    1. [FOWLER] Asahel Fowler
    2. Judy Hudson
    3. I am back and searching after taking a 'vacation' from this line. I am looking for information on Asahel Fowler. The folowing tidbit is from Dalton Twp., Muskeegon Co., Michigan web page. Asahel Fowler, in section 35, was born in Steuben Co., N. Y., in 1829, removed with his parents to Indiana in 1837, where his father died in 1841, when he moved to Michigan, and thence to Wisconsin in 1846, thence to Michigan in 1850, thence to California in 1852, back to Michigan in 1855. He was married at Hillsdale, Oct. 23, 1856, and came to Dalton in 1869. Does this connect with anyone? -- Judy Hudson =^..^=

    3. In my Fowler family there was a Tennessee Fowler (it was her actual given name) who married Alanthus "Lish" Fowler (cousins). My Tennessee married in 1848 and died in 1860, so she could not have been the mother of Nancy Jane. Also, I do not have the names of two infants born to Tennessee, but probably they did not live, which is why I don't have their names or sex. Tennesse's line was that of John B. Fowler and Elizabeth Lee. Perhaps one of her siblings had a child who began calling her Tennessee in memory of mine. These Fowlers were in Marshall Co, TN. 1. [FOWLER] Isaac Fowler, 1695-1773?, South Kingston, RI
    2. Mike Huggins
    3. It's great to see all the recent Fowler activity. I wish some of my other interest boards were this active. OK, I wondered if anyone has come across information about the parents of: Isaac Fowler; born circa 1695, location: not known; died in South Kingston, Rhode Island, between July 15, 1772 and May 10, 1773. Isaac was married to Mary Hopkins (born ca. 1700 and died before 1772), daughter of Samuel and Susannah (Cottrell) Hopkins, also of South Kingston. Isaac's children were Mary, Simeon, Hannah, Christopher, Deborah and Thomas. I'm a descendant of Simeon, who later moved to White Creek, Charlotte - now Washington - County, New York. My late grandmother once (back in the 40s) thought that Isaac was a son of John and Rose Fowler, but this isn't born out, as shown in recent posts to this message board. Therefore, I'm hoping that there might be somebody else out there interested in this Fowler line, who might have some additional info. (My Isaac Fowler info comes primarily from Kevin Bradford; and my grandmother Hazel Cornell Kilmer of Argyle, NY.) Thanks - Mike Huggins in Irvine, CA (formerly of Argyle, Washington County, NY; and great-grandson of Julia Fowler Cornell, daughter of David and Abbie (Niles) Fowler of Argyle and White Creek.

    3. Part 2 Generation No. 5 17. Rebecca5 Fowler (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1656 in Providence Co., RI, and died March 23, 1729/30. She married William Randall. He was born December 1647 in Providence Co., RI, and died April 11, 1712. Children of Rebecca Fowler and William Randall are: 29 i. William6 Randall, Jr.. 30 ii. Henry Randall. 31 iii. Jonathan Randall. 32 iv. Joseph Randall. 33 v. Mary Randall. 18. Henry5 Fowler IV (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1658 in Providence Co., RI. He married Abigail Hoyt. She was born Abt. 1658. Notes for Henry Fowler IV: Born in Providence, 1658. It is claimed that he married about 1680 to Rose, daughter of William Burton (Austin Gen. Dic. RI, p. 266). This information, however, is incorrect. His brother John was married to Rose Burton - see comments under John. He lived part of the time in East Chester; Constable there in 1691, in the Assembly in 1701, Supervisor in 1720, and was listed as 52 years old in 1710. He was at one time a Warden of Grace Church, Rye. He died at Mamaroneck in July 1734; will dated July 2 and proved July 12, 1734 (Book 12, p.189), brother Moses of East Chester was executor. His wife was evidently dead as he bequeathed her clothes to his daughter Anne. There is reason to believe that he had all his children by his wife, Abigail, sister of Moses Hoyt, who was the wife of Henry Fowler of East Chester, 1701, for we find in the town records that his eldest son Joseph was born Oct. 30, 1701. Children of Henry Fowler and Abigail Hoyt are: 34 i. Joseph6 Fowler, born October 30, 1701. 35 ii. Henry Fowler. 36 iii. Gilbert Fowler. 37 iv. Sarah Fowler. 38 v. Jane Fowler. 39 vi. Mary Fowler. 40 vii. Ann Fowler. 