This is copied almost verbatim from a book called " The Landed Gentry - American Families"... Some Fowler will likely connect. How about you, David Payne? FOWLER OF GEORGIA WILLIAM ERIC FOWLER, of Washington D.C., Banker in Virginia and Washington D.C., Vice President Virginia Bankers' Association 1908, and Vice President West Virginia Bankers' Association 1909, served in Great War as Major, Ordinance Department, specially promoted Lieutenant Col, subsequently Member of the Ordinance Board, was member of the U.S. Delegation to the 5th Pan American Conference, Santiago, Chili 1923. Member of the Sons of the Revolution, and Society of Colonial Wars, b. 28 September 1874; m.27th July 1921, the widow of Edwin T Earl of Los Angeles, and dau. Of William Jarvis. Lineage (of Fowler) _ The descent of Fowlers of Georgia from Francis Fowler, who emigrated to Virginia in 1635 has been fairly clearly established, although the exact line of descent of the branch we are treating is still a little obscure in the period of the first half of the eighteenth century. FRANCIS FOWLER, had a grant of 800 acres of land in James City Co. of Virginia, upon settlement in 1635, became a member of the House of Burgesses in 1642, and subsequently acquired further territory. He had two sons, 1. Bartholomew, who established himself in Henrico County, and was Attorney General of Virginia in 1699, until his death in 1703, and 2. John, ancestor of the South Carolina family. This JOHN FOWLER, whose lands extended along the Appomattox River, had three sons, John, Mark, and Godfrey. Godfrey's will, dated 1743, mentions his son Joseph, who had moved to North Carolina. This Joseph had six sons, one of whom, it is believed was the father of the John Fowler, who with his brother Moses, took up a grant of two hundred acres along the Tyger River, in South Carolina, in 1784. . This JOHN Calhoun FOWLER, of Spartenburg, S.C., married Nancy, daughter of Thomas Paden (see lineage of Paden) and died, having had, with other issue, a son, RILEY FOWLER, b. 1802, who removed from S.C. to Noonday Creek, Georgia. He m. Susannah, dau. Of William Crane, and d. leaving with other issue, WILLIAM ERIC, of whom we write. Audrey...no, I didn't know Fowlers were in Wake Co., although I suppose I should have. That seemed to be the migration path. Frankly I didn't know where to go since my backtrack trail ended with William J. Fowler and his brothers, George Wilson Fowler and L.C. Fowler in Ranburne, Alabama. I was just sort of reaching out to anyone who could give me a lead. And you have certainly done that. And you are right...family surnames have a way of working themselves into family given names and Wilson is all over the place in my Fowler family tree. I hadn't even thought of that. Luther is another given name that keeps cropping up. If you see any Luther Fowlers in the Carolinas, for gosh sakes please let me know. Thank you so very much for the lead. I will check it out. Judy

Delores, I am pretty sure there has been a separate index published for the House of Fowler. I saw it at the Texas State Library at Austin, TX. You should be able to get it on interlibrary loan through your local library. Their address is: Texas State Library State Archives and Library Building P. O. To respond to this email, please write to this address: [email protected] Please do not respond to the address that I am sending this from. Thank you. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC. The other day I wandered into one of my favorite shops for home decorating and made a marvelous discovery of a family Bible. This shop carried antiques as well as interior decorating supplies. The Bible was bought at auction, and the store is selling the Bible for $125.00. The Bible was given by Sylvester WARD to his wife, Honey Bee, on 1/5/1935. It is quite large and made of leather. It is in good condition. If any members of this family would like to purchase this Bible, please write me; and I will give you the name and phone number of the shop. The owner does not want dozens of unnecessary calls due to business. I thought that this might be of value to some of the WARD family descendants. I have no monetary interests in this -- just a desire to see this Bible in its rightful place with a family descendant. Godspeed... Someone requested that I post this to the list; I hope it is helpful to some of you. I tried to get the House of FOWLER several places as well as the internet but had no luck. One day I happened to ask the girl who