A Touch of Heaven 17-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for a class. The subject was what Heaven was like. "I wowed 'em," he later told his father, Bruce. "It's a killer. It's the bomb. It's the best thing I ever wrote." It also was the last. Brian's parents had forgotten about the essay when a cousin found it while cleaning out the teenager's locker at Teary Valley High School. Brian had been dead only hours, but his parents desperately wanted every piece of his life near them-notes from classmates and teachers, his homework. Only two months before, he had handwritten the essay about encountering Jesus in a file room full of cards detailing every moment of the teen's life. But it was only after Brian's death that Beth and Bruce Moore realized that their son had described his view of heaven. It makes such an impact that people want to share it. You feel like you are there." Mr. Moore said. Brian Moore died May 27, 1997, the day after Memorial Day. He was driving home from a friend's house when his car went off Bulen-Pierce Road in Pickaway County and struck a utility pole. He emerged from the wreck unharmed but stepped on a downed power line and was electrocuted. The Moores framed a copy of Brian's essay and hung it among the family portraits in the living room. "I think God used him to make a point. I think we were meant to find it and make something out of it, " Mrs. Moore said of the essay. She and her husband want to share their son's vision of life after death. "I'm happy for Brian. I know he's in heaven. I know I'll see him. Brian's Essay: The Room... In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features except for the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I have liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one. And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match. A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching. A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I have betrayed." The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird. "Books I Have Read," "Lies I Have Told," "Comfort I have Given," "Jokes I Have Laughed at." Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've yelled at my brothers." Others I couldn't laugh at: "Things I Have Done in My Anger", "Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents." I never ceased to be surprised by the contents. Often there were many more cards than I expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped. I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it be possible that I had the time in my years to fill each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature. When I pulled out the file marked "TV Shows I have watched ," I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of shows but more by the vast time I knew that file represented. When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts," I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded. An almost animal rage broke on me. One thought dominated my mind: No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!" In insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it. Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh. And then I saw it.. The title bore "People I Have Shared the Gospel With." The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand. And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt. They started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key. But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him. No, please not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card. "No!" I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No, no," as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood. He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished." I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written. How many times have we felt like we were drifting aimlessly, constantly searching for meaning in a world that seems so mixed up, seeking direction but getting nowhere? But looked at differently, "nowhere" becomes "now here." When we take things apart, stand back, and examine them from a different angle, we often find we held the answer from the beginning. Sometimes, when we're convinced we are the problem, we discover we were the solution all along. When we look for true understanding, we can be sure it exists in this moment, and that we can find it within ourselves, with God's help. The Shoes My alarm went off -- it was Sunday again; I was tired -- it was my one day to sleep in. But the guilt I'd have felt the rest of the day Would have been too much, so I'd go; I'd pray. I showered and shaved, adjusted suit and tie, Got there and swung into a pew just in time. Bowing my head in humble prayer Before I closed my eyes, I saw that the shoe of the man next to me Was touching my own and I sighed. With plenty of room on either side, I thought, "why do our soles have to touch?" It bothered me so; he was glued to my shoe, But it didn't seem to bother him much. Then the prayer began: "Heavenly Father," someone said-- But I thought, "Does this man with the shoes have no pride?" They were dusty, worn, scratched end to end. What's worse, there were holes on the side! "Thank You for blessings," the prayer went on. The shoe man said a quiet "amen." I tried to focus on the prayer, But my thoughts were on his shoes again. Aren't we supposed to look our best when walking through that door? "Well, this certainly isn't it," I thought, Glancing toward the floor. Then the prayer ended and songs of praise began. The shoe man was loud, sounding proud as he sang. He lifted the rafters; his hands raised high; The Lord