    1. [FOLKLORE FAMILY] Mary Celeste
    2. Kath
    3. Mary Celeste was launched in Nova Scotia in 1860. Her original name was "Amazon". She was 103 ft overall displacing 280 tons and listed as a half-brig. Over the next 10 years she was involved in several accidents at sea and passed thru a number of owners. Eventually she turned up at a New York salvage auction where she was purchased for $3,000. After extensive repairs she was put under American registry and renamed "Mary Celeste". The new captain of Mary Celeste was Benjamin Briggs, 37, a master with three previous commands. On November 7, 1872 the ship departed New York with Captain Briggs, his wife, young daughter and a crew of eight. The ship was cargoed with 1700 barrels of raw american alcohol bound for Genoa, Italy. The captain, his family and crew were never seen again. A British Board of Inquiry in Gibraltar gathered evidence and testimony from the boarding party that had discovered Mary Celeste as a drifting derelict. Lack of evidence of violence ruled out piracy or foul play, but no conclusions as to the fate of the mortals aboard was forthcoming. The real mystery did not begin until 1884 when Arthur Conan Doyle writing under a pseudonym published a story about a derelict ship called "Marie Celeste". This tale recounted the actual events of the Mary Celeste with enough added fictional and provocative detail to capture the public interest. Since then and to this day, no two accounts of the story are the same.

    1. [FOLKLORE FAMILY] The Great Amherst Mystery
    2. Kath
    3. Ghosts of Eastern Canada a.. Nova Scotia - Princess Street, near Church St., Amherst, NS In September 1878, Mr. Daniel Teed and his wife, Olive Cox Teed, lived on Princess Street in Amherst. Their household included Mrs. Teed's niece, 19-year-old Esther Cox. Miss Cox soon became famous as part of "The Great Amherst Mystery." Before the ghostly manifestations, Miss Cox had been the victim of an attempted rape in a secluded part of Amherst. Her attacker, Bob MacNeal, was a shoemaker with a terrible reputation that Miss Cox had not known about. She escaped the attack with minor injuries. The "mysteries" started soon after this event. The hauntings began with small poltergeist phenomena: little fires, voices, and rapping noise. It soon escalated to include times when Miss Cox would seem to inflate like a balloon, even to her extremities, and then abruptly return to normal size. These events were witnessed by a large number of people. The hauntings followed Miss Cox outside the house. Once, the knocking and rapping noises interrupted a Baptist Church service that Miss Cox attended. Although she sat towards the back of the church, it sounded as though someone was hammering on the front pew, making it impossible to hear the service. Miss Cox left the church in humiliation, and the noises stopped immediately. Desperate to find the source of the problem, Miss Cox tried automatic writing and consulted spiritualists. The primary ghost claimed, in automatic writing, to be Miss Maggie Fisher. Miss Fisher had attended the same school as Miss Cox, but had died around 1867, before graduating. Miss Cox had not known Miss Fisher, but was aware that they'd been in school together. Other ghosts came forward during this time, announcing themselves as: Bob Nickle, age 60, also a shoemaker like Bob MacNeal who'd attacked Miss Cox. Another was Mary Fisher, sister of Maggie Fisher. Other ghosts included Peter Teed, John Nickle, and Eliza MacNeal. The number of ghosts and "coincidences" among names and professions reduces the credibility of this part of the story. Further, Bob MacNeal, Miss Cox's attacker, later claimed that he'd been haunted for years by the same Bob Nickle. The accounts sound as though Mr. MacNeal was trying to shift the blame for his violent acts, to the ghost. Nevertheless, Miss Cox continued to be plagued with hauntings wherever she went. Hoping to turn her misfortunes to her advantage, Miss Cox went on tour in June 1879, hoping to draw audiences to hear her story and make a living from the income. She was assisted in this by actor Walter Hubbell, who'd visited Amherst specifically to witness the now-famous ghostly manifestations. However, the crowds were skeptical and easily angered. One evening in a theatre, a rival theatre-owner leaped to his feet and began heckling Miss Cox and Mr. Hubbell. The crowd joined in, and soon a riot broke out. This was Miss Cox's last time on stage, as her touring efforts were a clear failure. The series of manifestations continued until one dramatic event changed everything: Miss Cox went to work for Arthur Davison of Amherst. Mr. Davison was a skeptic, although he admitted to witnessing numerous poltergeist events at his home when Miss Cox was there. The worst was when the ghost(s) set fire to his barn and it burned to the ground. Mr. Davison accused Miss Cox of arson, and she was convicted of the crime by an ambivalent court. Her sentence was four months in prison, but public support for the unfortunate woman led to her release after only one month. After that, Miss Cox was troubled by minor poltergeist events, but nothing significant. She later married Mr. Adams of Springdale, Nova Scotia. Her second husband was Mr. Shanahan of Brockton, MA. Esther Cox Shanahan died in 1912. After her death, Walter Hubbell published a book about "The Great Amherst Mystery," and included a 1908 affadavit that was signed by 16 Amherst witnesses to the hauntings.

