Having been out of town, I've just come in on the conversation about Fords from places other than the U.S. My major Ford mystery concerns James Wallace Ford, born about 1809. According to census and death records in the U.S., he was born in England, but I have no idea of where in England. He was married in Calton, Barony (now part of Glasgow), Lanarkshire, Scotland, to Rachel McKenzie 22 April 1833 (his occupation was given as Cotton Spinner). Although I have the birth records of all eleven of Rachel's siblings, after this marriage record I cannot find any record of these McKenzies or of James Ford and his family in the Barony/Glasgow area. The Fords came to the U.S. around 1848, and they appear in the 1850 U.S. (PA) census with five children, all born in Scotland (William 18, Archibald 16, James 15, Christiana [Christian/Christina] 10, and Mary 9). (The ages differ by as much as three years over several censuses.) Christina was my gggrandmother. I have material on the extended Ford family in the U.S. from 1850. The original family lived in New Jersey in 1860 but settled in the Philadelphia area. Archibald moved to Missouri and then California, where it is possible that William also settled. If anyone has come across a James Ford born around 1809 in England who might be my ancestor, or if any of these Fords sound like part of your family, I would love to share information. Our Charles FORD (b Hampshire) married in Donneraile CORK to Hannah/Honora/Anna MORGAN (b Donneraile) thirty years earlier in 1835. I would love to know what connection there was between the FORDs & CORK County. Charles was a soldier who consequently travelled where he was needed, including Tasmania, mostly taking his wife and increasing tribe of children with him. He & his wife settled after retirement in Woodend Victoria Australia. Frank Whillans, Melbourne Victoria.

I might be willing to help you with creating a database, I have extensive experience creating websites. My mother's Ford Family is included in a searchable database on my site called Mercer Family History at http://mercerfamilyhistory.com which is named in honor of my grandmother's family. The unique thing about the software that I use for the site is that it can be have multiple administrators setup and by using a username and password system can be administered from any computer with internet access. The site uses PhpNuke as its core software and with several added module's including TNG Genealogy Software. It has the features of adding document's, personal or headstone (in a general photo album or individual album), a forum, and a downloads section for documents (mine has some family tree's and a DAR Book on my Ford Family in Acrobat Reader format) accessible by members only. Each person has their own individual page that includes tabs for viewing their Descendants and Ancestors in several different viewing options and includes the ability to download a gedcom file for an individual by any number of generations set by the administrator of the site. Take a look at the site and let me know if you think it would work. I went ahead a captured a domain name called fordfamilydatabase.com in case there is a interest in starting it up before I suggested this so it would be available. The cost would be what it would cost me which would be $8.88 a year for the domain, $29.00 for the Genealogy Software and right now I can obtain hosting for $15.00 per month for 5 GB (5,000 MB) and 100 GB (100,000 MB) per month Data transfer. Future costs would be determined by the amount of bandwidth and storage size the site requires. I can set up a PayPal account with a link on the site for those wishing to contribute. Let me know what everyone thinks. Thanks Charles A. Watkins http://mercerfamilyhistory.com

Hello, Joy, Many thanks for respondimg to my e mail, but I hope I didn't write it in such a way that I offended you - that is the last thing I wanted to do. I think my frustration is purely personal - my poor old dad (his mother was a Mary Anne Ford born in Paddington in London in 1889) was brought up in a very, very poor part of London and when he was 14, enlisted in the Army where he stayed until 1976 (a very long service), during which he was a Japanese Prisoner of War, a Korean POW, etc, but it seems so awful that his life and family just seems to have vanished into space... I also kow that if if wasn't for the US, we probably wouldnt even have the opportunity to go this farback. So please dont think that I am knocking the system - I just want my dad and his family to be recognised in some way. Hello, Jay, So nice of you to reply to my e mail. Thank you very much. As the system originated from the US, I guess we've got a lot of catching up to do, thereby the lack of response from us Brits. Please don't take my remarks adversely. I do get frustrated about the UK lack of response. When you mention the Mayflower - may I please tell you that the other half of my families, the Tooley family from Lincolnshire (Boston, to be precise) were instrumental in teh perception of the Mayflower project, Im very proud to say - after suffering many years of injustices from parliment here, including a John Tooley who was hung, drawn and quartered from preaching against the English hierarchy. Many, many years ago, but Im proud of them just the same. By this you will perhaps think that I have a lot of prejudice, I haven't - it just makes family history so fascinating, especially as those genes are part of me and mine. Once again, many thanks, Lovely to hear from you, Barbara "J.D. I am too old for any computer skills (other than typing), but I will make copies of any thoughts I get on this matter, collect them together, and pass them on to a young friend in England that I worked with over here in the US years back. He has all the needed skills and he might determine that it might even be an profitable venture as so many people would only have to contribute a small amount I would expect. So if any others out there have any thoughts on a centralized data base please pass them on through the web site to me and I'll pull them together. Ted Ford
I second the motion Ted, that sounds like a great idea! Kind of like a puzzle piece storehouse where we could all share pieces of information to create a larger picture ! It would also be lovely to share our resource tools, website links, local libraries that we frequent. I would be more than happy to look up information at my library for anybody on this list when I go. I'm sure others would be willing to do the same. If we had a list of website links to these libraries we could see what they had to offer then request the person who supplied the link to look in a particular book for the information that we need. And who knows?? The information that we need may be the same as what they are looking for. I'm sorry that I don't have the computer know-how to do this but I sure hope that someone out there does and steps up to the plate. Is there any kind of web site for pensions, or for prisoner of war people? It seems like there would be somewhere. Hi there FORDS all over the world, I don't think there is any bias on the message board towards the USA but apparently more a lack of genealogical interest from the UK, or perhaps the sources in the UK are so good that the use of the message board is not so necessary, but it is disappointing not seeing many enquiries from our shores. My 'brick wall' lays with my grandparents, George Ford born Bristol c1863 and Elizabeth Clayton born Worcester c1870. but having posted enquiries on the Ford message board and the Worcester board neither raised a reply, but I keep subscribing in the hope that something will appear. I must say that some fascinating info appears from the States, even though I probably have no links.
