He was the son of William Fowler, court poet of James VI of Scotland( James I of England). This William was the 2nd son of Sir Richard Fowler II who d. 1477. Sir Richard II was the son of Sir William Fowler of Ricot, Oxford, who was fourth in descent from Sir Richard Fowler, a hero of the third crusade whose seat was at Foxly, Burks.
