Connie, Thought you'd like to know that the "Greatness Without Fame" book information on Hilliard F. Fowler conflicts with yours. The author states that Hilliard Franklin Fowler, b. 21 Dec 1848, d. 21 July 1886, m. Alice Priscilla Hairston, was the son of Alfred Scott Fowler and Adaline Cobb. He also states that Alfred Scott Fowler was the son of Minty Fowler and Unknown Akin. His source for the information on Minty Fowler's descendants was a Mrs. Hilliard Franklin Fowler Gardner, court records and census information. Mrs. Gardner was still living when the book was written. As I said before, these are not my Fowlers and I have no idea which is correct. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. Judy
Hi Judy and all, The FOWLER line in "Greatness..." is my line also. With the help of many on this list and elsewhere, I have a good line from John to me. But has anybody found any solid sources for the parents of John? He seems to just appear and various researchers have differing opinions about his parents. And while I'm here, I'd like to apologize for the disappearance of my FOWLER website at metronet.com. That ISP went "off the air" without notice and I am reworking the webpages before I put them back up somewhere else. Cheers. ...Ken Fowler son of Abbie Leon FOWLER grandson of Frank Deforiest FOWLER g-grandson of Leon FOWLER gg-grandson of Hilliard Judge FOWLER (the other Hilliard, son of Joel) ggg-grandson of Joel Asbury FOWLER gggg-grandson of Drury Andrew FOWLER ggggg-grandson of Joel FOWLER gggggg-grandson of John FOWLER Looking for ggggggg-grandaddy On Wednesday, February 25, 2004 12:13 PM, JodieK444@aol.com [SMTP:JodieK444@aol.com] wrote: > Mickey and Connie, > I'm sure you both must have this book, but for those others who have Fowlers > from the Joel Fowler line in DeKalb County, GA and may not have heard of it, > there is a great book which gives a lot of detail on this family. Judy, Mickie, and Connie, I have some info on this Joel, Hillard and other Fowlers in DeKalb Co. GA in a file sent by another researcher that I can share if you get in touch with me personally at otime1@yahoo.com . Have Joel Fowler's will that mentions son Hilliard J. Fowler and he is the Hilliard born 1816. There is another Hilliard, grandson of Joel born about 1852 died 1936 in Walker Co. TX. See my website at bottom of this mail too for some of these Fowlers. It's called "Greatness Without Fame" and was written in 1967 by Loaz Whitfield Johnson and Maybeth Bowman Johnson of Salt Lake City. It covers the lines of Fowler, Johnson, Spriggs, Land, Story, Price, Hardeman and Bird, who relate to the Fowler and Johnson lines of DeKalb County. Unfortunately, I cannot connect my Fowlers of Gwinnett (Nathan) to these Fowlers of DeKalb, but my Nathan Fowler had a grandson named Joel and I was hoping there might be some connection. So far, zip. However, they (Johnsons, descendants of Solomon Johnson and Charlotte Marinda Fowler) do connect to my Blakes in Randolph County, AL. My Nathan Fowler of Gwinnett was born about 1800, supposedly in TN, and married Elizabeth Pepper(s), daughter of John Pepper(s) and Hester Whaley. Nathan's parents are still a mystery. Nathan first officially appears in Gwinnett in 1840 and remained in the Snellville, Grayson area all his life. he died about 1860 and is said to be buried in the Fowler-Gresham cemetery, but the cemetery has been paved over and made into a subdivision. His children were Hester, John (my ancestor), Reuben, Sarah, Kelly, Zephania(h), Elizabeth, Marion, Matilda and Martha Ann. Connie, the author doesn't mention your Hilliard F. as a son of Hilliard J. He only gives three children: (1)Joel M. Fowler, b. 29 Dec 1842 in DeKalb, d. 24 Mar 1884, married Vidora E. Unknown (2) Permelia C. Fowler, b. 25 June 1848 in Dekalb, d. 26 Aug 1905, bur. Wesley Chapel, married David Pinkney Chandler. (3) Mary Frances (Fanny) Fowler, b. 1854 in DeKalb, d. 1933, married William M. Francis The author states that Hilliard J. Fowler married Caroline Amanda Fowler, daughter of Minty Fowler and Unknown Akin. I'm