    1. [FOWLER] Re: Randolph Co., Alabama
    2. Joe... Yes...I am the great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Blake who operated Blake's Ferry on the Tallapoosa west of Wedowee. (Thomas Blake m DeLaney Young, >son Isaac Blake; Isaac Blake m. Mattie E. Dorman, >dau. Lula Gadsy Blake; Lula Gadsy Blake m. Luther Clarence Fowler, >son William Jethroe Fowler; William Jethroe Fowler m. Marian McWhorter, >dau—me.) I have wonderful information on the Blakes thanks to a book written by Kate Blake Daus back in the 1950s called "Southern Blakes," which was passed down to me by the second wife of my uncle, Thomas Luther Fowler, now deceased. I am attempting to do three things: 1. Share my Blake information with anyone who needs it and enhance it if I can. Your website will certainly help there. Many thanks. 2. Trace the Blake female line through the Dorman, Young, and Vickers lines to "flesh out" the pedigree. I am "stuck" on Allen Dorman (b. abt. 1832 in GA), father of Mattie. He was married to Aurilla G. Vickers, daughter of Charles Dean Vickers and Martha Edmonds. I have information on Aurilla...I need information on Allen. 3. Trace the Fowlers (who married into the Blakes right and left). I am "stuck" on my great-grandfather, William Jethroe Fowler (b. 1849, d. 1919, buried in the Baptist church cemetery in Ranburne along with two of his brothers that I know of). One of his brothers, George Wilson Fowler, had a daughter (Mary Kate Fowler) who married Forney Linton Blake, my grandmother Lula's brother. (Oh what a tangled web we weave...) Since Cleburne County was formed out of Randolph County, I am putting out "feelers" in that entire area. The Dormans and Vickers lived in Heard County, GA, which is right next door. Ironically, my dad's folks were from Randolph/Cleburne and my mom's folks were from Cleburne/Carroll (GA). Neither family knew each other. Both families migrated to the Atlanta area (actually East Point), both daddies worked for the railroad, and it wasn't until the 1930s that my mom and dad found themselves living in the same neighborhood, met and married. Strange but true! Thanks for your response. I will look up the website and file it away in my favorite places. If I can help you with anything, please don't hesitate to ask. Judy in Newnan, GA

    1. [FOWLER] Re: (no subject)
    2. George... At this point I will take any scrap of information I can get. You are the first person I have made contact with who actually had Fowler relatives in Hightower/Cleburne County. I don't know if there were several lines of Fowlers there or not. My information on the Fowlers is so sketchy. In my direct line, everybody is dead except my aunt who is almost 90 and not in the best of health. She is Wilmer Fowler Hancock, my dad's sister, (children of Luther Clarence Fowler and Lula Gadsy Blake) and she was born in Hightower in 1910. Several of my Fowlers married into the Blake family of Randolph and Cleburne counties. In fact, William Jethroe's brother (George Wilson Fowler's) daughter, Mary Kate Fowler, married my grandmother's brother, Forney Linton (Uncle Bud) Blake. That means my great-great uncle's daughter married one of my great uncles! Go figure that one out!! Apparently, spouse pickin's were slim back then and a lot of girls married the boy next door. Mary Kate Fowler Blake (b. 6Oct1883, d. 5Dec1919 in Hightower) is buried in the Ranburne cemetery also beside George Wilson Fowler, her father. On the other side is Samantha C. ---, George's wife. (I took a photo when was there) Uncle Bud Blake remarried to Lena Rachel Harris in 1933. (AHA! One of your names!) Uncle Bud and Lena Rachel had one son, George Blake, born in Cleburne Co., who I understand is still living and resides in Florida. My aunt spoke with him when she lived in Florida in the early 1990s. Of the names you mentioned, only Mamie Lowry seems to jog something in my memory...but I will take any thread, no matter how small. What I am looking for is the line behind William Jethroe Fowler and his siblings, George Wilson, L.C., L.O., J.O., Cecil Mae (married J.N. Hand), Lula Fowler (married Johnson), and Mary Fowler (married White). If I have to come up three generations and backtrack, that is the way I will do it. Send me what you have and I will take it to my aunt and see if it jogs her memory. You are so nice to do this. Thank you so very much. Are you close by? I am in Newnan. Looking forward to hearing from you. Judy

