Shepherd arrival passenger record. It had a Mary, Michael and daughter Judy Flynn, listed in the passenger manifest. I have a Few concerns about them being the right ones. 1. It was reported that Michael & Mary Flynn had a girl child in 1848 named Ann. This child named Ann was not on the manifest with Michael and Mary. This I was told came from the birth records at the parish in Rathvilly, Ireland. The child named Ann was supposed to have died during the crossing of the Atlantic. Judy according to the Manifest was born during the voyage. Judy was on the arrival manifest at New York. No other record has been found about this girl named Judy for the Michael & Mary Flynn in question. 2. The Arrival date Jan 29, 1849 at New York is doubtful. There was a note was sewn into the Himmel of Mary Flynn Here is the text of that note: "I have known MichL Flynn and his wife Mary from their Childhood. I believe them to be quiet, honest, sober and well conducted. They emigrate in hopes of bettering their condition. (Signed) John Gahan P.P. (Parish Priest) Rathvilly, YofL (Year of Lord) Feb. 7 1849" Father John Gahan was pastor at St. Patrick's in Rathvilly in 1849 according to a plaque on the entry way wall to the church. If the parish priest gave this note to Michael and Mary Flynn, their departure could not have been until after Feb. 7, 1849. 3. They was known at the Parish in Rathvilly. The ships record for the J.H. Shepherd, stated their residence was Galway, not Rathvilly. Galway is on the western side of the Ireland and Rathvilly is closer to Dublin on the east side of Ireland. I doubt that they would travel from Rathvilly to Galway, then to Liverpool. It would be easier to go to Dublin then Liverpool, from Rathvilly. I still have not found the right Michael, Mary and Ann Flynn, have searched most of the manifests available for 1849 and have not found them. There was one ship with a Ann, Michael and Mary Flynn, later that year. The problem with them is that that Michael died during the voyage Also the three names was listed in different Flynn families on that manifest.

Perhaps we have the same line. I'm descended from Michael Flynn (stonemason) born 1821 in County Wicklow and Mary Leary born County Carlo. They came to the US in 1849, probablyt on the James H. Shepherd out of Liverpool, arriving New York on Jan 29, 1849. Their children, not in order, were: Catherine born July 9, 1853 in New York, who married Jules Hermas Vilmont. (This is my line.) Pat J. Flynn, who had a son Joseph and a daughter Alfonzo. Samuel Flynn who had one son. James & Thomas Flynn, who lived in Montour IA in Tama County. James worked as an Indian agent, spoke several languages, and married a girl from the tribe. He had 2 sons and 2 daughters. John (oldest) lived at Pilot, NE. Michael lost his wife & child in childbirth and never remarried. Mary Flynn married a Reed, lived in Chicago & moved to CA after her husband died. I do have more information on some of the lines. Patrick Flynn is a very common name. My grandfather was one of them and his father was John Flynn and that is at least as common. Good Luck in locating Flynn's in Ireland but you might try the Leitrim/Roscommon web page, it is great but you have to have some more information. What time period are you looking at? What area in US, what more do you know? Reedsburg is in Sauk County, which is right next door to Portage Wisconsin. There were a bunch of Hickey's who moved in there from, possibly from Ballycorp, county Mayo. Since I've been chasing down Patrick Hickey, I haven't come across any other names as of yet. I'm hoping to get a census CD for that era. It maybe a slim chance, but something to look into..
