So variations such as Fontaine, Fountain, Fountaine, Fontene, LaFontaine, LaFountain, and LaFountaine are not uncommon. It was a matter of preference and if they could write (and who wrote their name for them). So it is always best to look for minor differences in spelling that nearly sounds the same. I have researched lines that even changed their name to Spring or Springer. The name is a location surname meaning someone who lived near a fountain or a spring. Of course, there are many fountains in Europe, so groups of people with the common name may not be even closely related. This kills the "buy your family coat of arms" document sales pitch. There is no proof unless you are lucky enough to find your way back to a knight around the turn of the last millenium. Not an easy feat considering many records were lost after two world wars and numerous invasions. Of course, the coat of arms is nice to look at and is somewhat personalized. So buy it if you wish.

    1. [[FONTAINE]] Hello Everyone!
    2. Aiki-Tony
    3. Just letting everyone know that I have just recently taken over as the new list manager. If you have a problem, let me know and I'll do my best to help. My genealogy addiction is focused on the Canadian line of FONTAINEs. However, I have some information on the US lines or know where to direct you to find some help. I'm active on the Genforum and Familyhistory bulletin boards as well as here. For the FONTAINE links I know of on the web, go to the webpage at: www.geocities.com/heartland/farm/5233/ Canadian Fontaine Genealogy Association If you know of more, please pass them along and I will work on adding them. Please feel free to discuss any questions, share obituaries you find, share research you have found or anything else that may help the approximately 32 members currently subscribed. I recently added and verified marriage records in the old Canadian counties Arthabaska and Bagot into my database. Many of these counties no longer exist or keep changing boundries due to political reasons. I have been trying to make some sense of the history, but still have many gaps to fill. Jacques Fontaine was a "merchand de bois" or "wood merchant" in the city or Orléans, France. Bienvenu was a "nom de guerre" or a war nickname given to his son Pierre during the King William Wars in New France. Pierre was stationed in the fort Verchères, near Montréal. However, after searching for many years, we have not found any information on his parents Jacques Fontaine and Claude Girou/Giron. Several attemps have been made by those who do speak french (I am not one). The records appear to be lost after the results of two world wars and countless other mishaps of three centuries. If you do find anything, I would surely like to know. As this is my direct ancestor and Jacques is as far back as we can reach. 1. Lanouette Connection
    2. Hi! My name is Henry Paul Lanouette, born August 19, 1930, in Dover, New Hampshire, as was my father, Henry Joseph Lanouette, born October 22, 1907, and died there November 28, 1992. My grandfather, Henri Emil Lanouette, though, was born in Gentilly, Province of Quebec, on February 24, 1882, and died July 29, 1966. I have as a hobby, the genealogy of the LANOUETTE families, and currently have a 16,000 plus name archives of LANOUETTEs (and connected families), their spouses and descendants. I am trying to connect all LANOUETTEs, the world over, under one family tree. All LANOUETTEs share the same common ancestor named PIERRE RIVARD, SIEUR-DE-LA-NOUETTE, born in 1661, at Trois Rivires PQ. Pierre's father, NICHOLAS RIVARD, left the land of his birth, Tourouvre-au-Perche, Normandy, France, circa 1650, at the request of the king, and went to 'New France', which we now call Canada. Nicholas, our ancestor, married CATHERINE ST-PERE, whose first husband was killed by the Iroquois at Trois Rivires PQ. If you could send (or mail) me any data (two, three or four generations) of any LANOUETTE ancestor, I should be able to tie you into THE LANOUETTE FAMILY TREE; and in return, send you your additional LANOUETTE ancestors, all the way back to the year 1540. I ask for nothing in return, except for the possibility of knowing you ... and being able to correspond with you. I'm just a LANOUETTE, who would like to meet and know another LANOUETTE cousin (or descendant). I am _not_ a con-man! I eagerly await your reply! God bless you, my friend, your family, ancestors and descendants! FYI, my address is: 11 So Geo Wash Rd, Enfield CT 06082-4541 tel.: (860) 749-0457 Internet address: < PepereLan@AOL.COM >