surely heard his voice from the sky. Then the offering was passed; what I threw in was steep. The shoe man reached into his pockets, so deep, And I tried to see what he pulled out to put in, Then I heard a soft "clink," as when silver hits tin. The sermon bored me to tears--And no lie-- It was the same for the shoe man, For tears fell from his eyes. At the end of the service, as is custom here, We must greet the visitors and show them good cheer. But I was moved inside to want to meet this man, So after the closing, I shook his hand. He was old, his skin dark, his hair a mess. I thanked him for coming, for being our guest, He said, "My name's Charlie, glad to meet you, my friend," And there were tears in his eyes--but he had a wide grin. "Let me explain," he said, wiping his eyes. "I've been coming for months, and you're the first to say, "Hi." I know I don't look like all the rest, But I always try to look my best." "I polish my shoes before my long walk, But by the time I get here they're as dirty as chalk." My heart fell to my knees, but I held back my tears, He continued, "And I must apologize for sitting so near." "But I know when I get here, I must look a sight. And I thought . . if I touched you, our souls might unite." I was silent for a moment knowing anything I said Would pale in comparison, so I spoke from my heart not my head. "Oh, you've touched me," I said. "And taught me, in part, That the best of a man is what's in his heart." The rest, I thought, this man will never know. How thankful I am that he touched my soul! You might be best friends one year, pretty good friends the next year, don't talk that often the next year, don't want to talk at all the year after that. So, I just wanted to say, even if I never talk to you again in my life, you are special to me and you have made a difference in my life, I respect you and truly cherish you. .·:*´¨`*:·..·:*´¨`*:·. *: * Richiele * * *·. .·* `*·-:¦:-*´ ³´`*:»§«:*´`³

GRACE ````````````````````````````````````````````````` This is a MUST read. It is a real life lesson on Christ and why He went to the Cross for us. The boy stood with back arched, head cocked back and hands clenched defiantly. "Go ahead, give it to me." The principal looked down at the young rebel. "How many times have you been here?" The child sneered rebelliously, "Apparently not enough." The principal gave the boy a strange look. "And you have been punished each time have you not?" "Yeah, I been punished, if that's what you want to call it." He threw out his small chest, "Go ahead I can take whatever you dish out." I always have." "And no thought of your punishment enters your head the next time you decide to break the rules does it?" "Nope, I do whatever I want to do. Ain't nothin' you people gonna do to stop me either." The principal looked over at the teacher who stood nearby. "What did he do this time?" "Fighting. He took little Tommy and shoved his face into the sandbox." The principal turned to look at the boy, "Why? What did little Tommy do to you?" "Nothin', I didn't like the way he was lookin' at me, just like I don't like the way you're lookin' at me! And if I thought I could do it, I'd shove your face into something." The teacher stiffened and started to rise but a quick look from the principalstopped him. He contemplated the child for a moment and then quietly said, "Today my young student, is the day you learn about grace." "Grace? Isn't that what you old people do before you sit down to eat? I don't need none of your stinkin' grace." "Oh but you do." The principal studied the young mans face and whispered. "Oh yes, you truly do..." The boy continued to glare as the principal continued, "Grace, in its short definition is unmerited favor. You cannot earn it, it is a gift and is always freely given. It means that you will not be getting what you so richly deserve." The boy looked puzzled. "You're not gonna whup me? You just gonna let me walk?" The principal looked down at the unyielding child. "Yes, I am going to let you walk." The boy studied the face of the principal, "No punishment at all? Even though I socked Tommy and shoved his face into the sandbox?" "Oh, there has to be punishment. What you did was wrong and there are always consequences to our actions. There will be punishment. Grace is not an excuse for doing wrong." "I knew it," Sneered the boy as he held out his hands. "Lets get on with it." The principal nodded toward the teacher. "Bring me the paddle." The teacher presented the paddle to the principal. He looked at it and then handed it back to the teacher. He looked at the child and said. "I want you to count the blows." He slid out from behind his desk and walked over to stand directly in front of the young man. He gently reached out and folded the child's outstretched, expectant hands together and then turned to face the teacher with his own hands outstretched. One quiet word came forth from his mouth. "Begin." The paddle whipped down on the outstretched hands of the principal. Crack! The young man jumped ten feet in the air. Shock registered across his face, "One" he whispered. Crack! "Two." His voice raised an octave. Crack! "Three..." He couldn't believe this. Crack! "Four." Big tears welled up in the eyes of the rebel. "OK stop! That's enough. Stop!" Crack! Came the paddle down on the callused hands of the principal. Crack! The child flinched with each blow, tears beginning to stream down his face. Crack! Crack! "No please," the former rebel begged, "Stop, I did it, I'm the one who deserves it. Stop! Please. Stop..." Still the blows came, Crack! Crack! One after another. Finally it was over. The principal stood with sweat glistening across his forehead and beads trickling down his face. Slowly he knelt down. He studied the young man for a second and then his swollen hands reached out to cradle the face of the weeping child. .·:*´¨`*:·..·:*´¨`*:·. *: * Richiele * * *·. .·* `*·-:¦:-*´ ³´`*:»§«:*´`³
