He was born in Alabama in 1819. Married twice that I know of. I suspect he may have been married one other time looking at the dates. He married (2)? Sarah Clifton born in Tennessee. They had 6 known children: Sarah Elizabeth, James Knox Polk, M. E. (daughter), Tennessee C. Eliza J and maybe, Eli Calvin, Jr. Children's ages run from 1842 to 1860. Sarah died (or disappears) before 1878 in Hopkins County, Kentucky, where Eli married (3)? Mrs. Phoebe C. Hawkins. On the 1880 Census she is listed as Phily or Shely. (Looks more like Phily to me but the index has it has Shely). She was born in 1833 in Kentucky.. Does anyone know anything about these people? Who were Eli's parents? I will be happy to share anything I have. Virginia in Seattle
Folks. Looking for information on the family of Alexander FOWLER who married Mrs. Almeda (McGowan) Wilkins on Jan. 11, 1881 in Gallatin Co., IL. If this data is correct, interesting, because in the 1880 Census of neighboring White County, Illinois is the family of : Alexander FOWLER, 35, Laborer, IL/TN/TN; Almada FOWLER, 25, Wife, IL/TN/TN George F. FOWLER, 12, Son, IL/IL/IL Samuel W. FOWLER, 3, Son, IL/IL/IL Almada (or Almeda) McGowan, was the daughter of Wiley and Tabitha (Norris) McGowan. Wiley was born ca. 1803 in Hyde Co., NC, moved with family members to White Co., Tennessee where he married Tabitha. By 1857, Wiley moved his family to Saline Co., Illinois and several of his daughters married White County, Illinois men. As you can see from the census, Alexander Fowler's parents were also from Tennessee. I would greatly appreciate any information on Alexander and Almeda Fowler and their descendants. Thanks, John McGowan jmack@carolina.net

This list has been showing lots of interest, will try posting additional information on my John Fowler b 1740, Scotland. Does anyone have any connections to the Scotland branch of Fowler who sailed to New England prior to the Revolution. I am a member of Daughters of American Revolution, I joined on John's documented Rev. War record....he married Ann Eliza Keith. They lived Albany NY per his records. Have no idea if they were married prior to his coming to this country or after his arrival. Is anyone familiar with the Keith surname? The male (in my lineage) names are John, William and Alexander. Not imaginative with names in those days, makes searching quite an adventure. Am also connected with the Harris, Howey, Newton, Tozer, Meigs, Hubbell, Wyatt lines in New England. Appreciative of this site. Viola in CA
I have a William Thomas Fowler who was born in Hopkins Co. KY on 11-17-1844 (died: 09-28-1903 in Salt Lake City, Utah) who married Nancy Estes ( Jackeon Estes x Susan W. Corum<Wm. C. & Barsheba Alice (Bloyd) Corum>) Wm T. Fowler son of Thomas T. Fowler born 07-20-1815 in Granville, NC and died 09-15-1885 in Madisonville-Hanson, KY - Hopkins County. Thomas T. married Jane Jones who died 02-09-1861 in Hansen, KY - Hopkins County. Thomas T, Fowler was the son of John Fowler of Granville, NC - near the Tar River- who married Bethiah Tippett on January 23, 1811. I am trying to locate any words written that shows John Fowler being the son of Richard Fowler of Granville, NC and this Richard may have floated to S.C as well. This Richard was/is a mystery. He may have fought in the Am. Rev. War??? He was the son of Richard Fowler who was the son of Mark to Godfrey to the original John Fowler from England to Virginia. John and Godfrey were said to be Quakers. Any "Richard" information in VA-NC-SC who had a farm on the Tar River area of Granville County in North Carolina. Thanks: Fran DLPUB@EROLS.COM
Hello to all, It is nice to see the list active again, Thank you Sharon for taking over the list, I hope that someone can help with my research problem. I am very excited for the people that are connecting up on this site I hope that they find a match. 1920 Census, Lists CORNELL A. FOWLER , Living with his cousin Elijah ARNOLD. Cornell was sent to Moravia NY to live with his cousin at the age of 8, being seperated from a brother named Frederick Fowler who I believe is 5-6yrs of age. Proof of residence is the 1920 census and a school report card, no parents names listed. LORE; Cornell said that he was born in Utica, NY, but the census says he was born in NJ. Proof: that this cornell is my father, he brought my older syblings to Moravia NY and said this is where he lived when he was a child. But always said that he was born in Utica. There are no records in Utica, NY, or Albany NY. 1910 Census, I found a FREDERICK & HANNAH FOWLER w/ two children 1. Son, Cornelius age 2 born in NJ 2. Son, Frederick age 5/12 born in NJ I would love to believe that this is my fathers family, but am afraid too without exact proof, which I can't prove. Another interesting thing I found in NJ was a male named CORNELL FOWLER AGE 51 who lived in the same ward as the Frederick listed above. It would be nice to think that this was the father to Frederick Fowler. I am hoping to find the other family that took Frederick Fowler jr. 1909. I would like some feed back on to your thoughts of my progress and maybe advice on something that I overlooked. My next step is to delve into the NY 1900 1890 census for NYC area. Anne/NC
Thanks Jim, I posted what else I know of my FOWLER line on the list. I know that there were alot of FOWLERS in Alabama and that many of them are connected somehow, but haven't been able to build that bridge. Any thing you find out would by very appreciated! Keep on the Sunny Side..........Rea
