Does any one on the list have information about one Andrew Forbes, possibly b. in PA. Have no idea who his parents are or date of birth. He was md. 17 Mar 1831 to Nancy Ann Alexander AGER, who was b. in Ireland 1811, parents' names unknown. I think the marriage probably took place in PA since the first child William Wallace FORBES was b. there 15 July 1832. Another child Thomas Andrew Forbes was b. 1834. Andrew & Nancy were in Monroe Co. MO in 1835 when Andrew acquired property in that county. He died there in September of 1835. He wasn't in this county long enough to be counted in a census. I have not been able to connect this Andrew with any other Forbes/Forbus families in PA and would appreciate any information or clues that might lead me to perhaps location of the marriage. Have little or no information on wife Nancy either, except that she was b. in Protestant Ireland and came to America age age 4 and was possibly one of twins. Thanks, Joanne Joanne A. Is it true that the name 'Forbes' in Scotland is/was pronounced as if it had two sylables? And, if so, did this give rise to the name 'Forbush' on the American frontier?
<< Is it true that the name 'Forbes' in Scotland is/was pronounced as if it had two sylables? And, if so, did this give rise to the name 'Forbush' on the American frontier? >> Yes, that's true - at least to some extent. My family still pronounces it "FOR-bess."
Dear Barbara, This is very possible. If someone wrote the name the way he/she heard it the spelling could very easily have been written as Forgues. Most likely when they arrived in America. John >Dear list, > Has anyone else experienced that their Forgues family changed the spelling >of their name to be Forbes? There appear to be a lot of Forbes's out there >but few Forgues. Just another example - gggranma Rebecca Forbes showed up on the Fayette 1850 census living with daughter and Son-in-law Dimond. She's listed as Rebecca Forbs. And her son Simion Forbes in the 1860 Clinton co.,Ill census is listed as S.B. Forbs with his family. Same thing happen with Guffy and Guffey. Rebecca K. Forbes Martinez
Dear list, Has anyone else experienced that their Forgues family changed the spelling of their name to be Forbes? There appear to be a lot of Forbes's out there but few Forgues. My great grandfather was Rufus Forgues but his wife was known as Mary Louise Forbes of Adams, MA when I knew her. I have not found a single relative of Rufus Forgues(Forbes). He supposedly was born in Eastern New York, like Cohoes or in the Sarranac Lake area. Anyone have access to these vital records? Or can instruct me to a web site? Thanks Barbara
Dear John I noiticed you speak of your FORBES data base. I cannot get any further back than the marriage of Alexander Forbes and Christian Brown in Flisk, Fife, Scotland in 1753. I have been unable to determine Alexander's parentage. I've also reached a dead end in tracing my great great grandmother's brother, another Alexander Forbes, who emmigrated to Baltimore, Maryland around 1828. Apparently he married a woman there who already had 2 children. They had 2 more of their own. A daughter married a Mc Candlish, in Baltimore, and a son moved west and was never heard from again. If you find anything to help me I'd appreciate it. Even with an uncommon name in the Forbes, like ANGUS, I am still having problems tracing him. Doris
Dear Jenny, I'll search my FORBES database; however, I must say that John was by far the most popular given name in the FORBES ancestry. Hi Doris, I have put you in my address book and will keep an eye out for your Forbes Line. Jim Taylor of Warren, Ohio
Jim: I have a Forbes line that goes to Rockbridge Co., VA. Our first definite is Augustus (Angus) T. Forbes b c1821. He m Angeline Bennington in 1846. We are trying to put the puzzle together backwards. One of our cousins said that she thinks his middle name was possibly Taylor since that name showed up in the Allegheny Co. ones. Keep an eye out and I will do the same. Doris Snyder dvs1119@aol.com
I have hit a brick wall researching my ggrandfather James Forbes Taylor. So I am trying any avenue that might get me further back on my family tree. I am hoping that James Forbes Taylor's middle name might be his mother's maiden name. So that is why I am posting this inquiry to the Forbes list. This is what I know about my ggrandfather: He was born on September 15, 1849 in New York City. He died on December 23, 1902.( I think near Port Jarvis, New York) He married Melissa Angeline Carpenter. James and Melissa had the following children... Joseph Levi Taylor August 04, 1872 Carrie Doty Taylor November 20, 1874 Edwin Hurst Taylor July 26, 1877 Jenny Taylor March 06, 1884 Willard James Taylor April 05, 1887 I am hoping that someone might have information on James Forbes Taylor and I can climb higher on the family tree. Thank you, Jim Taylor of Warren, Ohio

Hello to all Forbes. I am a direct descendant of Forbes, some of whom settled in Florida. I would welcome anyone who can see a link with, or make use of the following. I am a direct descendant, g-g-g-grandson, of Christina Bruce, nee Forbes. Christina was born March 26, 1775, at Latheron, Caithness, Scotland. She died May 8, 1855 at Munsary and is buried at Latheron Church. She married Donald Bruce [1769-1857] on March 15, 1796. Christina was a daughter of Donald Forbes and Margaret Gunn who were married on Feb 12, 1774, at Latheron. Christina had a sister, Margaret, who married William Sutherland [I have a number of other Sutherland links from the same region]. She had a brother, Alexander Forbes who emigrated to Queensland, Australia. Christina's other two brothers, Robert [1784-1837] and William [1786-1852] both went to Florida in about 1820. They seem to have inherited much of the proceeds of the sale of the 1817 Forbes Purchase in Florida. John Forbes was the principal character in the Forbes Purchase and his brother Thomas was also involved. I have no idea of the relationship between Robert and William, and John and Thomas. Possibly John and Thomas were brothers of Donald Forbes, i.e. uncles of Robert, William, Christina, Alexander and Margaret. Either Robert or William was a judge. When they died, they left their fortune to their sisters, Christina and Margaret. Some of the proceeds from this trickled down to numerous relatives all over the world, including the children of 14 grandchildren of Christina in New Zealand. This money arrived in 1915, just in time to finance my grandfather to fight in France in WW1. One of Christina's sons, James Bruce, went direct from Scotland to Florida in 1849. Two grandsons, Donald and Hector Bruce, went direct from Scotland to Florida in about 1862-1865. Two grandsons, William and Alexander Bruce, went from New Zealand to Florida in 1881 to "assist with the winding up of the Forbes Estate". They remained in Florida. One grandson, James Bruce, went from NZ to Florida in 1915, lived in the "Forbes-Bruce homestead" for five years, and returned to NZ in 1920. Believe it or not, one of his descendants lives about 20 kilometres from me and, in spite of the most friendly and soft approaches, for some reason he will not explain, refuses to talk to us! We have no idea why! James Bruce married Laura Turner. We have had no contact with any of these Forbes or Bruces since about 1920. I am currently building a very comprehensive family tree and would be very pleased to make contact with any descendants of these people any where in the world, including New Zealand where one or two branches are rather vague. I hope to visit Caithness in Scotland in 2001 to visit more of the 'family places' than I had time to do in 1996. Looking forward to making contact, regards to all, Dave Collins dave.clnz@xtra.co.nz ph (09) 298 6614 ==== FORBES Mailing List ==== This FORBES list is currently available for adoption!
