When our Fowler family in Spartanburg got in touch with the County Sheriff, the County Commissioners, the County Attorney, the State Attorney General, the Governor etc. - they did nothing although the law for destruction of graves is severe and on the books in SC. The state ombudsman called me and asked how OLD the graves were. I said they went back to the late 1700's. He said, "Well, now, you know there are no remains left there now" Like THAT made a difference! It took legal action by our cousin Ken Smith and others a couple of years and finally the guy decided to sell the property (where he had destroyed our Fowler graves). So, our cousins and their lawyer got an injunction that he could not sell until he settled this lawsuit. Then and only then did he settle out of court and we got money from him to restore the graves, place the tombstones back and replace the ones that had been broken by his crew. A fence was placed around it with gravel inside with the money he had to cough up - plus our lawyer got a chunk of the money as well. We have to thank our cousins in Spartanburg for their work on this and not giving up when things got rough!! It seems it took about 3 years. Marian Bryan
