    3. I am also descended from William Gutridge Garland. David was my 3rd ggrandfather. Please fill in some information for me. I have Ezekiel Garland born 1782 died abt 1817 in Burke Co., NC. Married Susanna(h) Grindstaff 30 Mar 1802. What are the particulars on Elvina? I would like to add her to my database. Bridget Hampton's parents were Ezekiel Hampton and Sarah Jane (Jenny) Griggs. She was not the niece of Col. Andrew Hampton. According to all the research done by many people Col. Andrew Hampton was not a relative. Another Andrew Hampton was Ezekiel Hampton's father. I have no information on William Gutridge Garland's parents. ----- Original Message ----- From: <jotoney@aol.com> To: <FORBES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2002 10:23 AM Subject: [FORBES] Re: Gutridge M. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: FORBES Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/EEX.2ACIB/745 Message Board Post: A short history of the Clan Forbes The name Forbes is a clan-name deriving from a place -- in Aberdeenshire. The clan, however, is almost certainly of Irish/Dalriadic origin, and their presence in north-eastern Scotland may have been part of the early Dalriadic policy to 'police' the Picts. The boars' heads on the Forbes coat of arms commemorate the exploit of a distant ancestor who rid their part of Aberdeenshire of a wild boar which was terrorizing it, and their gathering cry of 'Lonach' is the name of a hill in Strathdon, where the clan asembled in times of trouble. The March of the Forbes men at the annual Lonach Gathering is now an established part of modern Highland life. The ancient seat of the chiefs was Druminor Castle, but later it became Castle Forbes. The present chief's seat is Balforbes near Craigievar Castle, which is another Forbes castle belonging to the Forbes chieftains who became Lords Sempill. John of Forbes is known to have possessed the Forbes lands in Aberdeenshire as early as the reign of King William the Lion (1165-1212). In 1236 Fergus of Forbes received a charter for these lands from the Earl of Buchan. Alexander de Forbes was made Governor of Urguhart Castle near Inverness and defended it against Edward I of England in 1204. He was forced to surrender with his garrison, but the English put every man alive to the sword after having accepted their surrender. His son, also named Alexander, supported Robert Bruce and Bruce's son King David II. He was killed in 1332 at Duplin, fighting at King David's side. Robert Bruce gave the family further lands in Aberdeen, and Sir Alexander de Forbes, who died in 1405, was Justiciar and Coroner of Aberdeenshire. Another Alexander Forbes, chief of the clan, became Lord Forbes around the year 1436, and he married a granddaughter of King Robert III. The Forbeses seem to have pursued a policy not unlike that of the Argyll Campbells, in supporting law and order and the established government. In 1488 yet another Alexander, Lord Forbes, furious over the treacherous murder of King James III, who was stabbed to death by a false priest after the Battle of Sauchieburn on 11 June of that year, raised an army to revenge the King. He carried the dead King's blood-soaked shirt on the point of his spear and was only persuaded to disband his army by the direct intervention of the new King, Jamves IV. The principal enemies of the Forbeses seem to have been the Gordons -- who were Catholic and rebellious by nature. The Forbeses had accepted the reformed faith. The 8th Lord Forbes married Lady Margaret Gordon, eldest daughter of the 4th Earl of Huntly. Their son turned Catholic and entered a religious order, and Forbes disowned his wife. This led to a clan battle in 1572 at Catt in Aberdeenshire, in which the Gordons had the better of the day, killing Lord Forbes's brother. Lord Forbes, however, subsequently married Janet Seton of Touch, and not suprisingly in 1595 he was one of the lieutenants of the northern coutnies created by the King in order to suppress the 'Popish" Earls of Huntly (Gordon) and Erroll (Hay). Thereafter the chiefs pursued the Protestant line faithfully and were opposed to Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Catholic Stuarts. Nevertheless, questions of religion and of 'rightul' kings cut across ordinary loyalties, and we find the Forbeses of Pitsligo on the Jocobite side in 1745. After Culloden their chieftain was able to remain a fugitive on Forbes lands until his death fifteen years later. The Forbeses of Culloden produced Lord President