Hi, I read that a certain John FORBES had a swarthy complexion and am wondering if this was characteristic of most Forbes or unique. I had an ancestor who was described as being extremely dark. No other reference was made to any of our relatives external appearances other than this. I'm clutching at straws to pin down an elusive John Forbes. Any comments?

We have a family letter from Robert Forbes Winslow; in it he enclosed a very early photo of a painting of the Winslow family showing Thomas as a child with his siblings and their parents. I found a copy of the Winslow genealogy book written by the Australian Winslow through alibris.com and it tells many family stories. Tell me your connection; you can write directly and not through the posting board...L.

Anyone tracing this line with Philip Forbes in it would likely have great difficulty. He lived many years in Franklin Co, VA and listed himself as widowed on the census records, when in fact his wife, Emeline, was living in the home of Cluff Brooks and raised three sons George, Wiley and Charles as Brooks. She had a son William B who was listed on the 1860 census in Cluff's home also. On that census the three boys William, George who was my great grandfather and Wiley are listed with Forbes as their last name. Cluff had a son named William Daniel Brooks who is documented in records in Franklin Co. But his mother was Cluff's first wife Permelia Mattox. He accepts Emiline's boys as his children in his will. Phillip had a daughter Julia living with him until he was in his 80's and after his death she married the boarding house keeper where they had lived named Claiborne Wray in 1902. She had two daughters Cora A and Lucy P born in 1869 and 1874. They apparentl! y went by the name of Wray when they married. This is all documented in census, marriage and wills recorded for Franklin Co VA. Good luck in your searching. This has been a very interesting search. But as you may imagine very complicated also.

Phillip is the person who was a silver smith that I mention. William B is listed with his mother on the 1860 Franklin Co Census and was listed as 10 years old. His mother was Emeline Forbes. There is a marriage record for her and Phillip in Franklin Co Marriage Bonds 1 Oct, 1842 with the surety Harvey Hieth. In the 1870 census records Emeline is in the home of Cluff Brooks and William is not listed but his brothers WT is listed as Wiley and Geo W is listed as George and there is another brother Charles. Then in 1880 Emeline is still in the home of Cluff Brooks and only her son Charles F is listed with her and his daugher and a granddaughter.

Hello, My GGGrandmother Mary Corniela Burgess 1874-1954 married a man with the last name of Forbes. I don't know if she married him before or after marrying Charles Pryor. She had three children with Mr. Forbes, Ralph Frank, Rose Ella (married Elmer Baldwin) and Lilly (she died as a child). They probably lived in the IA-MO-KS area. Any help would be great. Thanks, Jody http://www.angelfire.com/ca7/woodworth
