generation was born in Woodbridge, Middlesex County New Jersey, where the family stayed until the migration westward in the early 1800's. Then they went through Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and on to South Dakota and Nebraska. Lydia died in Wisconsin. The rest of the family migrated to SD after the Civil War. Family tales indicate that George J Fowler's father drowned in Lake Michigan. I know nothing more about him or George. Any help will be most appreciated. Keep in touch. Cecil, I was so excited until you said they were English. There is a Scottish Luke surname. My Great Grandfather, Ezra Lonzo Fowler, bn 1842, in Ohio, always stated on census records that his mother (my GGGrandmother) was "born at sea" coming from Scotland, probably about 1821-1825. She married a Mr. Fowler, who Ezra stated was born in New York. At some point after their marriage, they migrated to Ohio, where Ezra and other children were born. I am told Ezra had brothers named George, Robert, William, and maybe Albert. From family chit-chat, there is evidence they left Ohio, for Indiana, and Michigan. I have Ezra's history from birth to death. He named his first son "George" and according to the naming pattern that the Fowler's used, George would be Ezra's father's name. I have researched the name George Fowler so much, I feel I know at least 75 of them. Would have been nice, but keep in touch.