sure that resources in 1967 were at a minimum and much more information is now available on this family. Mickey, the only Samuel mentioned in the book was a Samuel W. or C. Fowler, b. 1851 in Dade Co., GA, son of William W. Fowler (b. 1812) and his second wife, Mrs. Sophia Bomar. The author gives the location where William and Sophia obtained their marriage license in 1846 as Milton County, but I know for a fact there is also a marriage record in Campbell County for this couple. As you know, Milton and Campbell were both merged into Fulton. William Fowler, father of this Samuel, was the son of Joel Fowler of DeKalb and his first wife, name unknown. Hilliard J. is given as the son of Joel Fowler and his second wife, Sarah Unknown. The author also states that this Fowler family came from Laurens Co., SC. The parents of Joel Fowler are given as being John (b. abt 1740, d. bef 4 Jun 1791) and Molly Fowler of Laurens Co., SC. Joel Fowler's siblings are listed as Thomas Mitchell Fowler, Pricilla Fowler, Deborah Fowler, More or Moses Fowler, Tabitha Fowler, Jesse Fowler, James Fowler, and America Fowler. These name s were taken from John Fowler's will, written 20 July 1787 and probated 4 Jun 1791 in Laurens Co., SC. Hi, Mickey! Hope all is going well with you. Well, here goes. Pomp and Alice are buried in the Wesley Chapel cemetery behind the old church building. As for time frame, the information I have says that Hillard F. was born in 1848 and died in 1886. I do not have dates for Alice, but the information says that she was the daughter of Albert Miles and Nancy McLeod Hairston. Pomp's parents were Hilliard J. and Caroline Amanda Fowler Fowler (H. J. was the son of Joel Fowler and Caroline Amanda was the daughter of Minty Fowler). The Towers connection I mentioned in the earlier e-mail would be through Alice's parents (Hairston family). If there is any other information you would like and I have, I will be glad to share it with you. Until later, Connie 404-284-6314 > Connie, > Yes, I would like to know more. Connie, I'm researching my ggrandfather Ira R. (Richard, I think) Fowler (b. May 7, 1871, d. February 22, 1934) who married Juliette "Julia" Glass (b. August 3, 1969, d. June 14, 1935) in Jackson County, Florida on February 9, 1884. I'm not sure, but Ira may have come from Georgia and then moved to Florida. His marriage record has his last name as Touller, which was mistranscribed. By any chance do you think he's from your line of Fowlers? Mary Shiro
Hi, Thank you David for the response. In answer to your e-mail of Feb.18th, as to not having children for ten years after Solomon and Sarah FOWLER had Rachel, I neglected to mention that Edmund was the oldest son, and that three other daughters were born before Edmund. I think Edmund FOWLER was born a little before 1772,but only a guess, I find Edmund FOWLER in the 1800 Dutchess Co. census living by brother Richard FOWLER. They are listed as over 26 and under 45. Edmund FOWLER died in 1814. On the 1810 census Edmund was still listed in the same age range. Edmund FOWLER'S wife, Elizabeth ABRAMSE, was related to both the BARTOW and PELL families, her mother Ann ABRAMSE was the daughter of Theophilus BARTOW and Bathsheba PELL. I find these families in records relating to Solomon FOWLER. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Lynn

I realized it was the grandfather, but thought some might like to see the will. My question about the relationship would be regarding the dates. Rachel, daughter of Solomon and Sarah, would have been born before 1763 since she was named in the will. You mentioned that Edmund was the oldest child - Rachel having died - and that his birth was ca 1772. That would be a 10 year gap. Certainly not an impossible situation, but it seems strange that they had 7 more children after Rachel but waited 10 years to start having them (maybe I did not understand your statement, "her son Edmund the oldest." David By the way, Wharton Dickinson puts Edmund in the line of William Fowler of Flushing, NY, not Henry. His genealogy is: William>Henry>Edmund.
