Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEX.2ACIB/739 Message Board Post: I am looking for any information on Peter B. Forbes who married Sally R. Dillon on March 20, 1823 and Thomas J. Forbes who married Elizabeth Dillon on June 29, 1825. Sally and Elizabeth are daughters of Henry Dillon and Joanna Pasley and were born, married and died in Franklin County, Virginia. My assumption is that Peter and Thomas are brothers who married sisters. If they are brothers (or not), who are their parents? When and where were they born? Any help would be appreciated
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEX.2ACIB/738 Message Board Post: Dear All: There is a new extension of the message boards and mailing list that has been created. The Scottish Clans message boards and mailing lists have been established to cover those subjects that are generally off topic in these boards and lists. You can subscribe to the Clan mailing lists by either A: email to the Clan-FORBES-L-request@rootsweb.com and put subscribe in the body of the message or B: go to www.rootsweb.com > Lists > International > Scotland > Clan and activate the email request C: For the Clan message boards www.rootsweb.com >boards >topics >ethnic/race >Celtic >Scottish Clans Some of the current posted threads and topics are: A: Ancestors B: Events and Reunions C: URL's and Web Sites D: Castles I will be adding more threads/topics over the next weeks as time and suggestions occur. I plan to add threads on Tartans, Heraldry, Customs ( Hogmanay) and Culture ( Food, Songs, Dance etc) If there is other subject matter that you think needs a thread please let me know or add it to the threads and topics on the message board The posting process is a little different than normal so please read the posting guidelines. Basically you would reply to the thread/topic where you want your own post/thread followed. This then gives you a URL that you can send by email or post to other web sites. Then related parties, and interest groups can have their own unique thread to follow. I've tried to organize the posts so we get the natural filing structure that this technique gives us. This way we won't have a series of unrelated posts that you need to track and search through pages upon pages There are a couple of other major advantages to posting to the Clan message boards A: There is no virus threat. So you can post there with no possibility of getting an infected message back. All replies to the mailing list go back to the rootsweb servers by default and the virus are thence removed. B: The messages are gatewayed over to each Clan mailing list so you do get the wide distribution of the mailing list. So you can post there on the message board and still get the wider disribution and archiving of the Clan mailing list. C: Your post is visible for an extended period of time. D: If you activate the "board notification" then you will receive one email notice whenever there is a post to any and all boards you are trackings. So it's the equivalent of one "super digest" . Nice invention by some creative person here at Rootsweb. No other web site offers this that I know of ! So please do me a favor and post this notice to other mailing lists and surname and topics message boards that you think might be interested in their Scottish Clan and Related Family /Sept heritage . Best Regards John A Hansen Clan Board Admin BTW: Septs is normally used more by the Irish Clans but in actual practice, I see a lot of people still using this term as a definition for the related family to the main Clan. There are a number of septs defined at a good web site at www.electricscotland.com It cross references both ways. Septs of the Clan and then the cross reference of the Septs that normally are accepted as belonging to a certain Clan. There are also several good books on the subject as well. Usually a study of Scottish History will tell you the related parties and families in a certain Clan. I don't know of another ethnic group that has been so careful to define their ethnic heritage and related families as well as the Scottish. Even to the point of creating a court under the jurisdiction of the Lord Lyon to sort out the arguments and disputes that arise from time to time. Scots are proud of their heritage and their ancestry and the love of the people for their own glens and bens is strong and deep. JAH

Forbes The funeral of Miss Emma S. Forbes, one of the oldest members of the First Congregational church, was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Whitney funeral home, No. 921 Main street. The Rev. Frank W. Gray, pastor of the Burnside Methodist church, and the Rev. Truman H. Woodward, pastor of the First Congregational church, conducted the services. The bearers were William P. Stanley, Henry Olmsted, George L. Forbes and Clarence J. Cannon. Mrs. J. E. Freeman sang during the service. The interment was in the Center cemetery. Miss Forbes lived in the same house in which she was born during the greater part of her life, the Timothy Forbes homestead on Forbes street. According to a local tradition, Revolutionary war silver was stored in the cellar of this house to pay the soldiers of Rochambeau. Miss Forbes' father, Giles Forbes, lived there after the death of his grandfather. The house is directly east of the residence of James S. Forbes.