Hi Dave, Happy to see this list so active! All the more that I know about my FOWLER (John FOWLER from SC and his wife Racheal from AL) line is that John's and Racheal's daughter SARAH FOWLER married a JOHN WILSON who was living in Cooke Co. TX, just kitty corner from Wise C. TX. That was about 1882 or 83. Then they moved across the state line into Chickasaw, IT, then Pickens Co. now Carter Co. They has several children while in IT. Then in 1900 they rode a wagon train out to Tacoma, WA. for a brief stay, before moving out to Washington Co. Idaho, where my Grandmother was born (Melva Paradis) and lived out thier lives there. By the way I didn't see that website you mentioned, would love to take a looksie......Rea

Kuzzins, After reading all the Fowler connections in todays mail it seems like it came from my kin as many were in SC and surrounding areas. I got much of my info from HOUSE OF FOWLER by Grover Parsons Fowler and have page # listed where it applies. Also lots came from ANNALS OF THE FOWLER FAMILY by Glenn Dora Fowler Arthur. Of course there are errors in those books too but most is pretty accurate. Most of the info is on my website [below] including all the research I have done and much I got from you cousins too. I may have errors so please let me know if you find some. You may have some additions too. David S. I am looking for info on the Fowlers of NJ. I have an Ellen C. Fowler who married John Densten about 1846 or so in Deptford Twp,Gloucester County,NJ. I believe her father was named Jacob but have no proof of this. She died in Woodbury,NJ in 1917. Any info would be helpful. Sandy
With the list so active, I guess it's time to toss out my Fowlers again, although some are probably getting weary of hearing about them. We are at a dead end and have been for years. Seeking ancestry of Nathan Fowler, b. abt 1800, supposedly in TN (as recorded in the 1850 census), although all my family stories say our Fowlers came from the Carolinas. By the 1830s, Nathan was in Gwinnett County, GA, married to Elizabeth Pepper(s), daughter of John Pepper(s) and Hester Whaley. Nathan and Elizabeth had 10 children: 1. Hester Fowler, b. 15 Nov 1824, d. 28 Sep 1898. Married (1) Edward Gresham, (2) James Johnson. First marriage proved with census records, second marriage proved with court documents (estate settlement of grandfather). Hester and James are buried in the Johnson Cemetery, Gwinnett Co., GA. Do not know what happened to Edward Gresham, but Hester was married to James by 1869. James thought to be the son of Joel Johnson and Matilda Williams, and the grandson of Noel Johnson and Temperance (Tempy) Stamps. This is recent new information. 2. John Fowler (my ancestor), b. abt 1826, d. abt 1877, supposedly buried in Shadnor Baptist Church Cemetery, Union City, Fulton Co., GA (formerly Campbell Co., ). John has been seen as John O., and John O.W. Fowler. Grandson was named Oscar. That may be the "O." Son named George Wilson Fowler. That may be the "W." John married Sarah Ann Norris in 1847, daughter of John "Jethro" Norris and Mary Johnson. (This Mary Johnson thought to be the daughter of Noel Johnson and Tempy Stamps). After John's death, Sarah and all her children moved from Campbell Co., GA to Cleburne Co., AL. My ancestor is their son, William Jethro Fowler, b. 1849 in Gwinnett. 3. Reuben Fowler, b. abt 1827, d. 1889, buried Appalachee Baptist Church Cemetery. Married Frances Ann Johnson abt 1848. Frances Ann (Fanny) thought to be the daughter of John and Sarah (Sally) Johnson, and the granddaughter of Noel Johnson and Temperance (Tempy) Stamps. Most descendants remained in the Gwinnett area. 4. Sarah Fowler, b. abt 1829. Married William Rice, according to estate papers of grandfather. No further info after 1869 when she and her husband signed the estate settlement papers of her grandfather, John Pepper(s). 5. Kelly Fowler, b. abt 1831, d. 8 May, 1863 in Montgomery, AL. Civil War casualty. Married Sarah Perry 14 Sep 1853 in Gwinnett Co. Sarah and her three daughters moved to Athens, Clarke Co., GA, where they worked in the cotton mills. 6. Zephania(h) Fowler, b. abt 1833, d. 10 March 1863 in Fairfield, TN. Another Civil War casualty. Zeph married Lucy Ann Norris, sister of Sarah Ann Norris, above, and moved to Fayette Co., GA. After Zeph's death, Lucy remarried Green B. McFalls and lived in Campbell and Douglas counties, GA. Most descendants remained in the Fayette/Campbell area. 7. Martha Ann Fowler, b. abt 1834, married Henry Littleton Kimbrell. Moved to Randolph Co., AL, then back to GA. 8. Matilda Fowler, b. abt 1837. Last seen in 1850 census. Not named in estate papers of grandfather (late 1860s-early 1870s). May have died young. 9. Elizabeth Fowler, b. abt 1838, m. James Gresham/Grisham 20 Sep 1860 in Gwinnett. Last seen in 1880 Gwinnett census. 10. Marion Fowler (male), b. abt 1838. May be twin to Elizabeth. Last seen in 1850 census. Not named in estate papers of grandfather. May have died in Civil War also. Elizabeth Peppers Fowler died before 1858 when Nathan remarried Sarah Johnson, mother-in-law of his son, Reuben. Nathan died bef. 1860, and Sarah Johnson Fowler is back living with her daughter in 1870. Nathan and Elizabeth are said to be buried in the Fowler-Gresham cemetery which has been paved over. Gwinnett Courthouse burned in 1871 destroying most records of this family. I have much information on children and grandchildren, but nothing on Nathan's background. There were many Fowlers in Gwinnett the same time as Nathan and we feel they are most certainly connected or related. We just can't figure out how. Any help with Nathan's ancestry appreciated. Judy Fowler Kilgore Newnan, GA
With all the activity on Fowlers surely there is someone who info on my Mary Ann Fowler: Mary Ann Fowler, born 11-23-1815 TN died 7-24-1881 in Tarrant Co. Tx Married on 8-3-1833 in Hardeman Co,. Tn. to William E. Walker born 4-14-1808 Tn died 2-1-1882 inTarrant Co. Tx. Have all descendants but no parent or siblings.
