I have found my gggg grandfather Richard Forbes, born 1796 in New Bandon, Gloucester county,New Brunswick, he was either a farmer or a shoemaker. He married Anne Eady of Bathurst on July 27,1830. He died Apr 27,1872 and was buried in Stonehaven cemetary, Gloucester county. Family stories told that the original Forbes came to Canada with Gen. Wolfe to fight at The Plains of Abraham,of this I have been able to make no connection yet. I did find however, record of a James Forbes who came over to fight in the American revolution. In Apr.1776 the Blackwatch and Fraser Highlanders 42nd regiment left Scotland to America. After the war, he was discharged at St John in Oct 1783 off either the Jason or the Mercury. In 1787 he took lot 96 at Nashwaak north of Fredricton in York county. I have also found reference to a John Forbes, who was a 15 yr old drummer in 1783 when the 84th Highland regiment " Royal Highland Emigrants" was discharged in Halifax. Hope this might be of some use to you Jean C lyne

    3. Hi everyone I'm going back into the history books. In 1623, James 1st of England granted land in Ireland (counties Leitrim and Longford) to Arthur, James and Robert FORBES, natives of Scotland. Arthur died in the wars in Germany in 1623; his son also named Arthur FORBES was created Earl of Granard and his descendants are well documented and live in county Longford to this day. Arthur's elder brother John also had a son also named John FORBES who went to America and died in Massachusetts in 1661. His descendants are documented. My question is "What happened to James FORBES and Robert FORBES ?" My family show up in county Longford, Ireland in 1800. I am trying to bridge a 150 year gap. Thanks Sheila Forbes Ontario, Canada

    3. Hello Forbes Listers! I am new to the list so I will tell you about my brickwall. I hit it years ago and just can't break it down. My ggg grandfather Francis FORBES first appears in 1799 at Lady Yesters Parish in Edinburgh where he marries Elizabeth BROOMFIELD or BROWNFIELD (mistakenly written as Brown in the PR) on the marriage record he is said to be a gentleman's servant. Next he appears as a grocer of Canongate on his first two children's baptisms. Then the family shift to Glasgow where my ancestress is baptised. Her father is again a servant, then when the next two children are baptised, both in Glasgow parish, he is a spirit dealer and a wine merchant. The last of these children is born in 1807 and the family disappears. Later in the census of 1851 another Forbes is living with the eldest daughter of the family and he says he is her brother and he was born at South Leith. I have not found his baptism there at all, but he was born about 1817/18 so it would seem the family moved back to the Edinburgh area and had many more children that I have not located. In 1834 my gg grandmother Elizabeth was married at Melrose. Her husband was the son of a family who had 600 acres but he was just written up on the PR as Andrew Lees whilst his wife Elizabeth was written as Miss Elizabeth fforbes. My elusive Francis does not even allow me to know whether he was working or middle class. On Elizabeth's death certificate her father is down as a gentleman. He certainly led an interesting life but I have no idea where he was born or where the family moved after leaving Glasgow about 1807. >From the names of their children Francis' parents where probably Robert or Francis and Janet or Jean. He might have been born anywhere but I have found a Robert Forbes married to a Jean Dunlop in Glasgow who was a sergent in the army. They married in 1770 had one child in Glasgow and disappeared. His regiment moved about in Scotland then went the America at the time of the Revolutionary War. No more children appear anywhere until 1780 when Robert was back in Glasgow and out of the army. He also had many occupations including clerk and wine merchant. My Elizabeth was born in 1779 so probably Francis was born during the years that the family of Robert and Jean Forbes disappeared. So the big question is, of the people who are still reading and have not given up, are there any of you who have any idea what I should do next to find Francis and his family after they left Glasgow and Francis baptism? Are there any military records of baptisms of the children of non-commissioned officers at that time 1770-80? Robert was in the 4th regiment of foot. All ideas are welcome and I would love to hear from you. Regards, Gene. ----------------------------------------------------- Click here for Free Video!! http://www.gohip.com/free_video/

    1. [FORBES] Nathaniel and Ruth (Lyman) Forbes
    2. Mark/Kathy Clark
    3. I am looking for the names of the children of Nathaniel and Ruth Lyman) Forbes from Hartford, CT. They were married about 1791 in West Hartford, CT. I was told that my husband's ggg grandfather was a son of Nathaniel Forbes. His name is Isaiah Forbes, born March 24, 1810. The following is his obit from July 1885 in Missouri. Obituary: Death of Dr. Forbes Dr. Isaiah Forbes, who has been styled the father of dental surgery in St. Louis, died yesterday morning at the advanced age of 75 years. He had only been ill a week, and succumbed to general debility consequent on old age. He was born in Albany, New York and after a brief experience in the mercantile business in New York City, which was closed by the great fire of 1835, he studied dentistry. A year later he began practicing and in 1837 removed to St. Louis. Having interested himself in the public schools of the East, Dr. Forbes was elected to the School Board shortly after his arrival here, and served with honor and distinction for fifteen years, filling the President's chair for two terms and for the remainder of his time holding office of Chairman of the Teacher's Committee. Under the administration of Mayor Mullanphy, he served on the Board of Alderman and exercised personal supervision over the City Hospital. The deceased also served as a Director of the Bank of Missouri for four years, and was honored by election to the positions of President of American Dental Association and Vice President of the Southern Dental Association. In 1848 Dr. Forbes married Miss Cornelia Staats, who, with a family of five children, survives him. The funeral will be conducted under the Auspices of the Odd Fellows. I'd like to find out more about Isaiah's siblings - at this time I don't have any names. On the 1860 Federal Census Index for St. Louis, Ward 6 it shows an Arithusa L. Forbes, age 40, living with them. Kathy in Michigan

    2. Ken Forbes
    3. I am working on reconstructing the descendant tree of Nathan and Thankful (Hale) FORBES. Any information is appreciated. Nathan Forbes (1755-1833) was the son of Jonathan Forbes (1707-1787) and Abigail (Filley) Wood (1719-1808). It was a second marriage for both of them. Nathan was most likely born in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. Abigail was born there, and her father, Josiah FILLEY, died there in the time frame October 1748 - May 01, 1750. Windsor land was deeded to Abigail. Jonathan was "of Windsore" in two 1754 land transactions, and he may have been there as early as 1749. They appear to have removed to Granville, Hampden/Hampshire County, Massachusetts by 1757. Jonathan's first wife, Mehitabel COLE, died between 1747 and July 08 1754.
