Kay, I'd like to propose an alternative ancestry for Dempsey William Fowler: I believe that Dempsey (b 1809, GA) was the first son of Samuel Fowler (b VA, abt 1786), and his first wife Lucy (b 1790, NC). Dempsey married Elizabeth Downs in DeKalb Co, GA in 1833. There was a Barney Downs in DeKalb in 1830, and I suspect this Barney was Elizabeth's father. All of the children of Dempsey and Elizabeth were born in GA. There is a Dempsey Fowler in Newton Co (a few miles east of DeKalb) in 1840. . Then, sometime after the birth of dau. Elizabeth in 1846 (and before the 1850 census), Dempsey moved his family to Randolph Co, AL, where wife Elizabeth died in 1852. Dempsey remarried (Mary Rogers) sometime after Elizabeth's death, and his next dau (by Mary) was born in 1854. Another researcher has indicated that Dempsey "remained in Randolph Co until around March of 1875 when his land was sold at public auction (taxes?). Shortly after March 1875 he moved to route 4, Duck Springs, AL (Etowah Co). He remained there until his death in October, 1882." In the meantime: Dempsey's father, Samuel, was drafted into military service in Elbert Co, GA in both 1814 and 1817, which may suggest this area as a birth location for Dempsey. By 1840, there is a clear record of Samuel and Lucy living in DeKalb Co, GA. They had three additional children after Dempsey (Russell, b c1825, Madison, b c1829, and Lousana, b c1831). Dempsey's mother, Lucy, died in DeKalb Co, GA in May, 1850, and by December, the then 64 yo Samuel married Eunice Hilborn, a 24 yo widow. At the time of the marriage, she had two young children (of unknown father), who took on the Fowler name. Samuel and Eunice had three addiitional children (including my ancestor Francis Marion), and the family moved to Alabama sometime after the birth of Francis in 1855. By the 1860 census, Samuel and his second family were living on property immediately adjacent to that of Dempsey and his family in Randolph County, AL. Samuel died on the farm in Randolph Co in January 1862, and Eunice remained there until her death in 1921. The first son of Dempsey and Elizabeth Downs was named Samual Barney Fowler. This appears to be the combination of the first names of Dempsey's father (Samual) and Elizabeth's father (Barney). There are a number of messages on this line at GenForum.com as well.
