    3. Dear Bill You have to know the parish they came from and then you can order in the microfilm for that parish to your closest Latter Day Saints' church library. Pay them a visit, use their data base to find your people in the indexes.Their indexes are more complete then the IGI available at www.familysearch.org. From the index, you'll be able to choose the right film. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Queries Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEX.2ACIB/704.1 Message Board Post: Bill, Getting records from England and Scotland is not a major problem. It depends on the time period you are looking at. For Ireland, I do not know. For England and Wales from 1 Jul 1836 forward you need to get access to what they call St. Catharine's Index. It is an alphabetized list of ALL the births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales, grouped by quarters of a year (JFM, AMJ, JAS, OCD). From St. Catharine's you get a location, a volume, and a page number. You then order the actual certificate from the General Registry Office for England (http://www.pro.gov.uk/) - cost is £8 (about US$12) for each certificate. (They accept credit cards.) BTW, be sure to specify the complete certificate, otherwise you get an abbreviated one with limited information. The St. Catharine's volumes can be rented on microfilm at your local LDS Family History Center. Alternately, if you know the exact parish church you can rent the microfilm of the parish church records at the LDS FHC and bypass the GRO-E $12 cost for each certificate. They are exactly the same data. The church parish is not part of the St. Catharine's Index data. Prior to 1 Jul 1836 you must know the exact parish they were in and you can rent the microfilm of the parish records at your local LDS FHC. For Scotland you can log onto the GRO-S (http://wood.ccta.gov.uk/grosweb/grosweb.nsf) - cost £6 (about US$9) to search their database for 24 hours. Once you found some promising individuals you can order the certificates at £10 (about US$15) each. (They accept credit cards.) Alternately, if you know the church you can rent the microfilm of the parish records from your local LDS FHC. The parish church is usually part of the data returned with a search on the GRO-S.

The British government was not concerned about those leaving the British Isles, they were happy to be rid of them. All of the passenger lists of the ships arriving in America are available from the NARA in Washington, as well as your local LDS Family History Center. You will need the port of arrival and an approximate date. Go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp.Enter Boston in the Place Search and select the items for immigration. Find your local LDS Family History Center and rent the microfilm.

    1. [FORBES] Alexander Forbes-Scotland 1838
    2. Alexander Forbes was my Great-grandfather. My grandfather was Arthur Alexander Forbes. A letter from my 2nd cousin, which I found on here, said Alex is buried in the Myrtle Street Cemetary in Eureka, Ca. She said she hasn't been able to find the grave yet though. Maybe my grandfather Arthur is buried somewhere around there too. If you think we might be related, I'll send you the family tree. Arthur Forbes had 10 children, 2 of which died at birth. My father Ray Calvin Forbes died 2+yrs. ago at the age of 93 down below San Francisco, Ca.
