BLM shows JOHN FLYNN purchasing acreage in Oak Creek in December, 1840. It is believe he arrived in the area between 1838-1839. He is found in the 1840 census of what was then Lake, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Territory. There were five member in his family. 1850 Oak Creek census shows: JOHN FLYNN, 75, Farmer, b. Ireland John Flynn, Jr., 29, Farmer, b. Ireland Sarah Flynn, 19, b. Ireland Bridget Flynn, 2, b. WI (daug of John Jr. & Sarah)?? Theodore Flynn, 7, b. 1843, WI (son of John Sr.)?? William Flynn, 11, b. 1839, NY (son of John Sr.)?? ---- John Sr., also had a daughter MARY FLYNN, b. 1810-1812, Ireland. She married JAMES O'HERRIN, who was also born in Ireland. They too purchased land in Oak Creek, adjacent to the Flynn's, in Dec. 1840. They are shown to be in Oak Creek in 1838. The O'Herrin's did live in Illinois for a short period, prior to arriving in Oak Creek (Their son Thomas was born in IL in 1837). --- the 1860 census for Oak Creek finds: John Flynn, 81, Farmer, b. Ireland Sara Flynn, 26, Farmeress, b. Ireland Bridget Flynn, 11, b. Wisconsin John Flynn, 9, b. Wisconsin Thomas Flynn, 6, b. Wisconsin --- I cannot find any of the FLYNN's in the 1870 census of Oak Creek, or anywhere else. However, the 1869 and 1876 plats for Oak Creek show that they still owned the land. --- 1880 Census for Oak Creek finds: Sarah Flynn, 46, Farmeress, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland John Flynn, 27, Farmer, b. Wisconsin Thomas Flynn, 25, Catholic Priest, b. Wisconsin Patrick Flynn, 70, brother-in-law, Farm Labor, b. Ireland NOTE: The 1860 census shows Patrick Flynn was living with James & Mary Flynn-O'Herrin family, as Farm Labor. --- The Oak Creek plats show Flynn's owning the land, or a portion of it, thru 1961, although I'm assuming they owned the land but did not live on it as I have been unable to find them in any of the other census'. --- One last bit of information: JOHN FLYNN and JAMES O'HERRIN each donated 3 acres of their land to the Catholic church for the building of St. Matthew's Catholic Church & Cemetery. This was done in March of 1843, per BLM records. If anyone has any information on these families, I could love to hear from you.