Hi, Thanks for the reply, if my Edmund Fowler is related to the Edmund Fowler that your talking about, It would have been his Grandfather. Which is why I think they may be related, but, it's just a guess right now. Thanks for the reply, Lynn
A Copy of Edmund's will - married to Rachel - can be found on Rootsweb board: U.S. States New York Counties Westchester Posted by Judith Ancell, April 2, 2001 I was able to pull it up by doing a SEARCH THE MESSAGE BOARDS "Edmund Fowler"
Hi, I've been watching the surname list for awhile and thought I'd give some information that may or may not be helpful. I am looking for an Edmund FOWLER, who married a Elizabeth ABRAMSE. I have been unable to place my Edmund, but found in the N.Y.G.&B. record an article on the descendants of Henry FOWLER. (April 1938 Vol 69 No.2. "by Theresa HALL BRISTOL") In this article it names the Son of Edmund Fowler and Rachel HUNT FOWLER as Solomon FOWLER. "76.Solomon FOWLER (Edmund,Henry,Henry)youngest son of Edmund FOWLER and Sarah HUNT, this is an error, and later they mention that Rachel FOWLER, made her will and devised to her son Solomon two-thirds of her estate. Solomon was born __ at Eastchester, and was killed in 1780 at Horseneck, when a member of a Loyalist company"attacking a party of" (American)"rebels". He was licensed to marry May 20, 1761, Sarah HUNT, sister to Thomas HUNT of Westchester. Solomon was under age when his father made his will in 1747.According to its terms the executors were to sell seven acres of land and the old mill and house north of the house and mills, the proceeds to be put to interest to furnish Solomon a school or collage and medical education. The house and mill and land were sold in 1747 to Ebenezer Burling;but Solomon FOWLER became a farmer, according to later deeds. On Jan.23,1761,Rachel Fowler made her will and devised to her son Solomon two thirds of her estate, including dwelling house, barn and orchard; he to pay each of his sisters Rachel Palmer, Hannah Butler, and Abigail FOWLER, 100 each, has an L in front, think it is pounds? In 1763,Solomon FOWLER, having then but one child (Rachel),made his will leaving his estate to his wife and child, and if Rachel should die, to his wife. He made his brother- in-law Thomas HUNT, executor. His widow Sarah FOWLER testified in Nova Scotia in 1786 that they had seven children born to them after the date of his will, and that Rachel had deceased. Without listing the whole article, Iam going to quote a part of the article that interest's me and wonder if anyone might help. I know I am grasping at straws, but after Solomon died, his wife Sarah, went with her son Edmund the oldest who had been in Damerary, when his father was killed, to Nova Scotia to try to get compensation for the property that was confiscated. He is listed to be about 14 or 15 and that would make is birth about 1772 which is the right age for my Edmund Fowler. I can't seem to tie him to any families in either Westchester or Dutchess Co. and hopefully someone can help me figure this out. My Edmund FOWLER and Elizabeth Abramse are listed in both the BARTOW genealogy and the AVERY Genealogy. If anyone would like me to type the whole article I will be happy to do it, but it might take me sometime, kinda slow. Thanks for everyone's time, Lynn

Deborah, I don't know who this Steven Fowler is but he got that info from my website. Of course that is OK as that is the reason it is there. Most of that work is from my sister and and things we have compiled in the last 30 years and some other cousins also contributed to it. Of course lots came from HOF book by Grover P. Fowler too. I gave the page numbers on the website too for sources. I have updated my website since it was copied by Steven so you can get much more from it. Check it out at the bottom of this mail in my signature line. Keep check on it often as I update my website often as I find new info. When the first colonist sought a site for a settlement in the vicinity in 1607, they found an Indian town near the mouth of the Appomatox, present site of Petersburg, and nearby was the village of Matoax, home of Pocahontus, one of Virginia's most romantic figures. Fort Henry was built by Governor Berkley in 1646, and many exploring expeditions went out from this frontier post. The nearby Indian trading post called Peters Point, established by Major Peter Jones, later grew into the present city of Petersburg. John Fowler settled just across the Appomattox from Fort Henry and there laid the foundation in America for the House of Fowler. John Fowler was no doubt a member of the Society of Friends before he came to America and perhaps he knew George Fox, the Puritan silk weaver who, at the age of 25 established the Society of Friends, who later came to be known as "Quakers." George Fox visited John Fowler's home on a visit to America in 1672, and it was from the vicinity in which John Fowler lived that so many of the members of that faith went forth to establish the Society of Friends in other sections. Godfrey Fowler, youngest son of John Fowler, was also a Quaker and was prominent in their councils. (4) 1. Richard Gildart Fowler (deceased).
