Hi, I saw your posts on Rootsweb regarding Thomas Charles Forsyth. I descend from James Forsyth and Hannah Lester out of New London Connecticut. They would be ancestors to Thomas C. Forsyth. Word is Thomas Charles Forsyth was a whaler and left New London on board a whaling ship. I checked dates for ships leaving at that time and we believe he was on one. It made a stop in the Philippines and then the Hawaiian islands. Interestingly, I had my DNA done on ancestry.com and they have a new analysis tool that shows familial pockets of DNA around he world. It literally shows areas of the world where our DNA is related. Well, it turns out my DNA is common to many on the Hawaiian islands which means I must have many cousins there born through the Forsyth lineage. One of John Jacob the thirds kids was Sarah, a paternal grandmother. I do have a request for Naturalization Citizenship form from a Jacob Forsythe Jr in 1848. It stated being born in Ireland. My 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Robert Forsyth was born there in 1813 and left for Ontario, Canada in 1820, joined the Mormon church and died in Utah in 1898. I have a couple of photos of him. He emigrated with his parents. His father was Thomas Forsyth (1782-1821) who also was born in Kelso. His father was James Forsyth (1756-1799) who was born in nearby Nenthorn and died in Kelso. My parents, sister and cousin have visited Kelso. Last year I asked my cousin to look for Forsyths in the Kelso graveyard but she only found a couple of 20th century Forsyth stones. He had 5 children (1st 4 born in Tyrone, Ireland) with Catherine McLane were: 1. Hugh (1837 - 20 Dec 1902) 2. Sarah (1841 - ?) 3. George (1844 - 09 Aug 1874) 4. James (1846 - 16 Oct 1891) (my 2nd great grandfather) 5. John (30 Sep 1851 - 28 Jul 1937) James Forsythe married Mary Burke. I could only find 9 children: 1. Francis Joseph (04 Jul 1867 - after 1910) 2. Mary (1869 - 1870) died at 10 months of age 3. John Thomas (1872 - 1909) married my great grandmother Mary Veronica Dougherty (1872 - 1969) 4. Catherine (1876 - 1886) died at 10 yrs of age from acute hepatitis 5. Charles Paul (1878 - 1919) died of TB at age of 40 6. Rose D (1801-1907) died at 25 of gangrenous empyema likely due to TB) 7. James (1882 - 1905) died at 22. 8. Hugh ( 1886 - 24 Dec 1905) died at 18 of fatal injury while trespassing on PA Railway 9. Mary (1890 - 1910?) John Thomas Forsythe (1872 -1909) who also was a Philadelphia Fireman died of typhoid fever. He became very ill after fighting a fire in sub-zero weather in January 1909 and died the next month. Because it did not occur on the job, his wife was denied his pension and the only job she could get was to clean the firehouse. John and Mary had 10 children together, and 5 died as babies. Seeking thoughts and ideas on the origins of John Ernest Forsyth born about 1862. John Ernest appeared on the scene when he married Annie Eliza on 15 June 1890 in St James the Great Bethnal Green. Very little is known about his life before then as he has only appeared in the 1901 census and had disappeared from home circa 1905-1906. He was declared deceased about 1912 when Annie Eliza married for a second time. His occupation is known to be a Merchant Seaman from his marriage certificate, the 1901 census, the birth of 5 children and from his Merchant Seaman Campaign Medal Record card. These represent the only tangible evidence that I have of him. No birth has been found yet as the 1901 census gave his place of birth as Wales N K (Not Known)and the Campaign Medal Record Card as New Zealand. He was not at home in the 1901 census. Family folk lore has it that he returned to New Zealand about 1905-1906; never to be seen again. Interestingly when Annie Eliza applied for his WW1 medals she was invited to apply to South Africa! No UK birth certificate has been found and as yet nothing from New Zealand. John Ernest's father is known to be Edward Forsyth from John Ernest's marriage cert. but nothing else is known about him. Could he have been an early New Zealand settler - no real evidence yet. Feedback most welcome. My tree is public on Ancestry. He is the father of my Great Grandmother, Grace Bell Forsythe born in Rarden, Scioto, Ohio 12 Feb 1886 and died 13 May 1956. I cannot locate Grace's birth certificate which may help identify her father. Grace's mother was Mary Angeline Alexander born in Dry Fork, Scioto, Ohio 16 Aug 1863 and died 3 Dec 1899. I cannot find a marriage certificate for Mary Alexander and Jacob Forsythe either (which would help). I do know that Mary Alexander married Samuel C. Hoop on 28 Jul 1887 (shortly after Grace was born) so I am thinking Grace was born out of wedlock, or they got divorced right after she was born, or perhaps Jacob Forstyhe passed away? I have found a John Jacob Forsythe in Rarden, Ohio but he was married to someone else and had children and I have no evidence to tie him. This isn't a lot to go off of, but any insight would be appreciated. I know many out there have access to specific surname or regional references that I do not have which has proven to be a huge help in the past. Sometimes a fresh perspective helps too. Thank you.