Ashley's Garden By Candy Chand "Mommy, would you be sad if I died?" Disturbing words quickly tumbled from the mouth of 4 year old, Ashley, taking her mother, Kathleen Treanor, by surprise. "Of course, I would, Ashley. I'd miss you terribly." "But, don't be sad Mommy. I'd be an angel watching over you." With a wink and a promise to stay close by her side, childish giggles soon filled the air. Yes, everything was back on key, with no more talk of 4 year olds going to heaven before their time. A few days later, Kathleen brought Ashley to Grandma LaRue's house. Grandma was a wonderful sitter, whose home overflowed with love, comfort and joy. Without a doubt, crafts and homemade cookies would soon be on their way. After tenderly kissing Ashley good-bye, Kathleen jumped in her car and hurried off to work. She'd hardly arrived, and settled comfortably in her chair, with a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee, when she heard it. A huge blast rocked Oklahoma City, and just as quickly, destroyed her world. Confused and unsure of what happened, a coworker flipped on the television. They stood in reverent shock as the news began to unfold. There'd been an enormous explosion at the Murrah Federal Building. Kathleen could hardly believe her eyes. "Not in my home-town," she thought. "Not here!" Soon, young mothers were running back and forth in a frantic search for their children. Kathleen was horrified to discover there'd been a daycare in the building. "My God, the children," she thought, as she began to pray for the desperate families. Within moments, her sister called with unimaginable news, unraveling the last shred of Kathleen's protective shroud of peace. Luther and LaRue Treanor had taken Ashley to their social security appointment, which was inside the Murrah building. Suddenly, the room began to spin. Surreal humming filled Kathleen's ears. Ashley was in that devastated structure - the one she was watching on the news! It took days to discover their complete loss. But slowly, the details came forth. Her mother and father in- law, along with Ashley, were found among the dead. Kathleen immediately slipped into a deep, dark, depression, not able to comprehend how evil minds could change the destiny of so many innocent souls. But months later, Kathleen recalled a prayer she'd uttered just days before the bombing, pleading with God for a message of hope to share with a hurting world. Then her mind raced to Ashley's words just before the explosion, "Don't be sad if I die. I'll be an angel watching over you." Suddenly, Kathleen realized she was being prepared for a mission far beyond her understanding. In gratitude for the peace only God offers, she planted a memorial for her daughter. Today, Ashley's Garden is adorned with a graceful weeping willow, a fountain, and an abundance of lively, brilliant flowers. For all who see it, the message is clear. Life goes on. Joy follows sorrow. Light rises from darkness. Through 5 years of journals, and endless prayers, Kathleen's dream to see her daughter's legacy shared within the pages of the book, Ashley's Garden, have finally come to pass, and her prayer for a healing ministry has reached far beyond her dreams. When Kathleen awoke on the morning of September 11th, along with the rest of the world, she froze in disbelief. America had, once again, been struck by the evil of terrorism. In that moment, she knew, her words of hope, and healing, would reach far beyond the borders of Oklahoma. They would now take her to New York City. So, along with survivors, and victim's families, she boarded a plane and flew towards her destiny. It was there she saw the ultimate fulfillment of prayer, as she escorted grieving individuals, one by one, to ground zero, beginning the long, but vital, process of healing. By meeting their fellow Oklahomans, the people of New York were able to see first hand, that time, and faith, heals all wounds. No one knows what the future holds, but for now, Kathleen's on a mission, reaching out to the hurting, the wounded, and to all who grieve, with an inspiring message of hope, born of prayer. And back in Oklahoma, Ashley's garden still blooms. .·:*´¨`*:·..·:*´¨`*:·. *: * Richiele * * *·. .·* `*·-:¦:-*´ ³´`*:»§«:*´`³
The Unity of Stranger By Lynn Barker Tonight a friend called. He was going by himself to a nearby park in Los Angeles with a bunch of candles to think and honor the victims of September 11. He wasn't sure if anyone else would show up. Nothing had been scheduled. I had been looking for some place to go to share my feelings with others. I gathered a few candles, a small American flag and met him. At 7:00 P.M., we were the only people in the park, but a small group of people who appeared to be from a church were on the sidewalk handing out candles and lyrics to patriotic songs. We began to sing. As darkness fell, we set up our candle shrine and more people came. They brought flags and more candles. People began driving by, honking, parking, and joining. More people, more flags. Huge ones, tiny ones, one homemade and colored with crayons by a child when his local store ran out. Another friend showed up with her dog that was wearing a red, white, and blue kerchief. People started lining the streets and waving their flags. Across the street we saw a long line of marchers carrying votive candles. They had been called about the gathering in the park. The crowd swelled, shouting "U.S.A!" and waving their flags. There was an older Armenian lady mourning a loss who added her candle to our shrine. They kept coming: Latino families, Asians, young and old, a man in a wheelchair and a homeless man from the park with a flag stuck atop the shopping cart that held all his belongings. Then, the firefighters came...not to tell us we were a fire hazard, but to park their massive trucks on each side of the corner. We cheered these symbols of American heroism and shook their hands. The ladder truck started raising its tall ladder with a big American flag at the top into the night sky. It swung out over the street as it extended and the flag waved. We cheered as the firefighters climbed to the top of the ladder. Cops drove by, honked and turned on their sirens. The corner was ablaze with candlelight and we kept singing. People I'll never see again sang them with me. More people came. The blare of continuously honking horns filled the air as flag- decorated cars drove by and approved of our demonstration. I spoke to a female firefighter who had just returned from digging for survivors for two days in the rubble of the World Trade Center. She needed to see this kind of support, and we were happy to give it to her. Later, I met a young woman who had been eating at a restaurant across the street. She saw our group, went home to get her flag and returned. It was a huge flag and she could only hold up one end of it, so I took the other end. We stood in front of the people lining the street, waving the flag. We joined others chanting "U.S.A!" and singing "America the Beautiful" and "Grand Old Flag" as more fire trucks passed and briefly put on their sirens. CNN News showed up and started shooting, a news helicopter circled overhead, and the ABC and CBS local vans pulled up. Photographers from many papers took countless pictures. I hope those images are part of a huge patchwork that stretches across America to other cities and all the countries of the free world - to other corners and other strangers standing strong, defiant and steadfast together, heads and flags held high. Despite our many nationalities, religions and political differences, we are united in a sorrow, anger and determination that no ragtag army of madmen can ever defeat. This was a night I'll never forget, part of a time in history when, no matter how diverse, the people of Los Angeles were one...on one corner...where only a few had stood only a short time before. That's what the madmen didn't count on and what will, in time, defeat them. .·:*´¨`*:·..·:*´¨`*:·. *: * Richiele * * *·. .·* `*·-:¦:-*´ ³´`*:»§«:*´`³
Joys of Womanhood Brilliant Woman Author Unknown > > Women over 50 don't have babies because they would put them down and forget where they left them. One of life's mysteries is how a 2 pound box of candy can make a woman gain 5 lbs. My mind not only wanders, it sometime leaves completely. The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes. The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don't know what you're doing, someone else does. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends. Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today. Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness. I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting my pantyhose on fire. Amazing! You hang something in your closet for awhile and it shrinks two sizes! Skinny people irritate me! Especially when they say things like, "You know, sometimes I just forget to eat." Now I've forgotten my address, my mother's maiden name, and my keys. But I've never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat. A friend of mine confused her valium with her birth control pills. She had 14 kids, but she doesn't really care. The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him. I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day. I know what Victoria's Secret is. The secret is that nobody older than 30 can fit into their stuff. Celebrate Womanhood! Please forward this page to all the brilliant women in your life When friends meet, hearts warm...proverb

>From the Washington Post Style Invitation, in which it was postulated that English should have male and female nouns, and readers were asked to assign a gender to a noun of their choice and explain their reason. The best submissions: SWISS ARMY KNIFE -- male, because even though it appears useful for a wide variety of work, it spends most of its time just opening bottles. KIDNEYS -- female, because they always go to the bathroom in pairs. TIRE -- male, because it goes bald and often is over inflated. HOT AIR BALLOON: male, because to get it to go anywhere you have to light a fire under it... and, of course, there's the hot air part. SPONGES -- female, because they are soft and squeezable and retain water. WEB PAGE -- female, because it is always getting hit on. SHOE -- male, because it is usually unpolished, with its tongue hanging out. COPIER -- female, because once turned off, it takes a while to warm up. Because it is an effective reproductive device when the right buttons are pushed. Because it can wreak havoc when the wrong buttons are pushed. ZIPLOC BAGS -- male, because they hold everything in, but you can always see right through them. SUBWAY -- male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up. HOURGLASS -- female, because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom. HAMMER -- male, because it hasn't evolved much over the last 5,000 years, but it's handy to have around. REMOTE CONTROL -- female...Ha! You thought I'd say male. But consider, it gives man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.