19. William5 Fowler (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1660 in Providence Co., RI, and died February 1711/12 in East Chester, Westchester Co., NY. He married (1) Mary Drake 1686. She died Bef. 1705. He married (2) Judith Southard Abt. 1705. Notes for William Fowler: Born in Providence, 1660; married (1) in East Chester, 1686, Mary Drake. He was in Flushing from 1687 to about 1705. In 1690, William deed land in Providence to his brother John. Nov. 25, 1691, he and his wife Mary sold the property he received from his father in Mamaroneck to his brother-in-law Richard Ward (sister Mary's husband) of East Chester ( Liber B, p. 128 ). He married (2) about 1705, Judith, daughter of John Southard of Hempstead and sister of Abigail Southard who married his brother George. In 1705-06, he returned to East Chester. He was in East Chester 1710, and the census of that year gives us his age as 50. He died Feb. 1712; will dated Dec. 8, 1711 and proved March 5, 1712 (Book 8 p. 93); brother George Fowler of Hempstead, Long Island was executor. Living was wife Judy, and an only son, William. There appears to be two Williams born about the same time that is causing many problems for genealogists. Complicating matters even more is that both lived in Flushing about the same time and both married women with the first name of Mary. One is the son of Joseph Fowler and Sarah Betts. This William married Mary Thorne. The other is the son of Henry Fowler and Rebecca Newell (or Foote). He married Mary Drake. The first William's wife is still living when he died in 1714. The second William, however, left Flushing, probably after Mary's death and his remarriage to Judith Southard, about 1705 and died in East Chester in 1712. Child of William Fowler and Mary Drake is: 41 i. Willam6 Fowler, Jr., born 1687. 20. George5 Fowler (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1662 in Providence Co., RI. He married Abigail Southard October 07, 1690. Notes for George Fowler: Born in Providence, 1662; settled at Hempstead, Long Island in 1685, where he married Abigail, daughter of John Southard, Sr., of Hempstead. Oct. 7, 1690, he gave a receipt to his brother-in-laws, Thomas and John Southard, as executors of their father's will, for his wife's share in her father's estate (Hem. Town Rec., Vol.2, p. 163]. July 11, 1691, his name is on a petition requesting Dr. John Steward to settle in Hempstead and practice surgery (ditto, p. 111). March 17, 1692, receipt from Robert Williams to George Fowler for 3 bushels of wheat, 3 of oats and 6 shillings in money for settlement of a debt. He was executor of the will of his brother William Fowler, of East Chester, in 1712. Children of George Fowler and Abigail Southard are: 42 i. George6 Fowler. 43 ii. Jacob Fowler. 44 iii. Silvanus Fowler. 45 iv. William Fowler. 21. John5 Fowler (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1663 in Providence, Providence Co., RI. He married Rose Burton Bef. 1700, daughter of William Burton and Hannah Wickes. She was born Abt. 1673 in Providence, Providence Co., RI. Notes for John Fowler: This John may be the father of Benjamin Fowler who married Miriam Wright or Alice Steward, or both. The only children we know for sure that belong to this couple are John and Hannah (as shown by the Chesterfield Friends Records, NJ Col. Documents, vol. XXII). Christine C. Fowler's, History of the Fowlers, published in 1950, provides details of a family from Providence, RI, who went to what is now the area of Burlington and Monmouth Counties, NJ. This from pg. 32-33: John Fowler, son of Henry Fowler and his wife Rebecca Newell, was born .... at Providence, and died ___, at ____. He married ______, Rose Burton, daughter of William Burton of Mashantank in Providence, before 1703. In 1690 John Fowler of Providence was deeded land in Providence by his brother William Fowler of Flushing. In 1691 John Fowler of New York deeded William Randall (his sister Rebecca's husband), land in Providence which had belonged to his father Henry Fowler in 1687; excepting a tract of land which his father had given by deed of gift to his daughter Newell Fowler and a deed of gift to "my brother William Fowler now of Flushing." In 1692-3, John Fowler of Providence purchased an eighth of a right to land on the west side of Panchassett River in Pautuxett; and in 1699, residing in Providence, he sold land in Pautuxett. John Fowler witnessed a deed in Providence in 1695 and was recorded as a scout there in 1698. Added to in January 