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Forbes Classification: Pension Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEX.2ACIB/734 Message Board Post: The following obit is reprinted from The Daily World in Aberdeen, Wash. It is here with their permission. Robert B. Forbes-December 1, 2001 BREMERTON-Aberdeen native Robert Briedwell Forbes, 77, of Kingston died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in the Harrison Hospital at Bremerton. Mr. Forbes was born March 14, 1924, to Robert W. and Hope (Briedwell) Forbes, members of pioneering families in Washington and Oregon. He attended elementary and high school in Aberdeen until his father was called to active duty at Fort Worden in Port Townsend in 1940. He graduated from high school at Port Townsend in 1941 and attended Linfield College for a year before enlisting in the Army. During World War II, he was a paratroop officer in combat in the European and Pacific theaters. Mr. Forbes was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star. After the war, he attended the University of Oregon, then the University of Washington, where he received a bachelor of science degree in 1950 and a doctorate in geology in 1959. His thesis was on the geology of the Juneau Ice Field in southeast Alaska, an area he first visited as geologist and executive officer with the Juneau Ice Field Research Project in 1949. He was a member of the Sigma Alphqa Epsilon fraternity. >From 1950 to 1956, he worked as a civilian Arctic and mountaineering expert for the Army, including being part of the team that brought the bullet-proof vest and insulated arctic boot to soldiers on the front lines in the Korean War. He joked he was more scared as a civilian in Korea than he'd been in combat during World War II because he couldn't shoot back. In 1959, he went back to Alaska with his family, joining the geology faculty of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. His love for Alaska came from his boyhood fascination with a grandfather, a pioneer in Alaskan fisheries and canning at the turn of the century and Alaskan geology largely unknown at the time. Mr. Forbes was with the university's Department of Geology and the Geophysical Institute until 1978 retiring to begin a consulting career. In conferring the title of professor emeritus upon him, the university said he'd won the esteem of students and colleagues for his ability and vision and earned an international scientific reputation for himself and the school. In his more than 40 field seasons in Alaska, he covered most of the bush country and published many scientific articles. He was involved in numerous search and rescue missions and was awarded a Commendation for Meritorious Service for rescuing elderly residents stranded in the Alaska Pioneerss Home during the Fairbanks flood of 1967. In 1986, he was appointed state geologist and director of the Alaska Geological and Geophysical Surveys. When he retired as state geologist in 1991, the Alaska legislature passed a resolution honoring him for his contributions. Mr. Forbes made two trips to Antarctica. In 1956, he accompanied Admiral Richard Byrd on the first American Antarctic expedition since before World War II. In 1957, he was awarded the Department of the Army's Outstanding Performance Award for his Antarctic research. A mountain ridge in Antarctica bears his name. With his family, he spent a sabbatical in 1963-64 as a visiting research professor in petrology at the University of Tokyo. After retiring, he and his wife, Norma, returned to Washington, living at Port Townsend, then Kingston. Mr. Forbes helped in the continuing development of the Coast Artillery Museum at Fort Worden as chairman of the board and as director. He was an avid skier and mountaineer and belonged to the American Alpine Club for more than 25 years. He continued to work in geological research and consulting until his final illness. Mr. Forbes is remembered for his warmth, humor and stories of his adventures. He is survived by his wife of Kingston; two sons, Rob of Boulder, Colo.; and John of Bainbridge Island; a brother, Norman of Fife, and three grandchildren. A memorial and celebration of his life are set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the chapel at Fort Worden. (note: I am of no relation, Anyone having questions or comments may e-mail me directly. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEX.2ACIB/729 Message Board Post: Dear All: Some volunteers from the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution ( DAR) have established a wonderful new program for users of Rootsweb. These volunteers will do lookups in their database and records if you think one of your ancestors served in some capacity during the American Revolution. These volunteers have more databases that are available to them than the ones commonly used by the search engines. You can then also find out if others have become DAR members by using that Ancestor. This may show you other descendants and also provide some documentation that you may be able to use in your application! The process is fairly simple : Go to the DAR message board: There are two ways to do that: > www.rootsweb.com > message boards > topics > organizations and societies > DAR Or if you want the easy way :-) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar Address your message as follows: subject : DAR Lookup > surname> location > dates In the body of the message put the information regarding the person, Be sure to fill out the surnames box at the bottom since the new search engine will be keying on that item. Leave the email response box checked and you will be notified when the DAR volunteers respond . Give them a week or so to get to your request. We really appreciate their efforts. This info can be key for: a: joining these prestigious organizations ( DAR & SAR) b: sending a request for the copies of the files that were submitted and the information they have available. Many thanks to: Glenda Thompson DAR VIS Volunteer Vice Chrm. Patriot Lookup for organizing this effort and all the many volunteers that are donating their time and effort to us instead of pursuing their own ancestors, Best Regards John A Hansen board admin. BTW: Please forward this message to other lists and boards that each of you are involved in. A word of thanks to each volunteer that does this work and especially the one that responds to your post would probably be highly appreciated.