Hello, Jessi. My most recent Fowler is Eliza Jane, who married Thomas Reeder in Lauderdale Co., AL. Her father was Thomas Fowler, b 1794 in Pickens District, SC. I'm pretty sure his father was Joshua, b 1755 in Pickens Distritct SC. Some of the Fowlers who left SC were in TN, but it was right across the line from Lauderdale Co., AL. As far as I know none of mine were in GA. What do you think? Charles MIddlebrooks
I would like to try posting my Fowler line, all right my Fowler dash (too short to be a line) in hopes that someone might be connected to help me along. My mother was Vivian Leigh Fowler born Oct. 23, 1933 in East St. Louis, IL. Her father was Frank "Jack" Earl Fowler who was most likely born in MO, although I don't know where he was born exactly, nor do I know when he was born, but my grandmother said he was 40 when they were married in 1933 in Carlyle, Clinton County, IL. So he was born somewhere around 1893, as I am not sure that she wasn't rounding his age off at 40 when she said it. He had been married before and had two daughters that my mother had been told about living in MO. My mother's middle name, Leigh, was supposedly a family name from the Fowler side, and her brother Frank was named after their father. Frank had a brother Ronald, and two sisters, Helen and Ina. Frank's father ran a boarding house in Venice. IL down by the river across from the gambling boats. I have a picture of Frank's mother that has the name Edward written beautifully on the back of it in faint pencil. My grandmother was told by Frank's sister that he had said that he had taken care of their divorce, and he married again. Eventually my grandmother did too. So I know that he was married at least three times, and I am not sure that he actually ever divorced my grandmother. Anybody out there with Fowlers connected to Clinton/Marion Co., IL , Venice, IL and MO? I could sure use a boost in finding a second piece of the puzzle. Thanks, Donna
One thing that I would really like to see, Sharon, is the name of the list on the messages as they come through. With so much junk mail floating around, I most often just delete mail unless I can accurately identify it. If I see FOWLER-L at the beginning of the subject line, I'll know I can safely read it. And thanks so much for taking over the list -- I wish you all the best. Pleased to see more activity on the FOWLER List. I would like to post my Fowler family in hopes someone will see some similarity in mine to theirs'. I have my family back to the birth of my Great Grandfather, Ezra Lonzo (Alonzo, Elonzo) Fowler, born in Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio in 1842. Ezra named his first son George Albert Fowler, bn 1868 in Chariton County, MO. My Fowler family used a naming pattern that would indicate my GGGrandfather Fowler had the given name of either George or Albert or both. Great Great Grandfather (George or Albert or both) was probably born in the time span of 1800 to 1810. On census records, Ezra states his father was from New York and in family verbal history, he is said to be of English ancestry. "George or Albert or both" married a lady, name unknown, who was "born at sea" coming from Scotland to America. I am reasonably sure that there were siblings in Ezra's family. Does anyone have a similar history in their Fowler family? If so, I would sure like to hear from you. Darline Fowler Smith
Hi "Cousin" I think I started to respond to your posting, and hit the send button before I said anything! My apologies to the list. I am descended from William Fowler, Jr. and Elizabeth Harbin Fowler through their daughter Harriett, who married William Wilson in Cherokee Co. GA. I have considerable descendant information from the Georgia research if you are interested. jmyers@gt.rr.com Jessi Pulliam Myers Groves, TX ----- Original Message ----- From: <RGWorkman@aol.com> To: <FOWLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2004 9:06 PM Subject: William Fowler, Pendleton Dist, SC 1790 cen > My Fowler ancestor goes back to William Fowler, listed in the first US census > as being in Pendleton District, SC.