1937 Record page 19--- (NYB&G), he was still living in Providence in 1699. The date of his moving to New Jersey has not been ascertained, but with wife Rose Fowler and (sons?) Jonathan and Francis Fowler, he was listed as a member of the Baptist Church at Middletown with other "members in the county of Monmouth and placed adjacent in East New Jersey," in 1731-35 (Silwell's Gen. Misc. II, 258). Despite this Baptist identification from the Fowler citation, this family had ties to the Society of Friends (Quakers) as can be seen from the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting records that bear reference to two of John and Rose's children, Hannah and John, Jr. Additionally, many researchers seem to suggest that John died in 1720 in New York State. If the above information is true, however, John was still living in 1735. As well, a land transfer deed from John to Benjamin Fowler, father and son, may indicates that this John was still living in 1753, making him about 90 years old. The original transaction of this land from Anthony Woodward to John Fowler was in 1700, so it seems very likely that the John in reference is this John Fowler. This land may have been purchased in preparation of moving his family from Rhode Island to West Jersey. Children of John Fowler and Rose Burton are: 46 i. Francis6 Fowler. Notes for Francis Fowler: Possible son, based on being listed with John and Rose in the Baptist Church in Middleton. 47 ii. Jonathan Fowler. Notes for Jonathan Fowler: Possible son, based on being listed with John and Rose in the Baptist Church in Middleton. 48 iii. Hannah Fowler, born Abt. 1700. She married Thomas Scholey, Jr. May 26, 1720 in Chesterfield MM, Burlington Co., NJ; born Abt. 1688. Notes for Hannah Fowler: Hannah, b._____ probably at Providence; was of Monmouth Co., NY [sic, i.e., NJ], "dau. of John and Rose" when she was m. on the 26th of the 3rd mo., 1720, in the Chesterfield NJ Meeting House to Thomas Scholey, Jr. of Burlington Co., NJ. The witnesses were John Fowler (her father), William Fowler (?), Francis Fowler (?), John Fowler, Jr. (her brother), Jeremiah Fowler (?), Thomas Scholey, Sarah Scholey, William Scholey and Elizabeth Scholey and others (pg. 667; note, if as some suggest, Benjamin was her brother, he was too young to be a witness at her marriage in 1720 which would fit the above analysis concerning Miriam Wright and Alice Steward. Why, however, would his birth be absent from the Quaker records of the same time period?). 49 iv. John Fowler, born Bet. 1701 - 1706; died Bef. September 08, 1731 in New Hanover, Burlington Co., NJ. He married Elizabeth Steward; born Abt. 1706; died 1756 in Chesterfield MM, Burlington Co., NJ. Notes for John Fowler: John, Jr., was probably b. at Providence, R. I., and he d. at New Hanover, Burlington Co., NJ before Sept. 8, 1731 when Letters of Adm. were granted his widow Elizabeth Fowler (1st Series, NJ Col. Docs. Vol. XXX, p. 186). Elizabeth (-------) Fowler was m. in Chesterfield ("of Hanover") on the 26th of the 12th mo., 1740, to Joseph Reckless of Chesterfield. Wit.: Benjamin Fowler, Joseph Fowler, Hannah Fowler and Miriam Fowler (NJ Col. Doc., Vol. XXII, p. 666; note, here both Benjamin and Miriam are mentioned, but in separate locations). Then follows details on three children, Elizabeth, Hannah and Joseph. From a query on the Burlington Rootsweb list: The Fowler family (at least a branch of it) were members of Chesterfield MM. John Fowler married Elizabeth Steward, b. 1706, dau of Joseph Steward 1664-1715 by Alice Wright 1673-1761. John/Elizabeth had Hannah, Joseph, & Elizabeth. Elizabeth Steward [Fowler], widow, married 1741 Joseph Reckless Sr. d. 1756, at Chesterfield MM. Joseph was previously married to Margaret Satterthwaite, d. 1739. 50 v. Benjamin Fowler, born Abt. 1713 in Pos Monmouth Co., NJ. He married (1) Miriam Wright Abt. December 29, 1736 in Monmouth Co., NJ; born Abt. 1717 in Burlington Co., NJ. He married (2) Alice Steward Abt. February 19, 1750/51 in Monmouth Co., NJ; born 1723. Notes for Benjamin Fowler: Records in New Jersey concerning Benjamin Fowler: Account for the estate of Joseph Steward of New Hanover, Burlington Co., NJ, dated Aug. 29, 1737, 4 years after the will and inventory, included a payment of debt to Benjamin Fowler (New Jersey Archives v. 34, pg. 188). Based on this data, I place Benjamin's birth at about 1713, making him 20 when the debt was incurred. Will of James Lawrie, dated Aug. 30, 1740, Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., had Benjamin Fowler as a witness. Will also has reference to the Quaker Meeting House (NJ Archives v. 30, pg. 292). Inventory of James Danford of Nottingham, Burlington Co., NJ: Lib. 6, pg. 78. 