Forbes, who exerted a powerful influence on many of the clans who were undecided which side to take in 1745. His success in keeping many of them at home, neutral, is said to have contributed considerably to the Government vicotory at Culloden in 1746. In 1853, Charles was a barrister, living at 12 Jane Street, Southwark (now Joan Street). In 1876, when Grace A-F F got married in Hammersmith, his occupation was gentleman. Grace married Alfred Foot born 1852 in Finsbury. Witnesses at the wedding were Charles Francis Forbes and Katharine Forbes. Grace and Alfred had at least two children - Alfred Forbes Foot and Grace Forbes Foot. Alfred Forbes was born in 1877 in Croydon and Grace Forbes was born in 1879. They had moved to Penge Road, Croydon, by 1881 and Alfred's sister, Mary E, was living with them too. In 1899, Alfred Forbes married Harriet Emma Rose Mason, born 1877 in Horsham. They had five children - Frederick Forbes born 1900, Beda Forbes born 1902, Alfred Forbes born 1904, Grace Forbes born ? and Albert/Herbert Forbes born ? In 1900, they were living in Tamworth Road, Croydon. At some point before 1902, they moved to West Ham. Frederick Forbes (my grandfather) married Lilian Rose Elliott in 1924 in Brighton, and they had five children - Joan Beda, Alfred Forbes, Frederick Leonard (my father), Gordon Jeffery and Maureen Lilian. Beda Forbes had five children - Jeffery, Barbara, Pauline, Clifford and ??. Alfred Forbes, Grace Forbes and Albert/Herbert Forbes are a mystery at the moment. Joan Beda went to Canada in 1945 ish and has three sons. Alfred Forbes went to Australia in 1940 ish and has a son by his first marriage. Frederick Leonard has two daughters. Gordon Jeffery has a son by his first marriage and two sons and a daughter by the second and, finally, Maureen has two daughters. Phew - if you want more details, just ask Julie

    1. [FORBES] Scottish Clan DNA Testing
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EEX.2ACIB/743 Message Board Post: Dear All: There is an emerging interest in looking at the possibility of developing a database of the DNA markers for the Scottish Clans and Septs. The Scottish clans are very unique in that the Clans have been identified and family relationships tracked for hundreds of years. Some Clan family have documented histories stretching back to before 1000 AD ( and some back to 500AD) . So this leads to some interesting possibilities of identifying current clan family members and determining if the Scottish ancestry line can be identified. Some have cautioned: be careful because you may find out that you are not who you think you are :-). Non-paternity events were as frequent then as they are now. There is also an interesting mailing list here on Rootsweb : Genealogy-DNA-L@rootsweb.com. It turns out that A couple of factors make this a very interesting study for the Clans to be involved in. A: The mtDNA passes down from mother to daughter only. So the matriarch of the family becomes clearly identified and traceable. Scottish history is one of the few in the world where female lineage was often documented. Note that non paternity events don't occur in this DNA since obviously the mother knows her daughter is her offspring. B: The Y DNA passes from father to son. Then we can again provide a clear line of potential coordination between the written documentation and the DNA markers. There are some other fine points of the DNA identification and you can find out a lot more in the archives of the mailing list. Anybody that is really interested in participating should please reply to me at the email address below or reply to this message post. Then just list only your interest, surname , contact info and potential Clan association. I don't want to clog up the archives with a lot of "me too" emails and board posts. :-) Any comments or questions are appropriate to post. Someone will then contact you for further details and how to proceed. Please note there will probably be cost of some amount for the DNA test. I don't know what that amount is for the test but it probably about $250. My initial survey indicates that we will want the 23 marker DNA test to get some definitive answers. I expect to get more details next week. Please feel free to pass this message along to other mailing lists and boards that may have a high per centage of Scottish Clan or Sept descendants. Should be an interesting database over the months and years :-) Was that my Chief ??? Best Regards John A Hansen jahansen@qwest.net Clan Board and List Admin
