    3. Shannon, The Flynn, O'Flynn and other variations of the surname are very common in Ireland and you'll find them in just about every county. While family information about ancestors can contain important clues, your best way to try to find your O'Flynns in Ireland is through Canadian church and civil records. Family recollections may send you to the wrong place in Ireland in your search. There are generally no surviving census records for Ireland for the 1800s. Civil registration didn't start until 1864 (Protestant marriages in 1845). The first complete census is 1901 and 1911 has been issued early. Available Church registers would be your primary source for your ancestral information in Ireland. So you should start with the available Canadian census records and then try to obtain information in civil and church records as well as Peter O'Flynn's naval information. Tombstone inscriptions, obituaries, cemetery records, wills and even church histories are other important sources. You'll need not only the county where they originated in Ireland but also the townland or civil parish. These are Administrative Divisions generally used in the 1800s as geographic locations. An explanation is available at http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/2435.asp A list of all the townlands in Ireland for each county is available at http://www.seanruad.com Just select the county you're interested in and you can access the list for that county. This numerous and widespread name originated in a number of different places, including Kerry and Clare. Of the two in Co. Cork one was a branch of the Corca Laoidhe, the other, lords of Muskerylinn (Muiscre Uí Fhloinn); in north Connacht the O'Flynns were leading men under the royal O'Connors, and there was also an erenagh family there; while further west on the shores of Lough Conn another distinct erenagh family was located. 3. I am looking for info on a Thomas Flynn. He was born, I assume in Co. Cork, Ireland in the 1800's. He immigrated to the USA and settled in Wisconsin. I know that he was in the Irish Regiment, Company K, 6th Wisconsin Volunteers during the Civil War. I am looking for who is wife was and their children. Thomas "Tommy" Flynn was the brother of my greatx3 grandmother, Catherine (nee Flynn) Sullivan. She was born in 1817 in Kilmocomoge Parish, Bantry Bay, Co. Cork Ireland. She immigrated with her husband and family in the mid 1840's and they also settled in Wisconsin. The Sullivan's lived in Vernon and Grant Co's Wisconsin. I am also looking for the names of Tommy and Catherine's parents as well as any other siblings. I found a land deed for a Thomas Flynn for land in Buffalo Co. Wisconsin but do not know if this is the correct Thomas Flynn. Any help would be appreciated. Stacey __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Somewhere in the early 1900's, and then was in the Navy; yet the O'Flynn relatives of mine are untraceable for me so far as I was very close with my ggrandparents Peter and Mary (Matthews, maiden name) O'Flynn; yet the rest of the O'Flynn's lived elsewhere. I'm sure he had siblings in Vancouver possibly. From there I'd like to also pinpoint the counties in Ireland where my relatives live. I should probably look into Matthews as well, yet I think Scotland is the main area of my ggrandmothers heritage. The Carr's are also related to me as are the White's. 3. >Are any of the Flynn's originally O'Flynn's at one time? From MacLysaght's, The Surnames of Ireland: FLINN, A frequent variant of FLYNN (O) FLYNN, FLYNG, Ó Floinn (flann, ruddy). For the name in Ulster as an indigenous sept see LYNN.
