It is believed Marie came to Canada with her parents. I agree. actually, I ended up spending my afternoon seeing what I could find out. I don't know why I want to fill in that gap about how/why Marie ended up in Canada. From what I have found, you are right about the birth taking place in France (and the marriage of Marie Giton and Pierre Conille in France as well), it seems that Pierre Conille died about four years after their marriage, leaving his wife and a young daugther (ancestor Marie who married Etienne Fontaine). They seem to have arrived in Canada alone and Marie Giton married Andre Bernard in 1676 in Quebec. This Andre Bernard was already in Canada, in Beauport in 1664, and he was originally from La Rochelle in France too. So my guess would be that the two families knew each other, perhaps, and that once Pierre died, Marie Giton was sent to Canada or chose to go to Canada to marry Andre Bernard. They lived together on Ile d'Orleans, Marie Giton and Andre Bernard had at least one daughter together, but I think they might have had four children. And, then of course, Marie Conille married Etienne Fontaine. This is likely since there do not seem to be any Conille children or other relatives in Canada around that time. I guess we'll never know for sure what happened. But it would be strange for a woman and a young girl to travel alone with no plans for survival once in Canada, unless she was a 'fille du roi' and there is no mention of that anywhere. cheers, Lise Fontaine