Eve then Adam After three weeks in the Garden of Eden, God came to visit Eve. "So, how iseverything going?" inquired God. "It is all so beautiful, God," she replied, "the sunrises and sunsets arebreathtaking, the smells, the sights, everything is wonderful, but I havejust this one problem. It is these three breasts that you have given me. Themiddle one pushes the other two out, and I am constantly knocking them withmy arms, catching them on branches, snagging them on bushes, they are a realpain," reported Eve. And Eve went on to tell God that since many other parts of her body came inpairs, such as her limbs, eyes, ears, etc., that she felt that having onlytwo breasts might leave her body more "symmetrically balanced", as she put it. "That is a fair point," replied God, "but it was my first shot at this, youknow. I gave the animals six breasts, so I figured that! you needed onlyhalf of those, but I see that you are right. I will fix it up right away."And God reached down, removed the middle breast and tossed it into thebushes. Three weeks passed, and God once again visits Eve in the garden. "Well, Eve,how is my favorite creation?" "Just fantastic," she replied, "but for oneoversight on your part. You see, all the animals are paired off. The ewe hasa ram and the cow has her bull, all the animals have a mate except me. Ifeel so alone." God thought for a moment and said, "You know, Eve, you are right, how couldI have overlooked this? You do need a mate and I will immediately create aman from a part of you. Now let's see...where did I put that useless boob?" Makes more sense than that business about the rib. »§««:*´`³¤³´`*:»§«<*}}><FI§HY><))*>«:*´`³¤³´`*:»§« Think positive. This should help all of us in our travels! Almost 150 years ago, President Lincoln found it necessary to hire a private investigator - Alan Pinkerton - for protection. And that was the beginning of the Secret Service. Since that time, federal police authority has grown to a large number of multi-letter agencies - FBI, CIA, INS, IRS, DEA, BATF, etc. Now we have the "Federal Air Transportation Airport Security Service." Can't you see them now, these highly trained men and women in their black outfits with their initials in large white letters across their backs: "FATASS". Meanings of Carvings: I don't remember where I found these or maybe you all have already seen them. GRAVESTONE SYMBOLS WE deal so often with abbreviation and scrawled handwriting that we must decipher. We should also understand some of the symbols we encounter when we go graveyard hopping. They may no longer have meaning to us; but to many of our ancestors, the symbols chosen for their graves and vaults were once not simply ornamental in nature. THE early Christians had to develop a system of signs in order to guide one another to secret meeting places for worship. You know, the early church members were called "atheists," and not because they did not worship a God. It was because they ONLY worshipped ONE god, not a plurality of gods, so they were atheists-without gods. ONE of the symbols they chose, a common enough symbol and apparently innocuous, was the anchor, within a Christian context, was really a disguised cross, and carries with it the connotation that Christ is the anchor that prevents the Christian from drifting loose and being lost forever. AN anchor is a more modern (post-medevil times) context may make reference to a person having been a Christian or simply as a sailor. An anchor with a broken chain consistently symbolizes the breaking of the soul from life-death. A perpetual favorite, of course, is the angel. The angel in latter days often symbolizes the image that parents want to hold of a dead child-now an angel, a cherub as depicted in Renaissance art. A crescent is commonly used to show that a person was a follower of the Islamic faith. The use of this symbol is also applied by some, but not all, Black Muslims. THE Christian views the cross as the instrument of death that led to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The cross was the only instrument, not the representation of the Truth who died in the place of sinners. It has been popular through the centuries for some faiths. However, the symbol of the cross may also represent different nationalist divisions, such as a division between the Western Church and the Eastern Church. THE Japanese also used a cross, but for them it represented the four quarters of the earth, although sometimes it meant the four compass directions. Crowns commonly refer either to a heavenly reward awaiting the dead one, or perhaps worldly achievements of the deceased. SOMEWHERE between the Middle Ages and the 17th or 18th century, having a dog on your gravestone or marker or vault came to mean two different things. Placed most commonly at the feet of medieval women, they signified loyalty and inferiority in the chivalric order. More modern applications came to suggest that the one buried there was worthy of love and affection or, at least, loyalty. Again, as another non sequitur, have you wondered why you refer to your feet as dogs, as in "my dogs are really barking," or "my dogs are killing me? In the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, the most