    1. [FOWLER] Re: Fowlers of NC>SC>GA>AL
    2. Judy... Thanks for the info. I will write those names down. That does seem to be the migration route from the Carolinas. I have detailed information on the other side of my dad's pedigree, the Blakes. Although I believe they migrated to Alabama earlier, in the 1820s, they took the same route...from Isle of Wight Virginia in the 1700s to Wake Co., NC to Jackson Co, Ga to Hall Co, to Carroll Co. and on to Randolph Co. in Alabama. We need to get our mindset on the happenings of those days...land was opening up due to the Indian lands being ceded. Maybe there was a frequently used trail that everybody traveled on to get to the new available land. There is mention in the Blake book of the Blake family traveling in the early 1830s "50 miles over dangerous terrain from Carroll Co. to Randolph Co."I just have a feeling that my Fowlers came later, but I may be wrong. My concentrated explorings recently have been just on the net so far, except for a trip to Ranburne a few years ago to check out the cemetery. And I wasn't really that "into" this stuff yet. I am planning a trip to Heflin this spring. A friend of mine has a relative who is a retired tax assessor for Cleburne County. My great-grandfather, William Jethroe Fowler, and his brother, George Wilson Fowler, must have owned land, according to the word-of-mouth stories. There is another brother, L.C. Fowler, buried in the same cemetery (probably Luther Clarence since that was my grandfather's name), but I can't assume too much here. Maybe discovering the dates of purchase and/or transfer may help me put a time line on these guys. And maybe I'm way off...maybe William, George and L.C.'s parents (those are the ones I'm desperately trying to find) were the ones who came from the Carolinas. That would put their migration at the same time as the Blakes. Aaaghhh!!! This mystery is driving me crazy. Again, thanks again for responding. Any scrap of information at this point is greatly appreciated. Judy Fowler Kilgore [email protected]

    3. http://bluemoonempire.homestead.com/FamilyIndex.html FOWLER, JOHNSON, EDWARDS, DOCKERY, PILGRIM, HUTSON, WHITMIRE, BORN, GOOLSBY and more to follow. These families came from VA, SC, NC, GA and migrated on to other states. So many have web pages up now with their family history and I have started mine. It will be under construction until completed with my records and hopefully there will be some to contact me and allow me to link our families together. I will be more than happy to place in my "Links" icon those that have the last surname but not directly related. I am looking for family stories and memories to add also if you care to share with me. If anyone has any pictures I would appreciated putting them on my website. I would also like the permission of those that gave me their family history to publish it to this site. I await your reply to this request. Best Wishes Love & hugs Janis

    3. I just received some copies of letters from an elderly cousin of my fathers. In the letters which were written in 1964, there is discussion of a branch of Fowler's coming from Connecticut to the midwest (Ohio probably). While there they married into the Knox, Vanderbilt, and Wynkoop families. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Roger Dimick Beaumont, Texas

    1. [FOWLER] Matilda Fowler of Frederick County, Maryland
    2. Fred Hagan
    3. I am seeking information about the family/siblings of Matilda FOWLER. Matilda was born 26 October 1798 and died 5 May 1874, both in Frederick County, maryland. She married Francis HAGAN, Jr. (he was a barber). They had three children: 1. Ignatius, b. 1827; m. Mary McMAHON. 2. Isabella Francis, b. 1 April 1829; m. George W. WHALEY. 3. Margaret, b. 17 December 1832; never married (she died of T.B.). As far as I know these are all buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland. Matilda Fowler HAGAN is buried in a common grave with Eleanor A. FOWLER. Matilda was removed from a place unknown by Isabele E. ZIMMERMAN and placed in this common grave.

    1. [FOWLER] Fowler/Wilson connection
    2. I am wondering if there are any descendants of Nathaniel Mears Fowler on the list that might could help me with a Wilson connection? I descend from Nathaniel Mears Fowler, through his son, William Mancel Fowler. Mance's daughter, Maude Fowler Henthorne, was my grandmother. My aunt tells me that one of my grandmother's uncles married a woman who was first married to a Wilson. She had a child (by Wilson) who died and is buried at Wheelock Cemetary in McCurtain Co. OK in a plot with the Fowler family. My confusion stems from the fact that it has been said there is a Wilson connection on the Brannan side of the family. Credence is also lent to this by the fact that my grandmother's great uncle and wife (Robert R. Brannan & Missouri Goss Brannan) are buried in a Wilson Plot in Ft. Towson Cemetary. I noticed a posting on the Fowler forum that listed Fowlers in this branch with middle name Wilson. If anyone knows of a son of Nathaniel Mears Fowler who married a Mrs. Wilson, please let me know. Any pieces to the puzzle are appreciated! Karen Ray

