    3. The book, "The House of Forbes" by Alistair and Henrietta Taylor, if still available, can be ordered by sending the mailing information to Clan Forbes Society, P. O. Box 18193, Asheville, NC 28814. The last price I saw was $62.95 for members of the Clan Forbes Society and $77.95 for non members, postpaid. You might also wish to consider joining Clan Forbes! 3. Dear John Brandt I am descended from Alexander FORBES who married Christian BROWN in Flisk, Fife Scotland in 1753.This is as far back as I've been able to get although there is a Forbes, marrying in the parish who could be his father.Alexander and Christian had 9 children. Their son James, my 3x great grandfather, married Margaret PAGE in 1792 in Abdie, Fife, Scotland. They had 8 children. Their daughter, Jane , my 2x great grandma, moved to Ontario in 1828. Her brother Alexander, moved to Baltimore that same year. Any of the FORBES researchers on this forum seem to have had much earlier emmigrations to the USA and don't seem to match up with my line.Do any of mine match up with yours? 1. [FORBES] PA. and VA . Forbes
    2. Bill Forbes
    3. Dear Forbes List: It has been sometime since I last posted: I am looking for lineage for Ephraim Forbes, my great3 grandfather. I pick him up in Knox County, Clay, Ohio in 1830. He stayed there until 1858 and then moved to Bronson, Mi. and then to LaGrange, In. in 1872. In the 1850 census for Knox County, OH., Hillier Township he declares that he was born in Va. and his father was born in PA. Ephraim was born on July 10, 1810. He married a Margaret Hall. I am told that they married in Pittsburgh, PA. but I cannot verify. undocumented family history says they came down the Forbes Road to the national road and into VA. Any information or ideas would be helpful. Thanks, B. Forbes

    1. [FORBES] List Etiquette
    2. john brandt
    3. COUSIN JOHN'S LIST ETIQUETTE & ADVICE This is to help subscribers with their posts to the list. This is not carved in marble and small infractions are certainly tolerated. This list of tips has been compiled by me with the help of many other subscribers. 1- No flaming or rudeness is acceptable on the list. If this rule is violated I will contact the person privately, asking that they refrain from such behavior. If that subscriber continues with this behavior I will remove them from the list. 2- Before sending a post to the list be sure and check the subject line and make certain it is relevant to your posting. When a message has been responded to several times the subject has probably changed and you need to change the subject line. 3- Remember that all replies to postings on this list go to the list, not to the individual subscriber. When you hit the reply button please look and see what address your reply is going to. If it is a personal reply change the address to the person you are sending it to. REMINDER: if you have "reply" and a "reply to all" buttons your posting will go to the list no matter which button you choose unless you change the address. 4- If you are requesting information on one of your ancestors please include dates and places, even if you have to give suppositions. Names only are not acceptable. In every line there are usually many people with the same name. Without some additional information it is impossible to trace the individual. 5- When replying to a message please edit the message before you send it. Read the entire message, not just what you wrote. Highlight any portions that are not relevant and hit the delete key. This includes the "footers" at the end of the message. I have seen some postings with as many as six "footers" at the end of the message. Not removing these just adds useless used space, which is important to some subscribers. If the original message is lengthy by all means edit it. Leave only the important part with your reply. 6- When posting and replying to the list please remember that all of the subscribers are persons worthy of respect. Some are "newbies" and some are "old hands" and all should be treated with courtesy. Do not hide behind the mask that some people feel in internet provides. Communicate as though that person was standing in front of you and remember the good manners your mother taught you . I hope this helps all of us in our communicating with this list. I will probably be adding other thoughts as time goes by. My best to you, John Brandt Listowner

