    3. Hello again, I don't know if any of you have seen this or not, but the Office de Tourisme on Ile d'Orleans has done a site that is really quite nice. Here's the address: http://www.iledorleans.qc.ca/ It's better than anything I could show you with the pictures I took. But on their geneology page, they have a list of all the original families from the island and some have links, so far there is no link for the Fontaine page, so I was thinking of doing something that would provide a link to all the existing pages (I know there are at least two!) and add to it as I find time, maybe others are interested in doing something similar. >She was baptized on Sept 27, 1665 in St-Nicolas of LaRochelle in >Aunis, France. She arrived in New-France (Canada) while she was >very young with her mother yes, I find myself very interested in the reasons why people left France to take on such an adventure and hard life. I wonder why a mother would make the journey with a four year old (or thereabouts) daughter. I wonder if her husband (Marie's father) died, or if they separated and she was sent to Canada. I know that France shipped many women to Canada, orphins and prostitutes, women seen as 'problems'. They were to find husbands and be taken care of. >This marriage produced >twelve children and I have this list. Also I have the 9 generations >(Etienne FONTAINE and Marie CONILLE being the first >generation. Thanks for all the information. I also have this list, going right down to my generation. I think it's amazing that we can go back so far in our records. Cheers, Lise

    3. Bonjour Madame Lise! I found something that may help you if you have not already found it. It is in "La Toile du Quebec" under "Fontaine" and belongs to Louise Smith, and is very interesting. It is quite long, but I send you the part about Marie CONILLE. She was the daughter of Pierre and Marie GITON. She was baptized on Sept 27, 1665 in St-Nicolas of LaRochelle in Aunis, France. She arrived in New-France (Canada) while she was very young with her mother because on August 14, 1669, her mother cancelled a marriage contract in front of public notary named Becquet. Marie CONILLE's father, Pierre CONILLE never came to Canada. Marie was 17 years old when she married Etienne Fontaine in Ile d'Orleans. They did not know Marie's date of death. This marriage produced twelve children and I have this list. Also I have the 9 generations (Etienne FONTAINE and Marie CONILLE being the first generation. ----- Original Message ----- From: Lise Fontaine <lfontaine@teaser.fr> To: <FONTAINE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2001 8:08 AM Subject: Re: [FONTAINE] Fenelon Fontaine and Ile d'Orleans > Hi all, > > >Suggest you put on a webpage > > I will do that. 3. Hi all, >Suggest you put on a webpage I will do that. I have the pictures on the computer from my visit here. The pictures of I have from my own family will have to wait until I get back to France and my scanner. And when I do, I'll put up exactly where they fit in to the geneology; but roughly, it would go something like Etienne > Antoine > ...... > Fenelon (Leon) - married to Sophie Bolduc > Napoleon (whose brother is Stanislas, my great grandfather, maried to Celine Denis) I went to the settlement land of Etienne Fontaine on Ile d'Orleans just across from Quebec City, it was great! I only wish I could go in the summer, in winter the graves all covered in snow and most places are closed. But, everyone I met was very friendly and helpful. It seems that all the records are kept in Sainte Famille (I might be wrong about that, but the island is very small, so the towns are close by) and there is a geneologie store that I plan to visit. There is a book on the history of the Island and its settlers, it's 80 Canadian dollars, it's beautiful but I didn't see any mention of Etienne Fontaine in it, or any other Fontaines for that matter. My line in the family comes from Etienne's son Antoine and I think that his children left the island and moved to the south side of the river to Beauce. The English attacked and controlled the island around that time, so I wonder if they left because of that. One thing I don't quite understand is how Marie Conille ended up in Canada. I find it hard to believe that her mother left France with her when she was just a young girl, without her father. Does anyone have records on her birth in France? Cheers, Lise

Some children stayed in NH, some MA, and some RI. I have notes saying Godefroy Siméon Fontaine Sr. was in Hamstead, Rockingham, NH in 1880 NH Census. He later moved to Argile, MN. Also there is a Godfroid Fontaine in the NH Deaths that died Aug-1919. Not sure if this is him. Judith : ) Looking at the various records and my attempt to make sense of them, this is what I came up with: Etienne Fontaine m. 8-Feb-1683 St-Laurent, Ile d'Orleans, Montmorency, Nouvelle-France Marie Conille Their son: Etienne Fontaine m. 16-Nov-1706 St-Laurent, Ile d'Orleans, Montmorency, Nouvelle-France Anne-Francoise (Marie) Mineau m. 8-Sep-1715 St-Thomas, Montmagny, Montmagny, Nouvelle-France Marie-Madeleine Fournier m. 13-Aug-1737 St-Francois-de-Riviere-Sud, Montmagny, Nouvelle-France Marthe (Marie-Genevieve) Dagneau dit Laprise 2nd marriage son: Etienne Fontaine mc. 6-Jan-1739 Notaire C. Michon Catherine Gaudin So my answer is that Etienne (son of Etienne and Marie Conille) married Marthe Dagneau, not Etienne (son of Etienne and Marie-Madeleine Fournier). This is based on the children's births. If Etienne (sone of Etienne and Marie-Madeleine Fournier) married in 1737 and 1739, he would have had children by two wives at the same time! I don't think so.