    1. [FOLKLORE FAMILY] Old age
    2. Pat Childs
    3. I have always dreaded old age. I cannot imagine anything worse than being old... How awful it must be to have nothing to do all day long but stare at the walls or watch TV. So last week, when the mayor suggested we all celebrate Senior Citizen Week by cheering up a senior citizen, I determined to do just that. I would call on my new neighbor, an elderly retired gentleman, recently widowed, who, I presumed, had moved in with his married daughter because he was too old to take care of himself. I baked a batch of brownies, and, without bothering to call (some old people cannot hear the phone), I went off to brighten this old guy's day. When I rang the doorbell this "old guy" came to the door dressed in tennis shorts and a polo shirt, looking about as ancient and decrepit as Donny Osmond. "I'm sorry I can't invite you in," he said when I introduced myself, "but I'm due at the Racquet Club at two. I'm playing in the semifinals today." "Oh that's all right," I said. "I baked you some brownies..." "Great!" he interrupted, snatching the box. "Just what I need for bridge club tomorrow! Thanks so much!" "...and just thought we'd visit a while. But that's okay! I'll just trot across the street and call on Granny Grady..." "Don't bother," he said. "Gran's not home; I know. I just called to remind her of our date to go dancing tonight. She may be at the beauty shop. She mentioned at breakfast that she had an appointment for a tint job." I called my mother's cousin (age 83); she was in the hospital... working in the gift shop. I called my aunt (age 74); she was on vacation in China. I called my husband's uncle (age 79). I forgot; he was on his honeymoon. I still dread old age, now more than ever. I just don't think I'm up to it.

    1. [FOLKLORE FAMILY] Gas prices
    2. Pat Childs
    3. Gas Price War Give this a try. Subject: Gasoline Prices I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. This makes no sense to any but the oil companies as the spot price of oil has hardly changed. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas, or curtail our driving. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that really might work. Please read it and join with us if you agree! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town (California). Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing THEIR gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting or limiting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 =3D 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3D 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you? Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK! YOU KNOW THEY LOVE HOLIDAYS AND SUMMER TRAVELERS Bob Brennan