handles magazines at our local Barnes & Noble about it. She gave me the info I needed. House of FOWLER was written by Grover Parsons FOWLER in 1940. I had to get it on special order through the B&N, and it had a waiting period of eight weeks. The book cost $119.00 bef. tax. It is well worth it for me. I am somewhat housebound at this time and live at the beach. You can guess that a tourist mecca like Myrtle Beach does not have the world's best library (although they certainly do the best they can!). Back to my reading! Do any of you get weird looks from your family when they see you reading something that looks like a dictionary and reads like an oversized family tree??? I'm getting a few right now! Godspeed... Dolores

Which FOWLER book is this again, please? I must have missed any earlier discussion about it - sorry! My own FOWLERS are those who left the Rye, NY area after the Revolution and went to New Brunswick, only in later years (say 1900's) some returning to settle in ME, MA and RI. Leslie
Folks, Just had to write and let you know that my long-awaited copy of the book, The House of FOWLER, came in at Barnes and Noble, and I picked it up yesterday. We won't discuss the hole it left in my pocket; I should have my head examined! I will say that it has some wonderful stuff in it. We had to go to Charleston today to move our daughter, and I read the entire way there and back, and read more tonight, and still don't think I've scratched the surface. I am also sure that any info in it should be backed up with your own research -- as is the case with most books. The sad part is that there is no index so it would make lookups very difficult. I do remember that someone wrote me about Moses FOWLER just recently, and I found some info in the book on him. Would that person please write me again? After I've had a chance to digest the book, (I've been waiting over two months for it to get here), I will try to, at least, send some of the records on FOWLERS that are included in the book to the list and see if that will help any of you. It is highly detailed with tons of people in it (and many pages), and I don't think that I could ever get them all straight, but I will try to figure out a way that I can offer some help to those of you who might need info. Godspeed... Dolores Pringle
Seeking any thread, hint, clue---anything regarding James N. Fowler. Using census information, he was born about 1811 in NY (except in the 1880 census which says he was born in CT.) I find him first in IL by about 1834. Son Francis C. was born in IL about then, and later census indicates that there was a James S. Fowler, age 16, in the household. Daughter, Laura V., born about 1837, somewhere in IL. First location I find for him is through his son, Henry R., Civil War records. Henry was born in Chatsworth, IL 17 Nov 1839. Next son, Charles N., born 22 Jul 1844 in Peoria, IL. And then Leetel (or Leete), born about 1846 in Peoria, IL. No record found of first wife's name, but she must have died shortly after the birth of Leete. James N. married Nancy Crow in Peoria 12 Sept 1848. Apparently she died, as a third marriage record is found in Fulton Co., IL to Magdalen Whitmore. In 1880, James N. is listed in the Peoria City Directory, and, in the 1880 census, he is shown with his son, Henry, at Henry's home in Iroquois Co., IL. So far a search of available NY records have not turned up James N. Fowler. Nor is there a record of his death in Peoria Co., Fulton Co., Iroquois Co., nor any of the counties to which his children moved and settled. Any connections gratefully appreciated, and any hints most welcome. Jeanne Fowler
My Fowler ancestors are supposed to have come from Georgia. I have never located them. My Grandma told me she thought his name was Harmon Fowler and his wife Tilda. Their daughter's name was Mary Catherine, born 1877 in Alabama. She died when my Grandma was 16. She married Charles Ashmore and his family came from Carroll County, Georgia so maybe the Fowlers came from Carroll County. I think Tilda could be a nickname for Matilda. I would love to find something about my Grandma's family. She died in 1974 and I still miss her very much. Lynda
On the Seabrook NH census you have two EBENEZER FOWLERS for both census. Is there anyone out there that could help me find out Who these Ebenezer Fowlers are and their families. I would be willing to send a little money if someone can help me solve this issue. Thankyou Gladys http://community.webtv.net/sassypup/GLADYSWEBPAGEABOUT
