    3. I can't be 100% certain, Rose, but I would interpret the words Ft. St. Marks a little differently than it sounds in your question. St. Marks is a place ancient in Florida History. It is about due south of Tallahassee on the coast in Wakulla County, where the St. Marks River flows into the Gulf of Mexico. I believe that it was a place that the Navarro expedition landed... and it was a place the Spanish maintained a fort at from very early days. It was the place Andrew Jackson occupied about 1818 and hung the two British traders who had been trading arms to the Indians that had raided into Georgia and points north, when he took Florida from the Spanish. And it is the only place on the Florida coast that I am aware of that the Confederate military continuously maintained a fortification during the entire Civil War... though it could easily be bypassed and was, with the resulting Battle of Natural Bridge in March 1865. The name of the fort that the Spanish built at St. Marks was San Marcos de Apalachee. The Confederates called their earthwork fort there Fort Ward. The old Spanish fort at St. Marks is most likely the place your ancestor was enrolled. Fort Ward was not built or named till a year or two later... For a collection of links about St. Marks, see the web page about my ancestor John Shepard Haven at: http://pone.com/ts/rw0x.htm Richard White Tallahassee TOMNROSEJ@aol.com wrote: > > During the Civil War my Great Uncle James M.