    1. [FORBES] Hidden Treasures at Rootsweb
    2. john brandt
    3. Hi Everyone, The following article is the first in a series being presented in Rootsweb Review. I hope you find something helpful. My best, John HIDDEN TREASURES AT ROOTSWEB by Robert R. Tillman, President and CEO <rrti@rootsweb.com> RootsWeb's many treasure boxes can not be opened with just a simple "Open Sesame" as was done in "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves." First, RootsWeb is huge -- there are literally more than a million Web pages of content and hundreds of millions of names on RootsWeb. Second, RootsWeb actually consists of thousands of Web sites, databases and files that have accumulated in numerous different formats over more than 13 years, and continues to grow daily. However, because this accumulation was not planned, there is no single place where you can search through all of these dazzling jewels. Of course, genealogists know that half the fun is in the hunt. Here, in the first part of a series, are some tips and a treasure map to lead you to the gold buried at RootsWeb. There are the "searchable" parts which are accessible through the numerous search engines at RootsWeb, and there are resources at RootsWeb that are not searchable, but which must be browsed. Take time to "browse" as much as you "search," since the free association inherent in browsing can lead you down many interesting and fruitful paths. Finally, come back often, as many megabytes of new material are added daily. o Mailing Lists. Browsing is the best way to find mailing lists that relate to the surname, location and/or topic of interest to you. Genealogy-related mailing lists hosted at RootsWeb can be found at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/>. Once you have found a mailing list of interest, you can search the messages year by year by using the Mailing List Interactive Search. <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl> It provides access to the millions of e-mail messages in the Mailing List Archive. Do a separate search for each mailing list and for each year that such mailing list is archived. Some messages date back to as long ago as 1987. o When choosing a promising list to search, be creative and thorough. Don't limit yourself to just surname hunts. While looking for a particular ancestor, check out also the mailing lists that relate to country of origin, places of habitation, migration routes, ethnic group and general interest topics, such as the Roots-L list <http://searches.rootsweb.com/roots-l.html>. Wonderful gems turn up in the most unlikely places. o USGenWeb Archives National Search. Search a large variety of material, including census records compiled by the USGenWeb Project, the largest volunteer genealogy project on the Web. <http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/htsearch> Tracing your roaming American ancestors? Try a state-by-state search in the USGenWeb Archives Digital Library <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm> o U.S. Town and County Database. Know the name of the town or city, but not the county? To find the name of the county, use <http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi> o WorldConnect. Search the names of millions of ancestors in family trees submitted by other genealogists. More than 100,000 new names are added daily. <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi> Other places to dig for gold: much material at RootsWeb is not indexed by a search engine. In addition, it is often useful to browse certain material looking for associations, ideas, and inspiration. Search engines answer exactly the query you enter; however, you might not always ask the right question. Here are some places to browse: o Genealogy Web Sites on FreePages. This is a growing area. <http://freepages.rootsweb.com/directory/genealogy.html> RootsWeb Resource Clusters. These are research templates that facilitate research by surname or location. In many instances, individuals with Web sites at RootsWeb of relevance to a particular surname or location have linked their Web sites to the relevant resource cluster. o Surname Resources at RootsWeb. <http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/> o U.S. County and State Resources at RootsWeb. <http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/> o World Resources at RootsWeb. <http://resources.rootsweb.com/world/> o WorldGenWeb contains links to Web sites listing resources available for researching genealogy related to many countries around the World. <http://www.worldgenweb.org/> o International Pages at RootsWeb: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~websites/international.htm> Good luck with this treasure map. May it lead to valuable new information about your ancestors.

    3. Forbes in Florida Hello to all Forbes. Good to see this list reasonably active again. I will take this opportunity to re-post my Forbes interests. I am a direct descendant of Christina Forbes and Donald Bruce. I am interested in contacting any descendant of the following: 1 Donald Forbes b: in Caithness, Scotland .. +Margaret Gunn b: in Caithness, Scotland m: 1774 in Caithness ..... 2 Christina Forbes b: 1775 in Caithness d: 1855 in Munsary, Caithness ......... +Donald Bruce b: 1769 in Caithness, probably Watten d: 1857 in Munsary, Caithness m: 1796 in Rangag, near Latheron ............ 3 David Bruce b: 1796 in Watten, Caithness d: 1869 in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, emigrated to NZ 1965. ................ +Christina Munro b: 1809 in Caithness, Scotland d: 1882 in Te Awamutu, New Zealand m: 1830 ............ 3 Alexander Bruce b: Abt. 1804 in Watten, Caithness, Scotland d: 1891 in Te Awamutu, NZ ................ +Janet McKay b: Abt. 1816 in Caithness d: 1906 in Te Awamutu, NZ m: in Caithness, Scotland ............ 3 James Bruce ..... 2 Margaret Forbes, no other information ......... +William Sutherland ..... 2 Alexander Forbes emigrated to Queensland, Australia, probably before 1865. ......... +Ann Unknown ..... 2 Robert Forbes b: March 1784 in Latheron, Caithness, Scotland d: 17 January 1837 in Quincy, Florida, USA ..... 2 William Forbes b: 1786 in Latheron, Caithness, Scotland d: 17 October 1852 in Quincy, Florida, USA Robert and William emigrated to Florida about 1820. Robert and William inherited the large estates of John and Thomas Forbes who may have been their uncles, and who may have been in the USA prior to 1785. The large inheritance came from the sale of over 1,000,000 acres of Florida in 1818, known geographically as The Forbes Purchase. This land was basically south and west of Quincy. The ultimate disposal of these estates included a large sum to my grandfather in 1915. Robert and William Forbes died childless and the estates were first inherited by their sisters. One, possibly Robert, was a judge. A number of descendants of Christina and Donald Bruce also went to Florida during the 1849 to 1881 period. Three went direct from Scotland; another three went from New Zealand. Looking forward to making contact, regards to all, Dave Collins dave.clnz@xtra.co.nz ph (09) 298 6614

