I have a picture of my great grandmother, a Fowler who originally lived in MO, I am told. On the back of the picture is written Edward Fowler. This family moved to Venice, IL after some sort of a tragedy that my grandfather wouldn't talk about. He was Frank Earl Fowler but went by Jack, he had a brother Ronald and sisters named Helen and Ina. He was born about 1893 and his brother and sisters were all born by about 1913 at the latest. I don't have much more other than the fact that Frank was married more than once and the other wives and ex-wives didn't seem to know about each other. Frank left my grandmother for the last time about 1938 in Centralia, IL where her parents lived. Any body have anyone with a Edward, Frank, Jack, Leigh, Helen, and Ina connection from this time frame? Hey Dave, [snip] > There is another Hilliard, grandson of Joel born about 1852 died 1936 in Walker Co. TX. [snip] Based on your mention of "died 1936", I believe you are refering to my gg-grandaddy. I know of three Hilliard Fowlers in Georgia in the 1800s. 1. Dr. Hilliard Judge Fowler (b: 11 Dec 1816 Laurens Co., SC d: 25 Oct 1891 DeKalb Co, GA) Dr. Fowler is the son of Joel Fowler (b:ca 1780 Laurens Co., SC d:26 Dec 1853 DeKalb Co, GA) 2. Hilliard Judge Fowler (b:24 Oct 1844 Walker Co., GA d:28 Apr 1936 Bristol, Ellis Co., TX) Hilliard is the great-grandson of Joel Fowler (1780) and grand-nephew of Dr. Fowler (1816). He is also my gg-grandaddy and I have personal knowledge that he is buried in Bristol in Ellis County. 3. Hilliard Franklin Fowler (b: 21 Dec 1848 DeKalb Co, GA d:?,?) I thought Hilliard F. was related to the other two Hilliards through Joel (1780), but after seeing another message about info in "Greatness Without Fame", I need to re-examine my data on Hilliard F. Additional Info on one line of Fowlers descended from John Fowler of Laurens Co, SC is available from my website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~klfowler/index.html Cheers... Ken Fowler
Thanks for your response. I'm still working to get a Fowler into DAR Patriot's List. I believe one of the Richards (mostly Jr.) who lived part of his life in the Granville County, NC areas - would be in the time-frame. Fran Higgins
This is to AncestrySpirit@aol.com, Please contact me personally at otime1@yahoo.com The files that you posted came directly from my website but it is way out of date. Most of that work was mine and my sisters but we got a lot from the book HOUSE OF FOWLER by Grover P. Fowler and many other sources. It is a compilation of about 30 years of research. Of course many others have found info and we tried to give credit to the folks that we got it from. Go to my website and get my updated files. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=otime I usually update it weekly as I find new stuff. BTW, who is this Steven Fowler you mention as he must be using my old files too? When our Fowler family in Spartanburg got in touch with the County Sheriff, the County Commissioners, the County Attorney, the State Attorney General, the Governor etc. - they did nothing although the law for destruction of graves is severe and on the books in SC. The state ombudsman called me and asked how OLD the graves were. I said they went back to the late 1700's. He said, "Well, now, you know there are no remains left there now" Like THAT made a difference! It took legal action by our cousin Ken Smith and others a couple of years and finally the guy decided to sell the property (where he had destroyed our Fowler graves). So, our cousins and their lawyer got an injunction that he could not sell until he settled this lawsuit. Then and only then did he settle out of court and we got money from him to restore the graves, place the tombstones back and replace the ones that had been broken by his crew. A fence was placed around it with gravel inside with the money he had to cough up - plus our lawyer got a chunk of the money as well. We have to thank our cousins in Spartanburg for their work on this and not giving up when things got rough!! It seems it took about 3 years. Marian Bryan
Vickie, do you know any laws concerning cemeteries in Iowa? The Iowa Department of Transportation has built a highway across a cemetery access road leaving no way to get to the cemetery. I thought that was against federal law, any ideas? Connie, I think someone needs to contact the Sherriff in that county since someone has removed or destroyed the graves. GA has passed laws to protect the cemeterys in GA and the fines are pretty stiff. Whoever removed the stones can be made to fix the cemetery back like it was. Also whoever descends from those folks in the cemetery actually owns the cemetery and there has to be access to it. Of course you probably already know this??? DAVE To: FOWLER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FOWLER] Hilliard F. Fowler Hi, Judy! Thanks for the information. This certainly clears up alot, and it gives another family tie to Minty Fowler. Now, if I can just find out who Minty Fowler's father was. Also, the DeKalb County 1850 Census backs up the book's information re Hilliard F. Fowler. Now for the reason I originally e-mailed the request for descendants of Hilliard F. and Alice Priscilla Hairston Fowler. Alice Priscilla was a descendant of Isaac Towers, Jr.; the Isaac Towers family cemetery has had a couple of residential back fences built on part of it. Also, someone took some of the tombstones and arranged them somehow in her back yard. One of the DeKalb History Center's cemetery experts mentioned that a wall was made out of the tombstones. At present, there is no access to the cemetery. A lady pastor lives on/owns land on which she built a church. The church/residential land is enclosed by a gate. I am currently trying to work with the DeKalb History Center to firmly establish that as the Isaac Towers Cemetery. The DeKalb Planning Department is going to visit the location; they have the land lots plotted and have documentation of the location of that which they have listed as the Isaac Towers cemetery. If anyone in this group is a descendant/relative or knows of a descendant, please e-mail me at conelizhe@comcast.net; it probably would be better to pursue this matter further privately. Thanks again for your help. Connie Decatur, GA DeKalb County Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - More reliable, more storage, less spam