This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_06A2_01C1DFAA.53A76C00 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Five Must-Have Ingredients for the Organic Gardener's Toolkit by Arzeena Hamir For any gardener who still hasn't been convinced about the need to garden organically, here are some statistics that may help change your mind. In March of 2001, the American Cancer Society published a report linking the use of the herbicide glyphosate (commonly sold as Round-up) with a 27% increased likelihood of contracting Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. John Hopkins University also revealed that home gardeners use almost 10 times more pesticide per acre than the average farmer and that diseases caused by environmental illness, exposure to chemicals etc., is now the number one cause of death in the U.S. With the EPA's recent phasing out of common pesticides such as Dursban and Diazinon, we are now realizing that many of the chemicals that we thought were "safe" were never actually tested to see what their affect on children, women, and the elderly could be. The time has come to reassess our dependence on pesticides. For anyone contemplating the switch to organic gardening, here are a few ingredients that should be in every gardener's toolkit: Garlic Many cultures around the world have used garlic as a natural antibiotic and antifungal remedy. When garlic is combined with mineral oil and soap, it becomes a very effective pest control product. However, when it is sprayed, it is not a selective insecticide. It can be used to control cabbageworm, leafhoppers, squash bugs, whitefly, but will also affect beneficial insects so be careful where and when you apply this product. Recipe: Allow 3 ounces of finely chopped garlic to soak in 2 teaspoons of mineral oil for 24 hours. Add 1 pint of water and Πounce of liquid dish soap. Stir well and strain into a glass jar for storage. This is your concentrate. To use: Combine 1-2 tablespoons of concentrate in 1 pint of water to make the spray. Do be careful not to make the solution too strong. While garlic is safe for humans, when combined with oil & soap, the mixture can cause leaf injury on sensitive plants. Always test the lower leaves of plants first to make sure they aren't affected. Milk Fungal diseases can be a serious problem for gardeners, especially in the heat of the summer. Powdery mildew and black spot seem to be the most common diseases that cause gardeners to reach for the spray bottle. Now, instead of reaching for a chemical fungicide, gardeners can open the fridge for an excellent fungal control - milk! In 1999, a Brazilian scientist found that milk helped control powdery mildew on cucumbers just as effectively as a synthetic fungicide. Since the study was published, the news has traveled around the world and encouraged gardeners and farmers alike to try milk as a fungal control for a variety of diseases. So far, there has been success reported on the use of milk to control powdery mildew on a variety of different plants. In addition, it has also been found to be an affective control of black spot on roses. Any type of milk can be used from full milk to skim to powder. However, the low fat milks have less of a chance of giving off any odour. The recipe calls for milk to be mixed with water at a ratio of 1 part milk to 9 parts water and applied every 5-7 days for 3 applications. Beer Slugs are attracted to chemicals given off by the fermentation process. The most popular bait has been beer. However, not all beers are created equal. In 1987, a study at Colorado State University Entomology Professor Whitney found that Kingsbury Malt Beverage, Michelob, and Budweiser attracted slugs far better than other brands. Whatever the type of beer you use, you can create your own slug trap. Use cottage cheese, margarine, or similar size plastic containers. Put between 1/2 and 2 inches of beer in each container and place the containers around your garden, especially around plants prone to slug damage. Never, sink the containers with their rims flush with the soil level or you run the risk of drowning ground beetles, important slug controllers. The rims should be 1" above the soil's surface. You will probably need to empty the container of drowned slugs every other night. The range of slug traps is only a few feet so you need to supply a few traps throughout your garden. Floating row cover The easiest method of pest control is to prevent damage in the first place. Using a physical barrier like a floating row cover will prevent insect pests from reaching your plants and chewing them or laying their eggs on them. I find floating row covers a must when growing carrots to prevent carrot rust fly damage and when draped over my broccoli, I prevent imported cabbageworm from defoliating my plants. Floating row cover is a fabric made of spun polypropelene fibres. The fabric itself is very lightweight and will sit on top of your plants without causing any damage. The fabric allows both light and water to penetrate it but prevents even the smallest insects like flea beetles from getting to your plants. The fabric is sold at most garden centers under many names like Reemay, Agrofabric and Agribon and comes in a variety of different weights. The lighter weight fabrics are best for use during the summer. The heavier fabrics do hold in some heat and are best used in the early spring or late fall. The added bonus is that they can also help extend the gardening season by a few weeks! Newspaper/Cardboard Weeds are some of the hardest pests to control organically without resorting to physically pulling each one out. If your weeds are coming up in small clusters, it is easy to deal with them by pouring boiling water over them. However, if you've got a large area, the best way to control them is to smother them, also known as sheet mulching. I prefer to use either newspaper or cardboard to smother my weeds instead of plastic. Both newspaper and cardboard degrade naturally and will, over time, add carbon into my soil, helping provide organic material. In addition, most newspapers are now printed with soy-based inks, which will also degrade in the garden. If you decide to use newspaper, make sure you place it at least 4-6 sheets thick over your weeds. One layer of cardboard is usually sufficient to get the same effect. It takes at least a month to kill most weeds so I find the best way to use this method is to place the newspaper or cardboard over the weeds in the fall. Come springtime, the weeds are dead, the mulch has degraded, and I've got wonderful soil to work with. For anyone who is concerned about the aesthetics of newspaper or cardboard, you can also cover the mulch with grass clippings, compost or bark mulch for a nicer look. Make sure whatever you use is free of weed seeds. ------=_NextPart_000_06A2_01C1DFAA.53A76C00 Content-Type: text/x-vcard; name="cece business card.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="cece business card.vcf" BEGIN:VCARD VERSION:2.1 N:;cece business card FN:cece business card EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:mawcee@mindspring.com REV:20020409T133838Z END:VCARD ------=_NextPart_000_06A2_01C1DFAA.53A76C00--

    3. Pioneer Thinking http://www.pioneerthinking.com/milkpaint.html 1870 Milk Paint Formula BY DWAYNE SIEVER Copyright ©2002 What is milk paint? Before commercially prepared paint was available, paint was made at home based on formulas handed down from generation to generation. Milk paint was made from old curdled milk or cottage cheese, lime and earth pigment for color. 1870 Milk Paint Formula a.. 1 Quart skim milk (room temperature) b.. 1 Once of hydrated lime by weight (Available at building centers. Do not use quick lime, as it will react with the water and heat up. Hydrated lime has been soaked in water then dried.) c.. 1 to 2 1/2 pounds of chalk may also be added as a filler. Stir in enough skim milk to hydrated lime to make a cream. Add balance of skim milk. Now add sufficient amount of powder pigment to desired color and consistency (Pigment powder must be limeproof). Stir in well for a few minutes before using. For best results continue to stir throughout use. Apply milk paint with a cheap natural bristle brush. Allow project to dry sufficiently before applying next coat. Extra paint may be kept for several days in the refrigerator, until the milk sours. Double or triple the recipe for paint. Allow to dry thoroughly 3-4 hours before use. For extra protection, give paint a coat of oil finish or sealer. Color may change - test in inconspicuous area.

