Author: mnburnett Surnames: Foust, Phelps Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.foust/760/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Over the past few months I have been trying to reconstruct the family of "Horace Phelps" of Carroll County.My line descends through his daughter Elizabeth Phelps who married Benjamin Vinson. Horace Phelps of Sullivan and Carroll Counties,Tennessee left very few records with his name on them. On the records that have been located to date, his name has been spelled several ways, Orrice, Orriss and Orice. On his daughter Elizabeth's Tennessee death certificate, her father's name is given as "Horris". On his son Joseph Newton Phelp's Tennessee death certificate, his name is given as "Horace". This is most likely his proper given name. Many researchers have linked him to an "Ozias Phelps" born 1 Sept 1801 in Connecticut. To date there is not a single piece of documented evidence to link "Ozias Phelps born 1 Sept 1801 in Connecitut" to "Orrice, Orriss Orice, Horris, Horace Phelps" of Sullivan and Carroll Counties,Tennessee. The problem with the spelling of his name in the Tennessee records appears to be a phonetic issue. Until solid evidence can be given to prove other wise, I will claim him as "Horace Phelps". Information on three of his daughters has been missing, Louisa Jane, Elmira and Amanda. They were presumed to have died young. I have proof that Louisa Jane and Elmira did not die young, they both married and had families,nothing has been found on Amanda.Louisa Jane stayed in Sullivan County, she married Absalom M.Bunn,they raised a large family. She died on 4 December 1888 at Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 48. Children of Elmira"Almira"1 Phelps and William C. Foust all born at Carroll County, Tennessee, were as follows: i.SARAH LOUISA2 was born circa 1861. She married J. P. Fields (--?--) on 26 April 1903 at Carroll County, Tennessee. She died on 26 December 1940 at Hollow Rock, Carroll County, Tennessee. ii.JOHN H. was born on 2 November 1863.He died on 2 October 1914 at Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 50. iii.ROBERT MARION was born on 20 February 1866.He married Etta Elizabeth Gooch on 29 November 1894 at Carroll County, Tennessee. He died on 2 March 1946 at Bruceton, Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 80. 2.iv.RICHARD R. was born on 8 September 1871. He married Enola L. Fields on 24 May 1891 at Carroll County, Tennessee. He died after 27 April 1910. v.JOSEPH IRA was born on 15 February 1875.He married Maggie Gooch on 10 December 1903 at Carroll County, Tennessee. He died on 22 February 1954 at Bruceton, Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 79. Generation Two 2. RICHARD R.2 FOUST (Elmira"Almira"1 Phelps) was born on 8 September 1871 at Carroll County, Tennessee. He married Enola L. Fields on 24 May 1891 at Carroll County, Tennessee.He died after 27 April 1910 at Carroll County, Tennessee. Children of Richard R.2 Foust and Enola L. Fields were as follows: i.OLIVER QUAY3 was born on 8 March 1892 at Hollow Rock, Carroll County, Tennessee.He died on 11 August 1942 at Rosser, Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 50. ii.QUINCY was born in July 1894 at Carroll County, Tennessee. iii.OLLIE was born in March 1897 at Carroll County, Tennessee. iv.EUPHA A. was born on 11 October 1900 at Carroll County, Tennessee.She married Jae D. Joyner on 4 April 1920 at Carroll County, Tennessee.She died on 13 April 1923 at Carroll County, Tennessee, at age 22. v.ALLEEN was born circa 1906 at Carroll County, Tennessee.
