Horace Phelps of Sullivan and Carroll Counties,Tennessee left very few records with his name on them. On the records that have been located to date, his name has been spelled several ways, Orrice, Orriss and Orice. On his daughter Elizabeth's Tennessee death certificate, her father's name is given as "Horris". On his son Joseph Newton Phelp's Tennessee death certificate, his name is given as "Horace". This is most likely his proper given name. Many researchers have linked him to an "Ozias Phelps" born 1 Sept 1801 in Connecticut. To date there is not a single piece of documented evidence to link "Ozias Phelps born 1 Sept 1801 in Connecitut" to "Orrice, Orriss Orice, Horris, Horace Phelps" of Sullivan and Carroll Counties,Tennessee. The problem with the spelling of his name in the Tennessee records appears to be a phonetic issue. Until solid evidence can be given to prove other wise, I will claim him as "Horace Phelps". Information on three of his daughters has been missing, Louisa Jane, Elmira and Amanda. They were presumed to have died young. I have proof that Louisa Jane and Elmira did not die young, they both married and had families,nothing has been found on Amanda.Louisa Jane stayed in Sullivan County, she married Absalom M.Bunn,they raised a large family.