1749. April 1. Inventory at Bordentown. £; made by Peter Imlay and Philip Marot; includes note of Wm Danford and debts due by Ebenezer Robinson, Sam'l Danford, Jos. Steward, Wm. Wood, Ben Fowler, Sam'l Farnsworth, Edw'd Black, Jos. Borden Jos. Wood, Sen'r Sam'l Rogers, Wm. Rush, John Bunting, John Steward. In, 18th Century Freeholders in Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ, p. 66, a Benjamin Fowler is in both the 1748 and also the 1755 listings. A deed recording the sale of land by John Fowler to his son Benjamin Fowler on 29 Nov 1753 in Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ. John Fowler bought this land from Anthony Woodward in 1700. It doesn't seem likely that another John Fowler would be in this area in 1700, though there is documentation to show that John Fowler was still in Providence in 1699. I believe the strength of this deed points to our Benjamin being the son of John and Rose. The above data, if concerning our Benjamin, would suggest that the information in Charles E. Fowler's book is not correct concerning Benjamin. Dates for Alice Steward birth seem to range from 1717-1725. Putting his age to that of Alice would make him ca 100 at death if his death date according to C. E. Fowler of 1820 is true. An older Benjamin and Ales would, however, account for only two children since she could have been around 40 when James was born (though there may have been two other children for which we have no records; Thomas and Samuel). Again, based on C. E. Fowler, he and wife Alice (or "Ales") are believed to have moved from New Jersey to Pipe Creek, Frederick Co., MD (now Carrol Co.). There are, however, no records to date to prove this (note, the Pipe Creek record under James documents that his family moved to Pipe Creek, MD ca. 1791). They had children John, b. ca. 1754, and James, b. May 9, 1758 (one researcher, Gale Roberts, states that Benjamin [b. ca 1719] and Alice [Steward, b. ca 1723] had a son named Thomas born ca. 1754, though with the name Thomas, he may actually be Miriam's son; see Ken Rockwell's web page for a different analysis to the above). Notes for Miriam Wright: I have estimated the birth year based on the marriage date. she may have been younger or older; say between 1715-1720. Based on Larry Wright's book, she married (1st wife) (license December 29, 1736 - Documents, Colonial History of the State of New Jersey, vol. xxii, Marriage Records 1665-1800) to Benjamin Fowler, son of John and Rose (Burton) Fowler of Monmouth County, NJ. He was married 2nd to Alice Steward, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bullock) Steward. Notes for Alice Steward: This Inventory record could be for this Alice Fowler. Inventory of Estate of Alice Fowler dated 12 Dec 1808: Purse $652, apparrel 5.50, two bedquilts 2.50, one brass kettle 1.10, one iron pot 0.50, old silver 0.50, two tubs and one pale 0.75. by Nathan Middleton and Thomas Lippincott. A Samuel Fowler was appointed administrator 5 Aug 1808. On 14 Feb 1809 John Fowler and Samuel Fowler (different Samuel Fowler?) were given fifty days to file for exceptions. Account dated 7 Nov 1809 listed amounts only. A grave for Alice Fowler is at Union Bridge, Pipe Creek Friends Cemetery - no date, unfortunately. This may either be this Ales or, more likely, James' daughter who is said to have died young. 22. James5 Fowler (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1664 in Providence Co., RI. He married Mary Briggs 1704. Children of James Fowler and Mary Briggs are: 51 i. James6 Fowler, born Abt. 1705. 52 ii. John Fowler, born Abt. 1707. 53 iii. Thomas Fowler, born May 18, 1708. 54 iv. Samuel Fowler, born April 13, 1710. 28. Jeremiah5 Fowler (Henry4, Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1671 in Providence Co., RI, and died December 1723. He married Elizabeth Drake Abt. 1691. She was born Abt. 1671 in NY. Children of Jeremiah Fowler and Elizabeth Drake are: 55 i. Abigail6 Fowler. 56 ii. Mary Fowler. 57 iii. Joseph Fowler. 58 iv. Jonathan Fowler. 59 v. Jeremiah Fowler, Jr.. 60 vi. Samuel Fowler. 61 vii. Abraham Fowler.

