Does anyone have a copy of the book, "History of the Fowlers"? I am interested in information on George Fowler, Halifax Co., Revolutionary Soldier of North Carolina or VA, 1782, son of Thomas, mentioned in his father's will of 1793. I think the page numbers are 50 and 702. Any help at all will be appreciated!
Does anyone have information regarding a George Fowler of the Halifax District in North Carolina? He received a voucher for his Revolutionary War service. I believe he is the George Fowler listed in Jefferson County, Georgia, in 1821 where he drew in the land lottery as a Revolutionary War soldier. Karan B. Pittman
Hi Denise, You could well be my knight in shining armour, please can you help me. For years I have been trying to find the parents of Edward Fowler , or Edward Fowler Parkes who was born in 1866 in Bilston, or Oldbury , Staffs, he married Hannah Share in 1887 at Normanton, Wakefield , Yorks. Hannah was born in 1866 Gornal, Staffs. I have a copy of the l891 Census with Edwards wife, Hannah and family with him but then they disappear again. On his marriage certificate, Edwards Father was written as John Fowler Parkes (deceased) but I know absolutely nothing else, and have been unable to verify that John Fowler did actually marry Hannah Parkes. I feel that Edward probably was named Fowler Parkes because his mother and father were not married at the time. Edward must surely be in the 1871 Census for Oldbury?? I would be eternally grateful to you if you were to confirm who my Great Great Grandad was. Yours in anticipation. David, Does the book "HOUSE OF FOWLER" contain lists of people named Fowler? Are these people from one area or all over the world? I know my ancestor Alexander Fowler was from Geneva, NY but can not find anything other then that. Do you think it would be worth it to me to try to get a copy of this book? Thank you, Rhoda Turner
Lori, I have two John Fowlers born about that time in my file from SC but different wife. Check my website at bottom of this mail for more on them. I found lots of the info in HOUSE OF FOWLER book. Hi Denise Thank you for responding so quickly, you have got my dilemma straight off in a nutshell. In the 1901 Census my Family is indexed under Towler at 27 Kenton Road Reference RG13/230 F109b:there you will find Edward Fowler age23(transposed I think should read 32), wife Emma 27, son Arthur E 5, dau Elsie 1month, and in the same household Albert Wiles, Emma's younger brother. The marriage certificate from 1895 gives names of John Edward Fowler age 26 Baker, of 31 Benn Street, Hackney son of John Fowler, Bricklayer marries Emma Wiles age 21 of 31 Benn Street, dau of John Wiles, labourer. John Edward Fowler died Jan 2nd 1945 age 76 in Byfield Cottage, Ellis Street, Boxford, Cosford, Suffolk witnessed by E. Fowler widow of same address. I have been unable to trace a birth certificate of John Edward or any mention in the census so I have no idea about his mother or any possible siblings. In short a brick wall. Hi John, I have looked over the 1901 Census for John Edward Fowler born abt 1869 in Kingston on Thames, Surrey and married to an Emma and find nothing.....Is he recorded under Fowler? or was there a misspelling of the name... I went to 1891 and found an Edward J Fowler who was b c 1869 but that was in Southwark, Surrey... The only John Fowler I can find in the 1901 born in Kingston, Surrey is 23 years old (c 1879) and a postman...mother is Emma.... Let me know what I am looking for...so I can try to work back for you.. As long as the Fowler list is hot, I'm going to toss mine out there again and see if anyone new has joined the list who might be related. John FOWLER, son of Nathan FOWLER and Elizabeth PEPPER(s), was b. abt 1826, possibly in Jackson or Gwinnett Co., GA. He married Sarah Ann NORRIS 14 Jan. 1847 in Gwinnett County and stayed there possibly until after the Civil War. Sarah Ann was the daughter of John "Jethro" NORRIS and Mary JOHNSON, found in the 1850 census of Gwinnett County. John FOWLER possibly served in the war with Co. B, 8th Regt., Ga State Guards as a Lieutenant, exiting service as a Lieutenent Colonel. A "John O.W. Fowler" is shown having served from Jackson and Gwinnett counties. Believe one of these initials may stand for "Oscar." Family stories say John came home from the war and was known as "The Colonel" in Campbell Co. Sarah Ann's parents moved to Fayette County sometime after 1850, along with Sarah Ann's sister, Lucy NORRIS, who married John Fowler's brother, Zephaniah FOWLER. I suspect that Sarah also moved to Fayette sometime after 1860, possibly when John joined the war effort. Her last child is said to have been born in Campbell County, GA in 1861. Campbell and Fayette's boundary switched often during that time in the Fairburn/north Fayette area, and Sarah and John