Vicki This is quite interesting. It would appear that John Waltham age 24, Randall Revell 21 years and John Ford 25 years or thereabouts gave a sworn deposition that they heard Henry Charelton say that if he had Mr. Cotton outside the church yard he would have kicked his behind for calling him a black coated rascal. Upon the complaint of Mr. Cotton against the siad Charelton and the sworn deposition of the above. It was ordered that the said Charelton shall for the said offense be put into stocks and set in them for three consecuvtive Sundays in the time of Devine Service and then ask for Mr. Cottons forgiveness. My John Ford was born a little later than this, but in the same area, so this is quite interesting to me Thanks for sharing. Anyone from this list care to give a shot at translating some of the above dialog??? What the heck is Pallyzados???? I think black cotted raskoll is a racist slur Charelton used to insult Mr Cotton. At the age of 25 years old I believe that John Ford was respected in the community and had money because of the following abstracts........... [Original p.47.] Upon the petition of John Ford for the adventure of his father and mother and six persons more brought out of England upon his owne cost and charges desired a porportion of land to the syd adventure which upon examination it is ordered that the syd John Ford shall have 400 acres of land ........ I don't know what land was given and to whom because the abstract didn't list the names of his parents. Does anyone have any idea how to get that information? Anyone have any idea what passage for 8 people would have cost John Ford at this time 1635-1637?.......... [Original p.94.] Upon the complaint of Mr Wm'll Roper agt John ford for abusing the Constable in bending his fist and offering to strye him neere the church on the sabouth day which upon dew examination It is ordered that the said John Ford for the said offence byld a pare of stocks by the first of July next compleat and bring them to Mr Neales house syde and pay all charges ......the above abstract makes me believe that John Ford is respected in the community because when Mr. Charelton committed a similar offense he had to sit in the stocks for 3 Sundays. John Ford was ordered to build new stocks but not ordered to wear them........... [Original p.103. Abstract.] John Foorth [John Ford] was ordered by Court 1 May 1637 to build a pair of stocks by Mr Jno Neale's house. Having failed, he is fined 100 lb tobo and ord to build the stocks by the next Court, or else sit in those already made during the Commander's pleasure. [Original p.108. Abstract.] John Foorth [Jno,. Ford] having built the stocks according to Court order of 3 July 1637 is excused from fine. ............Looks like John took his time to build the stock, still never had to use them or pay any fine. Guess the old one needed replacement from over use. Anything that you may have to share on this John Ford would be appreciated.... Hey Eddie, Are you sure that cotted means coat? I was thinking 'black cotted raskoll' meant cot as in a cot like a bed. Still don't know what was meant by 'kicked him over the Pallyzados'. I'll have to look that one up. If you don't mind could you share with me whatever information that you have on your John Ford because I'm still searching for one born later and trying to keep others straight. It gets so confusing with so many Johns and Thomas also. Did your John have a son named Thomas Ford who married Rebecca Burton in Jan. 1794? I BELIEVE that this marriage produced a Thomas Jr. in Dec. of 94 who later married Elizabeth Dye. Do you know anything about these people? Thanks, Vicki in VA