    3. Not sure if any of you have seen Wharton Dickinson's work or not, but here is some of it. I have not verified any of the data listed here. I believe my connection is through John Fowler (21), son of Henry III Fowler and Rebecca Newell or Foote. Though I can show that Benjamin is the son of John, I have not been able to prove that it is this John yet without question. I will send this in two parts. Descendants of Thomas Fowler Generation No. 1 1. Thomas1 Fowler was born Abt. 1530 in Eng. He married Sarah Kevington Abt. 1559. She was born Abt. 1535 in Eng. Notes for Thomas Fowler: This information is based, except for John Fowler son of Henry and Rebecca (Newell) Fowler and a few additional comments here and there, on research done by Wharton Dickinson in Genealogy of the FOWLERS in England and America. He goes back several more generations, but I have not incorporated those generations into my database. Children of Thomas Fowler and Sarah Kevington are: + 2 i. Henry2 Fowler I, born Bef. 1560 in Eng. 3 ii. Thomas Fowler, Jr., born Abt. 1562. + 4 iii. Robert Fowler, born Abt. 1566. + 5 iv. William Fowler, born Abt. 1567. Generation No. 2 2. Henry2 Fowler I (Thomas1) was born Bef. 1560 in Eng. He married Annis Knight Abt. 1580 in Eng. She was born Abt. 1562 in Eng. Children of Henry Fowler and Annis Knight are: + 6 i. Henry3 Fowler II, born Bef. 1581 in Eng. 7 ii. Roger Fowler, born Abt. 1583. 8 iii. John Fowler, born Abt. 1585. 9 iv. Susan Fowler, born Abt. 1587. She married John Jackstown. 10 v. Anne Fowler, born Abt. 1589. 4. Robert2 Fowler (Thomas1) was born Abt. 1566. He married Elizabeth Darby. Child of Robert Fowler and Elizabeth Darby is: 11 i. Richard3 Fowler. 5. William2 Fowler (Thomas1) was born Abt. 1567. He married Sarah Walker. Children of William Fowler and Sarah Walker are: 12 i. Theodore3 Fowler. 13 ii. John Fowler. 14 iii. Samuel Fowler. 15 iv. Sarah Fowler. Generation No. 3 6. Henry3 Fowler II (Henry2, Thomas1) was born Bef. 1581 in Eng. He married Unknown. Child of Henry Fowler and Unknown is: + 16 i. Henry4 Fowler III, born Abt. 1632 in Hambleton, Co. Rutland, Eng; died 1704 in NY. Generation No. 4 16. Henry4 Fowler III (Henry3, Henry2, Thomas1) was born Abt. 1632 in Hambleton, Co. Rutland, Eng, and died 1704 in NY. He married Rebecca Newell June 04, 1655 in Providence, Providence Co., RI, daughter of Abraham Newell and Frances -----. She was born July 15, 1637 in Roxbury, Essex Co., MA. Notes for Henry Fowler III: Henry Fowler b. 1632 according to Visitation of Rutland, but in 1634 according to his sworn statement in 1655. He journeyed from London, England to Roxbury, MA about 1652 or 1653. He came with Joshua Foote, "Ironmonger and citizen of London," and subsequently accompanied Foote to Providence in January 1654. At that time, he purchased 60 acres of upland and a share of meadow from Joshua Winsor, and 58 acres from Valentine Whiton. He married at Foote's house in June 1655, Rebecca, daughter of his master (so should his wife's last name be Foote?). He was rebuked by Roger Williams for marrying without a license. He was an executor of his father-in-law's will in 1656. On June 4, 1655, he was chosen a juryman at the Providence town meeting. In 1656, he bought 253 acres of land from Richard Bullock. He sold land to William Arnold in 1658. In 1661, he and