FOWLER are found in Fairburn, GA (Campbell County) in 1870. Children of John FOWLER and Sarah Ann NORRIS, were: (1) Nancy Elizabeth FOWLER, b. 1848 in Gwinnett, m. John Pierce WALKER, son of Bartlett WALKER and Mary ABERCROMBIE. Marriage said to have taken place in Campbell County, but I cannot find a record of it. (2) William Jethro FOWLER, b. 1849 in Gwinnett Co. (shows as infant in 1850 census). William married Lucinda Caroline OWENS in 1866 in Meriwether County. She was the daughter of Martin OWENS and Martha KENNEDY or KANADY. William and "Lucy" appear in the 1870 Campbell County census, Campbellton Dist., with one son, OSCAR FOWLER. These are my great-grandparents. (3) George Wilson FOWLER, b. 1852 in Gwinnett Co. (Shows in 1860 census). George married Samantha C. HORNSBY in 1876 in Campbell County (have marriage record and info from living descendant). George's father, John FOWLER, worked on the farm of a Paul HORNSBY in the late 1860s (source: diary of Henry Newton Cochran who married Lucinda Owens' sister, Matilda.) (4) Mary Catherine (aka Molly, Polly, Mary Kate) FOWLER, b. 1854 in Gwinnett Co. (shows in 1860 census). "Mary Kate" married A.J. "Jack" WHITE in 1879 in Cleburne Co., AL (5) Avarilah FOWLER, b. abt 1857. Shows in 1860 census, then disappears. Thought to have died as a child, but not listed in Gwinnett County Deaths. May have been buried in the Fowler-Gresham cemetery which has been paved over. Nathan and Elizabeth also said to be buried there. (6) Joel B. FOWLER, b. 4 Dec 1861, family members say he was born in Campbell County. Joel married (1) Eliza A. BALLENGER in 1880 in Cleburne Co., AL. Eliza was daughter of Albert D. BALLENGER and Mary Elizabeth WALDEN. Joel married (2) Ella TWEEDELL in 1895 in Carroll Co., GA. Ella was the daughter of John T. TWEEDELL and Phoebe STEPHENSON. John FOWLER died sometime after 1873 and is said to be buried at Shadnor Baptist Church in Union City, Campbell Co. (now South Fulton Co.) but I have not been able to locate his grave. The family was said to have suffered greatly during reconstruction, lost their farm and most of their possessions. John may be buried in an unmarked grave because they couldn't afford a gravestone. John is said to have died from consumption contracted during the war. About 1878, Sarah Ann NORRIS FOWLER and all her children moved to Cleburne County, AL, where they are found in the 1880 census. They stayed there for the next 40 years, until some of the descendants began to move away. Most are buried in the Ranburne Baptist Church Cemetery in Ranburne (south of Heflin), Cleburne County, including: Sarah Ann NORRIS FOWLER (1828-1896) William Jethro FOWLER (1849-1919) Lucinda Caroline OWENS FOWLER (1847-1886) William's first wife Sarah Margaret VAUGHN HART FOWLER (1858-1938) William's second wife Nancy Elizabeth FOWLER WALKER John Pierce WALKER (Nancy Elizabeth's husband) George Wilson FOWLER (1852-1928) Samantha C. HORNSBY FOWLER (1854-1910) Mary Kate FOWLER BLAKE (1883-1919) (daughter of George and Samantha) Mary Kate FOWLER WHITE (1854-1887) daughter of John and Sarah Ann Fowler Eliza A. BALLENGER FOWLER (first wife of Joel Fowler) Mattie G. FOWLER GAY (daughter of William and Lucinda C, Owens Fowler) John O. FOWLER (son of William and Lucinda C. Owens Fowler) Cecil Mary FOWLER HAND, daughter of William and Lucinda C. Owens Fowler) Joseph Mercer HAND, husband of Cecil Mary Fowler L.O(scar) FOWLER, son of William and Lucinda C, Owens Fowler) Warner J. FOWLER, son of William and Sarah Margaret Vaughan Hart Fowler) Inez FOWLER, daughter of William and Sarah Margaret Vaughan Hart Fowler Plus many other descendants of these Fowlers. Some are buried at Union Hill Cemetery near Ranburne; some are buried in Bowdon, Carroll Co., GA. Seeking cousins, family information. Will gladly share what I have on this family and related lines. Many thanks ... Judy Fowler Kilgore Newnan, GA
My ancestor's brother, Alanthus "Lish" Fowler, married on 1 Nov 1848 Tennessee Ann Fowler (his cousin). They had two sons, James Edwin (DOB unk.) and Thomas Jefferson (b 1849). My grandmother, Nancy Jane Fowler, was born in Texas on February 28, 1861 and died in Paris, Arkansas on November 12, 1902. She married my grandfather, William Barton Smith on May 9, 1886. He was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on April 8, 1839 and died in Paris, Arkansas on April 10, 1910. Nancy Jane was married to Isaac Newton Mitchell and bore four children with him before she married William Barton Smith. I know nothing of Nancy's parents or siblings. I can only assume, because of her affinity for the nickname "Tennessee", she may have spent some of her younger life in the state of Tennessee. I will appreciate it ever so much if anyone can help me find my grandmother's genealogy. Cordially, William Allen "Bill" Smith