Passing some Fowler info on to whoever might be related -this isn't my family but I thought it might be an example that you might never know where your relatives came from Found at ancestry.com over the new years ++++++++ FOWLER, Charles E. source: 1883 History of Henry and St. Clair Counties Missouri , National Historical Co., pg: 766 --- Charles E. Fowler, farmer and stock raiser, section 22, was born in Oldham County, Kentucky, February 15, 1855. Thomas C. Fowler, his father, was born in Brattleboro, Vermont. In early life he went on a vessel as a sailor and followed the seas for a number of years and then settled in Kentucky, where he was married to Miss Hattie McFadden, a native of that state. Subsequently he engaged in the mercantile business in Kentucky, where he resided until 1856, and upon moving to Missouri he located first in Carroll County, After living there nine years he went to St. Charles County, and here he was appointed railroad agent at Foristel, which position he occupied till his death, which occurred January 25, 1869. C. E. Fowler spent his youth until sixteen years old on a farm and attending the public school. In the spring of 1871 he commenced railroading, and was on the road as brakeman and fireman for about seven years. After leaving the business in 1878 he resumed farming in St. Clair County one year. He came to his present farm, which contains over 200 acres, in the spring of 1879. He is numbered among the thrifty farmers of this township. Mr. Fowler was married in this county February 10, 1880, to Miss Frances Williamson, a native of Missouri, and a daughter of John W. Williamson. They have one son, Winfield Scott; who was born March 13, 1882. Mrs. Fowler is a member of the M. E. 2. Helen Allen
    3. Jim Allred, Wiley Fowler and Rachel Lewis are my ggg grandparents through their son Wiley W. Fowler and Nancy S. Doss. Wiley W.and Nancy are on the 1850 Bibb Co., AL census. Wiley W.'s brother Miles was in the house with them. Wiley W. had been awarded land in Bibb Co. because of his services in the Mexican War. Miles was was born about 1822 and Wiley W. 1824 in SC. Wiley and Rachel lived in Spartanburg Co., SC and came to Coosa Co., AL in about 1832. We think Wiley W's middle name was William. Wiley Sr. died before the 1850 Coosa Co. census. Rachel can be found on the census 1860 thru 1880 in Perry Co., AL where she died 10 Mar 1880 according to an entry on the 1880 census. Other sibs of Wiley W. were Lewis m Lucinda Perkins, Elizabeth b. abt. 1820, Missouri b. abt. 1827. She m 1) William Foster and 2)Samuel L. Woods. I have Mary b. 1832 m. Newell Baker 16 Nov 1855, Coosa Co., AL, and Mahala A. Forler b. abt. 1834 m. Jesse Driver 21 Sep 1852, Coosa Co., AL. Also Martha Fowler b. abt. 1841. Mike Mizzell, my cousin through Griffins, Fowlers and Stanleys of Bibb and Perry Co., AL, is a descendant of a Harriett Fowler and his Mizzell ancestor. I had a Harriett b. 1830 dau. of Wiley and Rachel, but Mike says she was b. in 1815 in SC according to their family records. He does not know which Fowler was her father, but he does know she first married a Guthrie before a Mizzell. So I am uncertain whether she was a first child of Wiley and Rachel, a sister of Wiley who m. Rachel, or perhaps there were two Harrietts in this family. Rachel was a daughter of Ephraim Lewis and Margaret /__/. Ephraim was willed 1000 acres "S. of the Tennessee River" by his brother George Lewis. This was in Spartanburg Co., SC. Lawson Fowler, Sr. b. 1793 was a brother of Wiley Sr. Lawson m1) Mary Coxey in Rutherford Co., NC on 21 Dec 1812. All of his children were by her except the last one. He m2) Nancy Dacus on 4 Nov 1839 in Pinetucky, Perry Co., AL. They had one child, Mary, b. 1842 who m. a McCullen. Lawson and Nancy, dau. Mary McCullen and her dau. Mary are on the 21 Jul 1870 census of Cameron, Milam Co., TX on p. 263, dw. 769. Lawsons children by Mary Coxey were 1) Lawson Jr., b. 1818 m. Mahala Gentry 31 Oct 1837 Perry Co., AL 2) Cynthia b. 1820, m. John Ratliff 18 Jan 1840; 3) Ellen Ellender m. William F. Church 4 Feb 1841; 4) Jane m. Barney Caldwell 19 Jan 1843; 5) Wiley m. Susan F. Nalley 18 Aug 1850; 6) John Wesley Fowler m. Nancy Davis 30 Jan 1864; 7) Martha J. m. John S. Collins 29 Jul 1848 I have candidates to be the parents of Lawson Sr. and Wiley Sr. and probable brothers but no proof. How did you become interested in these Fowlers? 1. FOWLER graves, Cocke Co., TN
    2. In my search for Joseph FOWLER who left Greenville Dist., SC, and went to Cocke Co., TN, I was alerted to the following cemetery at Josephs Chapel Church. I believe there are some of these folks that came from my Greenville FOWLERS, but cannot prove it as yet. I believe the above Joseph FOWLER was the father of Archibald FOWLER of Greenville, SC, and d. 1839. The following is the url for this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tncocke/cmjosch.htm There are of course many others buried at Josephs Chapel. The following comes directly from the site and was brought to my attention by the gentleman, Mr. Reed, who surveyed the cemetery. Josephs Chapel Cemetery dates back to at least 1844 and is located beside Keisling Road off of (as of 10/31/1999) highway 160 in the Centerview community of the 3rd Civil District of Cocke County, Tennessee. There are many unmarked graves. Listed below are the names found on tombstones along with birth dates, death dates, and any significant wording on the tombstones - which is shown on this document enclosed in parenthesis ( ). "Buried With" indicates there is more than one person buried in front of a tombstone. Submitted by W.