wife, Rebecca, sold 200 acres of upland at Providence. In 1665, he received a share in the division of lands at Providence. He appears to go to Fairfield, CT in 1665, and then, in 1666 to East Chester and is there until 1672, when he returned to Rhode Island. After the massacres in King Philip's War, 1676, he was one of the 38 who went to Long Island and received land at Musceta Cove in Oyster Bay (Rhode Island His. Mag., Vol. 6, p. 205). In 1678, however, he returned to East Chester, leaving his eldest son, William (if indeed William is his eldest son, then dates given for Henry and William are in error), at Flushing and his third son, George, at Hempstead. Henry was living at Mamaroneck as early as 1680. In that year, he entered into an agreement to build a sawmill there. He had purchased all rights of Jeremiah Caniff in the Mamaroneck Township, including house lot number one and a 15-acre piece of fresh meadow lying directly across the Sheldrake River from the house lot. The sawmill was located upon this fresh meadow tract. He called himself a "blacksmith," but was probably an "ironmonger" as was his friend, Joshua Foote. As such, he was a manufacturer of hardware. On March 17, 1683/4, he obtained another 92 acres of land at Providence. In 1684, he deeded 60 acres of land at Providence to his son-in-law, William Randall. He deeded land at Mamaroneck to his son William, still in Flushing, Sept. 19, 1687 (Liber A, p. 211, Wills). He was in Rhode Island in 1695 and again in 1698. He died intestate in 1704. He was one of the original patentees of Eastchester, Westchester Co., NY, however, he does not appear to have ever lived there. Here is some data that seems conflicts with information above. Henry is said to have sworn allegiance to King Charles II at Providence in 1666. In that same year, he and his wife sold 23 acres of land at Providence to John Brown. In 1671, he was chosen as one of the deputies to the General Assembly at Newport, RI. He received 74 acres and 37 acres, respectively, in the 1675 division of lands at Providence. Children of Henry Fowler and Rebecca Newell are: + 17 i. Rebecca5 Fowler, born Abt. 1656 in Providence Co., RI; died March 23, 1729/30. + 18 ii. Henry Fowler IV, born Abt. 1658 in Providence Co., RI. + 19 iii. William Fowler, born Abt. 1660 in Providence Co., RI; died February 1711/12 in East Chester, Westchester Co., NY. + 20 iv. George Fowler, born Abt. 1662 in Providence Co., RI. + 21 v. John Fowler, born Abt. 1663 in Providence, Providence Co., RI. + 22 vi. James Fowler, born Abt. 1664 in Providence Co., RI. 23 vii. Moses Fowler, born Abt. 1666. Notes for Moses Fowler: All that is known of him is that he was Town Clerk of East Chester from 1711 to 1723, and was the executor of his brother Henry's will. He probably died unmarried. 24 viii. Mary Fowler, born Abt. 1668 in Providence Co., RI. She married Richard Ward. 25 ix. Sarah Fowler, born Abt. 1667 in Providence Co., RI. She married (1) Samuel Goodwin. She married (2) Edward Hancock. 26 x. Newell Fowler, born Abt. 1668 in Providence Co., RI. Notes for Newell Fowler: She received from her father a tract of land in Providence by deed of gift. 27 xi. Grace Fowler, born Abt. 1670 in Providence Co., RI. She married John Hunt. + 28 xii. Jeremiah Fowler, born Abt. 1671 in Providence Co., RI; died December 1723.