    3. Pioneer Thinking http://www.pioneerthinking.com/tgg-easterlily.html Easter Lily Rx BY SUE NEITZEL © 2002 After the Easter celebration has passed, but before the Easter lily fades, use this holy flower for many medicinal purposes. Once called the "white robed apostle of hope" lilies were found growing wild in the garden of Gethseman after Christ's agony. The beautiful white lilies appeared where ever drops of Christ's sweat fell to the ground in his final hours. The traditional art of drawing out the flower spirit and brewing it into a natural remedy is how flower essences heal; not to be confused with essential oils. An essence is the concentrated energy of the plant. A simple way to make this magical potion is the sun infusion method developed by the famous Dr.Bach. Place a clean glass pan on the grass in the early morning hours. Pour spring water to cover the bottom. Place 3 Easter lily flowers in the pan. Allow this to soak up the suns rays for at least 4 to 5 hours. What happens next is truly amazing, the flowers energy is baked into the liquid, preserving the plants personality and transforms it's self in the essence. When this bottled essence is combined with our own inner energy field, it causes a change in our system. Easter lily essence works to control the tension between our sexuality and spirituality. Every flower that becomes an essence has it's own healing lessons to teach our inner selves. Balance is the key to a healthy soul. The Easter lily also has a strong connection to our female reproductive system and is a powerful detoxifier of the female organs. It has been noted to be a treatment for ovarian cysts. Plus it makes a sweet smelling antiseptic. Lilies of all species serve us in many ways, and should be valued but researched well before using in any manner. The Easter lily is a sacred flower, a gift to serve many spiritual needs. A kin to garlic and onions, lilies healing agents is in its antimicrobial oil, which makes a soothing lily tincture. Perfect for removing splinters. To make you own lily tincture, was a handful of lily petals in warm water, pat completely dry. Gently tear apart the petals by hand and cover completely with rubbing alcohol in a glass bottle. Allow to sit for 2 weeks. Strain the liquid into a clean spray bottle and use on cuts and splinters. So many of our medicines are already made from plants that we often forget that the cure might just be right in our gardens or on the window sill. Trusting the green world to treat our illnesses or everyday cuts and sprains is easy, so why not turn back to the old ways, you have nothing to lose and only knowledge to gain. Easter lilies make wonderful gifts for the holy holiday but don't let them wilt away before making your own heavenly potions. 1. [FOLKLORE FAMILY] 'Pre-Diabetes' Puts Millions at Risk

    3. 'Pre-Diabetes' Puts Millions at Risk Nearly 16 Million Americans May Suffer from the Newly Coined Condition By Jennifer Warner WebMD Medical News March 28, 2002 -- The threat of an epidemic of diabetes is now so great that the U.S. government has created a whole new condition for those at risk, called "pre-diabetes." Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson warns that nearly 16 million Americans may suffer from the condition that sharply raises the risk for developing type 2 diabetes and increases the risk of heart disease by 50%. Research shows that most people with pre-diabetes will develop diabetes within a decade unless they make changes in their lifestyle, such as eating a healthier diet and becoming more physically active. Type 2 diabetes was previously called adult-onset diabetes. In recent years, however, the number of children and adolescents with this type of diabetes has grown -- largely due to the growing number of overweight youngsters. "The good news is that if you have pre-diabetes, you can do something about it," says Thompson in a news release. "We want people to know that pre-diabetes is a serious condition that can be reversed or alleviated with modest changes in their daily routines -- such as eating fewer calories and walking regularly for exercise." Thompson also announced new recommendations about pre-diabetes from a panel including members of the American Diabetes Association. They call for doctors to begin screening overweight patients over age 45 for pre-diabetes. According to the panel, the new term describes an increasingly common condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet diabetic -- a condition known among doctors as impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose. Having blood sugar levels in the pre-diabetes range increases the risk of heart attack or stroke by 50%. The panel also recommends that doctors consider testing overweight people younger than 45 during regular office visits, especially if they are significantly overweight and have one or more of the following risk factors: a.. Family history of diabetes b.. Low HDL "good" cholesterol and high triglycerides (another type of blood fat) c.. High blood pressure d.. History of diabetes during pregnancy or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds e.. Belong to a minority group at increased risk for type 2 diabetes (such as blacks, native Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Pacific Islanders) Prescription drugs are generally not recommended as initial treatment for people with pre-diabetes. Studies have shown that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented through modest lifestyle improvements. But studies have also shown that the diabetes drug Glucophage can help prevent pre-diabetes from becoming full-blown diabetes. New estimates released by Health and Human Services show that the number of Americans who suffer from diabetes has grown by 8% to 17 million, based on updated U.S. census figures.