handsome, most expensive, and most desirable shower were those made from dogskin-and especially Dalmatian. A small bird that often appears in both Christian and Jewish cemeteries is the dove, symbol most Christians as the Holy Spirit, and to the Jews as a symbol of peace. Europeans used to see the dove also as a symbol of purity and spiritually because of its white coloring. WHILE it is rare to see one, DRAGONS on their gravestones. When they appear, Saint George rides out to kill them. This symbolizes triumph over sin. And when one triumphs over Sin, one has won relief from the most stinging qualities of Death: the punishments for our sins. THE BLEEDING HEART, a rather graphic image somewhat unique to Roman Catholicism, is a depiction of a tomb and blood-dripping cardiac muscle, wrested from the bosom of the Christ, and commonly surrounded by a crown of thorns. The heart of Christ represents Jesus' suffering for the sins of mankind, and marks that grave as that of a Catholic. THE hourglass, a symbol for time from ancient days. Hourglasses are commonly depicted with the lower portion full of sand, and the top empty-the glass has run out of time. Frequently, hourglasses will be shown with wings, as in flight. A glass in flight may refer to wither the fleeting nature of life ("Tempest fugit"), or it may be somewhat oblique reference to the resurrection. I prefer the earthly reference as more likely. Perhaps one day when science believes it can raise the dead and bring them to life again, we will start using digital watches as symbols on our gravestones- a new battery-a new life. WHEN you see a KEY on a marker, look for Greek letters. If no Greek letters appear, the buried one was NOT Phi Beta Kappa. Instead, the key or keys may represent the keys to the Kingdom of God (and that is how you should interpret it if you see a key or keys in the hand of an angel or a person on a marker), or it may indicate spiritual revelation or knowledge. More often than not, a LAMB will mark the grave of a child. Lambs have historically stood for innocence, and for being a member of the flock of the Good Shepherd. When you see a LAMP-usually one that looks as you might think Aladdin's lamp looked-the object of that symbol is to let you know that either here was one with knowledge, or who attained the immortality through the Holy Spirit. SCYTHES and SICKLES represent the wheat that will be separated from the chaff, the fields that are white unto harvest, and the way in which death levels all of us. It reminds us all that the harvest-whether the harvest is that death taking life, or the harvest of Christ taking his people to be separated from the lost-is imminent. And it tells us that death comes swiftly and efficiently. IS it a RISING SUN or a SETTING SUN? Is this a case of "po-ta-to" or "potah-to"? Well, a setting sun is the passing from life to death, and a rising sun is the New Birth of Christianity, or the new day dawning in hope of heaven or reincarnation. Trouble is, how do you know which one is depicted on the stone? For many, the use of a sun is an application of the Scripture which tells the Christian that the "Su(o)n of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings" AN empty or a sraped URN may make reference to the departure of the soul and spirit from the body. (Note that theologically, humans have both a spirit and a soul...Animals have only one of the two.) Since URNS have historically held the ashes of the dead, it seems likely that URNS and the Shrouds that often accompany then in gravestone are reflect rather the fact and perhaps the finality of death. Shoot, I forgot! Bad Turk! Contact the school she will be attending. Explain the situation and the school will help. There are free community programs. Get her a big sister or mentor. Read to her. Real, live people are far better than a web site. I'm sending you one site that does help. Most want $$$. The school should have free tutors. Where do you live, Patti? http://www.indepthinfo.com/read/ Janis
OUCH! That's so sad, Patti. I just read this. Please let me look some. I would also recommend those educational books that allow the child to learn but are also fun. More on the way. By the way, bless you for caring for this lost little one. Now at least she has a chance. Janis TheRayne@aol.com wrote: > Hello Everyone, > > I have just returned from a LONG trip. I don't know of any web sites but I went to Wal-mart and K-mart and got games for the pc to help my grandchildren with their school work. They have counting, math, reading for every grade starting with pre-school. So far we are up to 5th grade. They aren't that expensive since I am on a fixed income. My daughter will look for web sites and send you what she finds. Ruth Hughes

I am wondering if it isn't kind of dangerous for moms to be posting their childrens' e-mail addresses, and even more dangerous posting the city they are from. A few days ago I received a very scary e-mail about a lady who was stalked by a man who was attracted to her because of her "online name". They began chatting, and after a while he was stalking her. If I saved the e-mail, I could forward it to you, but either way, just something for us moms to think about. Thank you.