    1. Re: [FORBES] My FORBES ancestors
    2. If anyone's posted my line of Forbes(s)es, I missed it. So here goes: The earliest Forbes in my records is Joseph Forbes, m. Elizabeth McCorkle. They were in the Philadelphia, PA area in the mid 1700's. They had at least three children, John, Joseph Jr., and Ann. By 1780 (and probably much earlier), the family had settled in York Co., SC. John married Rebecca Barron (daughter of Archibald Barron) in York Co. around 1780. They had a dozen children: Elizabeth, Margaret, Rebecca, Sarah, Anne, Rachael, John, Archibald Barron, Prudence, Thomas, Tabitha, and Arthur. Archibald Barron Forbess (b. 1795) m. Margaret Catherine Hutchinson in about 1817. They produced 10 children: John Calvin, Margaret, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel H., Rhoda, Archibald Barney, Mary Isabella, Rebecca, William Flannigan, and James Perry. Sometime after about 1830, Archibald and Margaret packed up the kids and moved to Tennessee, along with some other families from York Co. Archibald and his family lived for a while in Tipton Co., Tennessee (he and Margaret both died in DeSoto Co., Mississippi in the early 1850's). Thomas Jefferson Forbess (b. 1821) m. M. Catherine Goforth. They also had 10 children, including Thomas Jefferson, Jr., from whose line my husband descends.

    3. I, too, appreciate John taking over the list. I already feel overwhelmed just trying to keep up with my e-mail. I don't know how the list owners do it. My line: Alexander FORBES b. 19 Oct 1784, and bapt. 9 Nov 1784 in the Dutch Reformed Church of German Flatts. His parents are given as John Vorbos and Margreth. The sponsors were Georg Nelles and Margreth Cunnigham. The NELLES/NELLIS family genealogy book lists Alexander's parents as James FORBES and Margretha NELLES, and James' parents as John FORBES and Margreth. 1. Re: [FORBES] Angus Forbes
    2. My Forbes line took a sidetrack so I am looking for more info to put it right side up. I have Angus Forbes b c1821. He m Angeline BENNINGTON in Rockbridge Co., VA on 9/30/1846. I had always been of the impression that Angus' father was Angus also. Now on 11/5/1810, Angus m Lucy Geer, which all seemed to fit as it should. However, I couldn't find Angus in the Rockbridge 1850 census. Last year I found them living in Allegheny Co. in 1850--BUT with a George age 55 and Nancy age 66. NOW--who are these people and why are they living with them? Went to Covington and couldn't find anything in the Courthouse or the Historical Society. I think Nancy is a little old to be the husband of George BUT could her age be off and George is her eldest son? I do know that the father of Angus that m Lucy is William. Any and all help is appreciated!!!!! Doris Snyder dvs1119@aol.com

    3. Dear Kay, I am going to have to do some searching but I feel I might be able to help you. What I do know is that Sir John "the Black Lip" FORBES' third son was John, the first of the houss of Tolquhon. Also, William FORBES, Laird of Thornton acquired the Thornton lands through his marriage to Elizabeth STRACHEN, whose father Alexander STRACHEN was the Laird of Thornton. BTW, William was born ca 1542 at Corse and died 1 Apr 1614. We'll probably find that Thomas was the grandson of William. I'll let you know when I find the rest of this puzzle. Regards, John >Welcome John. >My Forbes was THOMAS FORBES Laird of Thornton Castle near Montrose Scotland. >Born about mid 1600's I think. >He married ELIZABETH LYON of Glamis castle. >Thomas's father was >JOHN FORBES who married Lady ELIZABETH STANHOPE >does anyone know the forbears of these FORBES? >I have been told that my Forbes were of Tolquhon Castle near Aberdeen. I >note that yours,John are of Corse Castle, yet you have a Thornton Castle >incumbent in your line. William Forbes b. 1542. does this mean that my >Forbes are descended from your William? >Hope one of you Forbes chasers can throw some light on my ancient Forbes. >Kay Middleton-Gray.
